Chapter 140: Not your place (2)

"I am only trying to protect her. I do not trust him," Nolan said, taking a step back to put some space between him and Leonard.

Leonard didn’t like how Nolan was acting. Nolan was a good lawyer but it seemed he forgot all the sense he had with his work and was acting purely on jealousy. Leonard needed it to be studied how even the smartest person could act like a fool when it came to feelings. All sense and reasoning went out the window.

Nolan was acting like he was Scarlet’s father. The person who had to do all the extra protecting. It also felt like Nolan was kind of scolding him for not being more involved in Scarlet’s current relationship.

"You were never going to like whoever she got close to after the divorce. Jealousy is a powerful annoying little thing. You must have done something with that jealousy to get yourself fired. If you want to be hired again, don’t do this again," Leonard advised Nolan. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

Nolan could not understand why Leonard wasn’t thanking him for thinking of Scarlet. He was the only one who worked for her and was going out of his way to watch over her. "I’m doing this because I care for her."

"Coming here this late with little to no proof of what he’s done during his time out of town is a little odd for me. Normally, I would have accepted that you cared for her and looked into him more, but your behaviour is strange. I’ve had enough of fools being obsessed with my daughter. Do not do anything stupid because you want to be with her," Leonard warned.

While he liked Nolan, it was a bit dangerous if Nolan was acting on jealousy. Leonard was more concerned about why Scarlet fired Nolan when she liked his work.

"Tell me honestly, if not him, would you have been silent if she had let another man into her life?" Leonard questioned.

"I would have brought this up if any other man around her seemed to be dangerous. I understand that being the son of a lord-"

"I could care less if he was the son of the king," Leonard interjected. He didn’t care about titles. Of what Ian could offer Scarlet when it came to money or status. His daughter had all that she needed to never look to anyone to have anything. "She’s Scarlet Collins. I don’t know how little you think of her, but she’s not an ordinary person."

"I know that she is not an ordinary person. I know that quite well, but you must admit it is odd how he came back and went straight to her. Where has his money come from? It isn’t like Scarlet to get so close to anyone so fast. I don’t understand it," Nolan said.

Why was Scarlet allowing this man by her side? To escort her to the ball or to kiss her and not send him away? Why was her family so comfortable with welcoming Ian when they were normally private and didn’t allow too many outsiders to get near?

Of all the times for the Collins to be welcoming, why did it have to be now?

"It is not for you to understand. You were her lawyer. Anything outside of your work is not your concern. It is close to dinner and I do not have the time to waste trying to explain this to you. Leave before I call upon your father," Leonard said, knowing Mr. Hurley wouldn’t be pleased with his son’s visit.

Nolan should be satisfied with knowing that Leonard was looking into Ian. Nothing was alarming for Leonard to warn Scarlet about. After the messy divorce, Leonard trusted that Scarlet was careful about the man she allowed around her.

Leonard had no plans of removing someone who might be making his daughter happy right now. He already gave Ian a warning so there was nothing more to do right now. They only had to wait for something a bit suspicious concerning Ian, but as of right now, he was fine.

Leonard turned around to go inside. "The only good thing about your visit is that I can have more wine. Do not come to me like this unless you have proof of something to be concerned about. Have a safe trip back to your home and do not go anywhere near Scarlet."

"Wait," Nolan called, going up the steps to get Leonard to stop. Unfortunately, the door was closed before his face. "What now?"

Nolan had considered Leonard his only hope to look into what was happening to Scarlet. How was it that he was the only one to see she was behaving differently? The Scarlet he was used to would not have allowed Ian around her so easily.

How was it that Ian had managed to come and get close to Scarlet, but he had been around her for years, knowing many secrets because of his work yet nothing happened between them?

Nolan had always been good to Scarlet and only needed one chance to show that he would treat her well. He could not forget how Ian had teased him when he kissed Scarlet.

"I must find more," Nolan said, turning around to go back to his carriage. He should have known better as a lawyer that evidence mattered. Now he came off as a jealous man to Leonard.

Nolan could stay quietly by her side if there was a man he thought was going to treat her well around. He could not allow for another Jack to come into her life and right now, all signs pointed to Ian wanting to use her.

Hank Kingsley was quite loud with speaking about his future relations with the Collins and then Layla started to speak about Scarlet being more suited for Victor. It was clear as day what was happening yet Scarlet failed to see it.

Nolan entered his carriage, being quick to leave since he was now an unwanted guest on the property and he knew how the Collins treated those guests.

The people he had paid to look into Ian were not finding much on him. The only way he might be able to get the truth of what happened between Ian and the old woman would be to go out of town and question anyone close to her.

Nolan didn’t trust leaving this into the hands of someone else. Once he proved his assumption right, Nolan knew that Scarlet would be grateful and hire him once more. The likes of Ian Kingsley would not be around her long.
