Chapter 157: Late call (2)
Ian remained awake while Scarlet had fallen asleep. She had given in to the fact she needed to sleep and he tried to remain still to not wake her yet. She had to eat, but she could enjoy resting a little more as dinner had started a few minutes ago and it should still be warm by the time he woke her.
Ian left her to rest on his arm which she had chosen to be more comfortable than all the pillows she had on her bed. He couldn’t help but wonder how she would react to the way she had fallen asleep. Would she be embarrassed or just ignore it?
Ian was enjoying the quietness of the room, but once more, the phone in her room rang. It was the third time that it rang and he was worried that it would awaken Scarlet.
It was either family, work, or someone who didn’t know it was time for dinner and wanted to bother her. Ian wanted to get up to cut the cord for the phone so it would stop ringing but he was too comfortable to move.
He watched Scarlet, hoping the noise wouldn’t cause her to wake up yet. He relaxed when the phone stopped ringing, hoping whoever it was would stop. If it was an emergency, they needed to send someone or hoped someone else on the estate would answer a phone elsewhere.
Ian pulled Scarlet closer to him, but before he could go back to enjoying their closeness, the phone rang again. There would not be any peace until someone answered the phone. To be positive, Ian assumed it to be one of her relatives who desperately needed to reach Scarlet right now.
Ian carefully slipped away from Scarlet, placing a pillow in his stead so she wouldn’t notice his absence. He got up from the bed and went to the noisy phone, answering it just before it stopped. "Hello."
"You? Why are you there?" Jack questioned, surprised by a man’s voice.
Jack stood up from his chair. He sat in the office of his mansion, not believing what he was hearing. He looked at the large clock in the room to check the time. It was still early enough for Ian to be there for dinner but what gave him the right to take it upon himself to answer Scarlet’s phone?
Jack expected to hear from Florence if Scarlet did not answer but he was not expecting to hear a man’s voice. The same man he wanted to warn Scarlet about.
"It is late, don’t you think? To be bothering her at this time, do you not have something better to do?" Ian asked, tempted to put down the phone but he knew that Jack was going to lose his mind and keep calling. freёwebnovel.com
Ian should have known that one of the people who would bother Scarlet at this time was Jack. Jack was so caught up in Scarlet recently that he thought he had a chance to get back with her. Ian wondered how long this was going on for Jack to call Scarlet at this hour.
This might be the first time as Ian could see Scarlet having the phone moved from her bedroom so she would not be bothered.
Jack didn’t care for what Ian had to say. He was more concerned about which room Ian was in to use the phone. "Where are you now?"
Ian shook his head at the fool. "You called her estate, idiot. You know where I am. Hurry up and say what it is that has you bothering her at night when we are all meant to be eating."
"Get out of that estate and far away from my wife-"
"Ex-wife," Ian corrected Jack. He watched Scarlet from where he stood to know when she woke up. He wouldn’t put it past her to pretend to be asleep just so she could listen to everything he would say to Jack.
"That will change soon. I am making you another offer. How much do you need to get away from her?" Jack asked.
Ian laughed at Jack’s attempt to buy him. "You cannot afford to buy me and I don’t have any plans of leaving the lovely woman asleep on the bed."
"You!" Jack yelled, seeing red from what Ian was trying to say. He knew now that Ian was with Scarlet in her bedroom and the reason Ian had answered was because of Scarlet being fast asleep.
How could Scarlet be so comfortable with this man to let him be in her bedroom as she rested? Ian should not have been there even when she was awake. Scarlet was moving too fast for Jack’s liking. It would be hard to ignore this when they got back together.
Scarlet refused to sleep with him during the last months of their marriage yet she would welcome this lowlife to her room?
Jack had to take a seat as he couldn’t believe what he was discovering. This had to be a lie from Ian to get under his skin because Scarlet wouldn’t do this.
"Since you have nothing important to say, please refrain from bothering her since it is late. I shall let her know of your call and it would be up to her if she wishes to respond. Before I go, I must thank you," Ian said since without Jack screwing up, it wouldn’t be possible for him to be here right now. "I shall take care of the woman you let get away."
"I am coming back for my wife. Do not laugh," Jack said, angered by Ian’s laughter as if the matter wasn’t serious. He was going to get his wife back now that he had sent Beth away. He’d apologise as many times as he needed to and Scarlet would do the same since she had caused a few problems.
It made more sense in Jack’s eyes for Scarlet to be with him and Ian could go for Beth since Ian liked to go after his women. freewēbnoveℓ.com
"Scarlet-"
Ian put down the phone as he wasn’t interested in what more Jack had to say. Scarlet needed to have her guard up more than ever since Jack sounded convinced that they were still married and he was going to get back here.
Ian smiled as he didn’t put the phone back for it to be unable to ring again. Jack was just going to be talking with himself for the rest of the night, sulking over the fact Scarlet was with another man.
Ian joined Scarlet back in bed where he belonged, hugging her once more and enjoying it more than ever because he knew that Jack was somewhere losing his mind.
