Chapter 156: Late call (1)
Alana stretched her arms after she left the library. She had taken Scarlet’s words seriously that she needed to study first before she could be given a job. "How long was I in there?" Alana wondered.
She couldn’t think of the last day she had spent many hours with her face stuck in more than one book.
"A little over three hours."
Alana was startled by Dawson’s voice. She turned around to find him leaning on a wall. "Have you turned to stalking?"
"That is beneath me. I was instructed to watch over you since I know your predicament. Now that you are done and ready for dinner, I can take my leave," Dawson replied.
Alana didn’t know that he was out here or she would have left sooner so that he could have a break. "I didn’t know about you guarding me. It wasn’t my intention to make you stand out here. I would have brought a chair." ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
"How kind of you, princess. Standing for that time was nothing," said Dawson.
"Don’t lie. You must be tired after waiting for me. I will tell Scarlet that you do not need to watch me. No one needs to since all I am doing is reading. How can I hurt myself doing that? Well," Alana added as there was a large book she could not get picked up. "Some books are heavy."
"Why didn’t you leave to find someone who could help you?" Dawson questioned, not understanding why she wasn’t making use of the help around her.
"I need to take care of myself-"
"You’re a princess," Dawson interjected.
Alana didn’t like his answer. "I know that I am a princess, but I still want to take care of myself."
"You’re a princess-"
"Would you please stop saying that? I have not forgotten who I am. Isn’t Scarlet around for you to guard her?" Alana asked as he was starting to annoy her.
"You’re a princess so why do you want to act like a normal person? Why are you so hellbent on working to take care of yourself when the palace is to care for you? The king wants you out and you’re giving in by planning to live a simple life. Be a princess. It is your birthright," Dawson said.
It wasn’t his business but he would rather see that she tried to do more as a princess instead of leaving that life to be like everyone else.
"Well I," Alana said as she didn’t know what to say.
"Isn’t there something you can do to take a stand against the king and be the princess that you are? If you don’t want to be married, then voice your opinion," Dawson suggested.
"It is not so simple. Luke has the power and the right to get me to marry a man of his choice. He already has one that I am quite unfamiliar with and knowing how much my brother despises me, I know it is not a man I can see myself falling in love with. It truly isn’t simple," Alana said, saddened just thinking about the palace.
"I am nothing like Scarlet to be willing to put up a fight. Luke has hated me since we were children and I’ve had to protect myself for a long time. I don’t have the energy to keep fighting. I will never forget that I am a princess but I’ve grown tired of the palace. I like it here," Alana confessed.
She was still alone at times because Scarlet had work to do, but the days she had been here were more pleasant than what she had in the palace.
"I don’t know when I will marry to have someone to protect me so while Scarlet is offering me work, I want to take the chance to take care of myself. I know that I will have to listen to many questions about why a princess wants to work but I am prepared for it."
Alana continued. "I understand what you were trying to say and I thank you for wanting to push me to fight against the king, but that is a battle that I would lose over and over again. Luke has all his followers and my siblings are on his side."
"Would you like me to shoot him?" Dawson offered.
Alana coughed, taken aback by his offer. "You cannot do that. They would chase you down and kill you. I don’t like Luke but I wouldn’t have anyone kill him for me."
"I’ve escaped worse things. He’s been bothering you and Scarlet. It is my job to get rid of nuisances around my boss. Now, when will you share with Scarlet that you’ve read a letter from your brother?" Dawson asked, knowing she was going to keep it a secret forever.
"How did you," Alana licked her lips. "You truly are a stalker. Scarlet doesn’t need to know about the letter. She is enjoying her time with Ian and then she already has a lot of work to do. That letter is only my concern."
"If the king is threatening you while you are in Scarlet’s care, it is not only your concern. I hope you continue to be smart and don’t do anything behind Scarlet’s back to make her regret taking you from the palace. Don’t take any orders from your brother," Dawson advised Alana.
From what he knew about the Castros and Collins, any threat Luke might tell Alana that he would do to Scarlet wouldn’t last.
"I will not do something stupid. Thank you for all your advice but I am tired and would like to go see Scarlet to let her know what I have done. You can go find a chair to rest your feet and your mouth. Excuse me," Alana said, turning around to continue on her way. freewebnovёl.ƈom
Dawson smiled, following the little feisty princess who didn’t have a single clue. "I wouldn’t go to Scarlet right now. Not unless you are prepared for what you might see."
"What on earth are you on about now? I can hear it in your voice that you are enjoying what you say so be out with it. Why can’t I go to Scarlet now?" Alana asked, wanting to know what she missed.
"I don’t know if I should be the one to say it since I don’t know what the palace has already told you-"
"As your princess, I order you to tell me right now," Alana said, playing into what he said to her earlier. He wanted a princess well now he had it.
"Of course. Scarlet is inside her room with Ian and is yet to come out. I would not disturb them," Dawson revealed.
"What?" Alana replied, not believing it to be true. "Why didn’t anyone come to tell me sooner? We should have her food sent to her room or better yet, leave it until they exit. This is good news."
