Chapter 145: Get out (1)
Beth bit at her nails, nervous because of the silence from Chester. As far as she knew, Dorothy was still alive and well when she should not be. If Chester had betrayed her, then she could kiss her good life goodbye since the wedding had not come yet.
The Humphrey family doctor could come any day now and expose her secret. Dorothy had to die soon.
"Should we just speed up the wedding? It would not be my dream wedding but it is better than nothing," Beth considered.
She would have to face her friends making light of the fact the wedding wasn’t as grand as she made it out to be, but having one was better than just staying as Jack’s woman.
Beth watched from a window as Jack’s carriage finally returned. They had left on a bad note and after some thought, Beth knew she had to make it right. Her lie was easy to go on for so long because she had Jack in her hands. Once he started to be annoyed by her, then she was out of there.
"Why does this fool keep thinking about a woman no longer in his life? Why did you need to wait until it was my turn to marry to do this? I will not let you ruin this," Beth said, watching Jack’s every move down below.
Just as his love for her had decreased, Beth felt the same way. There was a lot she could say about him of why he wasn’t much of a man. His money was the only good thing about him.
Beth didn’t like this act of a saint Jack was putting on, wanting to watch over Scarlet. Did he not see how ridiculous it was to want to protect the woman you hurt?
Beth smiled, putting on her act once more. She only had to put up with this a little longer and then she could be herself. The idea of killing Jack seemed far better now since he was acting too much of a fool in love with another woman.
Beth went down to the front door where Jack had a maid taking off his coat. Her smile fell for a moment because of the way Jack smiled at the maid. He rarely showed any interest in them. ’Has he been drinking?’ She wondered.
"Jack!" She called to let them know of her presence.
Beth made her way to Jack and stood in the middle of him and the maid. She didn’t know if it was something harmless that she was simply making something bigger of, but Beth couldn’t take the chance.
’Why is there such a young maid here?’ Beth thought. Older maids were more suited so they wouldn’t get distracted and neither would Jack.
Beth would like to think his wandering eyes were a thing no more now that he was with her but she could not trust it. That was how she got Jack and now, she was starting to worry about another woman approaching her to tell her about an affair.
’He wouldn’t,’ Beth assured herself.
Beth hugged Jack, wanting their earlier disagreement to end here.
"What are you doing, Beth? Keeping me by the door when I want a drink. Is there something you need to tell me? Have you spent more than you were meant to?" Jack asked, hoping that was not the case.
He wasn’t used to someone he courted spending this much of his money. When was it going to stop? What did Beth need every day that she was going shopping and wasting all the money he gave her?
Beth stepped away from Jack and looked at the maid still present. "Don’t you know that you are dismissed? Did I have to say it?"
Jack pinched the bridge of his nose as he had just come home and already Beth was giving him a headache. "She was waiting to see what else I needed. What has gotten into you?"
A dry laugh escaped Beth’s lips. "What has gotten into me? Funny that you ask me that. You are the one acting odd. Digging around in the life of your ex-wife and showing interest in your servants all of a sudden. I am not the one who needs to be asked that question."
"You said you were fine with me protecting Scarlet-" frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
"Not to this degree! You are acting obsessed with her as if you want her back. Have you not forgotten why you welcomed me into your life in the first place? Scarlet was not a good wife," Beth reminded Jack. She remembered well what he told her.
While Jack might be a bastard for cheating it wasn’t like Scarlet made for the greatest wife. Why did he want to go back to that when he had someone so much better?"
"Ha. Has my lack of status started to bother you, Jack? Do you miss when you had her wealth near? When she was the one taking care of you-"
Jack grabbed Beth’s arms roughly, ignoring the cry that came from her lips. "Scarlet never took care of me. I led that house just as I am doing this one. Do not speak of that again."
"I see. In your relationship with her, you were like me. The one who had to depend on the other. Even someone with your wealth has to play that role at least once. It is funny," Beth laughed, suddenly amused.
Jack gritted his teeth. He hated to hear that Scarlet was the one who led their relationship all because she had more money and status than him. Every chance someone got, they made comments about how he must be grateful that he had Scarlet to care for him. Joke or not, it wounded him.
The men were to lead while the women were to follow without any question. How was he to do that when Scarlet did not need him for whatever she wanted? It was one of her few flaws and one of Beth’s greatest strengths from the beginning.
Jack shoved Beth, needing her far away from him. She gave him nothing but headaches these days. He would gladly take Scarlet back and run their home together. It was a mistake to give in to Beth’s seduction. Had she not shown up before him then he wouldn’t have been swayed and lost his wife.
"Get out," Jack said softly. It was so soft that Beth did not hear it. "I said to get out," he raised his voice. "Gather the things you came with and leave."
"You will send the mother of your child out of the home meant for us to settle in? It is fine for you to be upset but to kick me out when I am carrying your child is not. Jack, you must come to your senses," Beth said since he wasn’t thinking right now. He couldn’t be. "I am carrying your child." freeweɓnøvel.com
"How can I be certain? We fooled around with each other but I don’t know how many other men you were looking to get your hands on then. We’ve made a mistake,’ Jack admitted. "I need you out of my home by night."
