Chapter 193: Warning (3)
"There isn’t a need to get too much of the relatives involved," Luke said, worried about them all approaching him at once.
He had allowed Scarlet to take Alana to avoid dealing with the Callahans, but it still managed to be this way.
"I was already planning to apologise to Scarlet and hoped she would also apologise. We both said or did some things that weren’t right. I am also ready for Alana to return to where she belongs. A princess belongs in a palace, Ryan. You need to bring her back," said Luke.
"I am not going to force the princess to come back here, especially with how you treat her-"
"Ryan," Luke interjected since Ryan was getting ahead of himself. "I do not get involved in what happens with your family. Do not get involved with what I do with my family. Alana is to marry and the longer she is with Scarlet the longer it will take."
"If I were the princess, I would not return. It is expected that you would try to marry her off to some old fool because you are angry with her mother. It was your father who decided to remarry after your mother passed. It is quite childish of you to hate Alana when she came into this world by the actions of two people," said Ryan.
Ryan understood being loyal to your mother and since there was a request for there not to be another queen, the king should have followed through with it after he promised his first wife, but it didn’t and it wasn’t Alana’s fault.
Luke didn’t care for Ryan’s advice. What did Ryan know about his family? "My only siblings are the ones that came from my mother. Someone made a good offer for Alana’s hand and given the fact he has all she needs to continue to live a good life as a princess, I think they are well suited for each other."
"The one problem would be his age,’ Ryan took a guess. He knew he had guessed right from Luke’s smile. "You’re a bastard, you know that? You should be careful as karma doesn’t always target you. It goes where it might hit you harder and maybe one day your daughters would have to marry an old geezer."
Luke wasn’t worried about such a thing as he planned for his children to marry worthy suitors. "I am the king. No harm would come to my children. Are we here to speak about Alana or Scarlet? I thought you were here to keep the truce strong. You and I won’t have any problems if you stay out of my troubles with those women."
"And I can’t so we unfortunately can’t get along. You already know that I think very little of you as a king and each time I come to visit this palace, you don’t do anything to prove that you were the right choice for king. Your little brother might be more suited for a king," Ryan said, considering showing his support to the spare.
"You must be careful before someone thinks you are planning to kill me to put my brother on the throne. I used to think you were a smart man but you might be a little too emotional, Ryan. Letting women get in the way of your duty but given the history of your family, it is fitting," Luke joked.
Luke found it ridiculous that a great knight was once swayed by a wild woman.
Ryan didn’t take too kindly to Luke speaking about his great-grandparents. If Luke wasn’t careful, Ryan just might push for the younger prince to try taking over the palace. This kingdom was in desperate need of a good king once more.
"Before I stain my sword with your blood, let us speak about what you called me here for," Ryan said, resisting the urge to pick up the sword beside him.
"Right!" Luke clapped his hands. "About that land you have, I need you to make way for some of my guards to go there."
"No," Ryan replied. "What part of your guards will not settle down there do you not understand? I am hardly in the mood to deal with such a request right now. Do not push me to kill you."
"It is not for the reason you think. You know what, I don’t think we’ll be able to talk properly until the matter with Scarlet is taken care of so I am inviting you to bring Scarlet and Alana to the palace-"
"For you to take Alana and marry her off to some old fool? We’re not stupid. You want her back in the palace to stop her from leaving again. You look desperate so I wonder what you owe to the man you are trying to marry her off to. If it is so important that she weds, I can find her a husband," Ryan proposed.
In secret, he would let Alana select her husband. freeweɓnovel.cѳm
"I am the king and her brother so I must pick her husband, but it was a kind offer from you. It might look like I am being cruel but I am doing what is best for her. I could have been evil and sent her off to some foreign land," said Luke.
The thought had crossed his mind to send Alana where he never had to see her again. He was being kind by choosing a man who had wealth. His satisfaction came from the man being far older than her.
Since the women from Alana’s side of the family like to marry men who were once married, Luke was setting her up with a man who had been married twice before and already had children. Alana would see how the children felt to have a new mother they did not want.
"You are hopeless," Ryan shook his head.
A grown man would not hang onto the past and be upset with his sister over something that was not her doing.
"She has suffered enough. I saw the way you treated her in our youth which is why I could never bring myself to like you. Stop misplacing your anger toward her all because you could never speak up to your father. It is he who decided to remarry and have another child. Alana was innocent in all this," said Ryan.
"Should you continue to trouble her or Scarlet, I will be coming right for you with my sword ready to kill you. It’s the beauty of a kingdom having a few spares. You can get rid of an imbecile. Our talk for the day is over. Don’t call upon me unless you have something smart to say," Ryan said, taking up his sword.
Luke couldn’t stomach once more that they were taking him for a fool. Treating him as though he wasn’t the king. "I won’t forget this."
"I truly hope you don’t."
