Chapter 18: You’re Going to Die
Riley looked at Liam, leaning by the car’s window, watching the buildings pass by.
The change in his appearance surprised her greatly, making her even more curious about his Factor. freewёbnoνel.com
"So," she started, "white hair?"
Liam looked away from the window and then towards her before nodding, "thanks to my Factor, I can make it any color I want, and I just happen to like white."
"I see," Riley nodded and focused on the road ahead of them....for a while before turning back to him and adding, "is your factor like a chameleon’s ability to change colors?"
"I’m not telling you my factor, Detective Riley," Liam simply responded.
"..."
The woman fell silent, but that didn’t mean she had given up. She hated leaving questions unanswered, and she would do everything she could to find out what his factor was.
Liam, very clearly, knew this.
But did it bother him? Not in the slightest.
After all, it wasn’t as if he didn’t trust her....and even if he didn’t, Riley already knew his identity as both Liam and Zero.
He just didn’t feel like sharing the capabilities of his Factor with someone who worked closely with the HA just yet.
Not until he properly figured out what it was capable of, anyway.
The buildings around them suddenly disappeared, and the two found themselves on an open road, with a sign that they were going the right way.
They soon found themselves in what seemed to be an abandoned city, one filled with broken buildings.
It was a city that had been abandoned after its residents were forced to flee. By the time the HA dealt with whatever had driven them out, most of the displaced citizens had already built new lives elsewhere.
"The Fracture Event," Riley said as she looked at the destroyed buildings surrounding them, "to think they were hiding here all along."
[It’s quite an obvious hideout,] Sable’s voice came through the car’s display screen, [though the HA seemed to have no intention to raid it.]
Riley frowned at his words, but she didn’t argue, especially after finding out that the Argent Ring was part of the Ouroborus.
Though she still hoped that the HA wouldn’t dismiss people in danger just because they were afraid, she wasn’t naive enough to dismiss the fact.
"Stop the car," Liam suddenly said, and without hesitation, Riley stopped.
They seemed to now be in the center of the abandoned city, but there was no obvious sign of any hideout.
"We’ll get off here," Liam said again, opening the door, "see you later, Sable, and don’t worry, I’ll take good care of your girlfriend. "
Without giving either of the two a chance to respond, he exited the car with both hands in his pockets.
Riley followed with a frown on her face, leaving behind a chuckling Sable.
"Why did we stop here?" She asked, looking around, as far as she could see, they were only surrounded by destruction.
Liam moved his gaze away from a large metal with claw marks to her before pointing forward.
A distance away from them was just more destruction, so she waited for him to explain.
"Past that point, their scouts will notice us," he said, "so we’ll have to walk."
Riley simply nodded, pressed a button, and her car’s camouflage was immediately activated, completely hiding the vehicle.
"That’s so cool," Liam couldn’t help but mutter.
Of course, they could just use the camouflaged car to continue ahead, but the problem was the sound.
It might be invisible while camouflaged, but the sound would remain, and they’d undoubtedly be quickly discovered.
"I could get you one," she offered, and Liam’s expression immediately brightened...that is, until he heard her next words, "if you join the HA and properly use your Factor in service of the people."
"..." he looked at her with a blank expression before letting out a sigh and turning around, "never mind."
Though, as revenge for getting his hopes up, he said,
"Let’s just go save my sister and Sable’s daughter."
Riley immediately froze at that information, but Liam didn’t bother stopping or turning around,
"Sable has a daughter?!"

Meanwhile, a distance away from the two, inside what seemed to be a former high-rise building, stood a man with a wide smile on his face.
Restrained to a chair before him was a girl with short black hair, red eyes and a blank expression.
Noa. freёwebnovel.com
On her neck was something that looked like a metal collar with a green light on the front. It was a tech that suppressed the Pragma below usable levels in any awakened human.
How had they gotten their hands on an HA and government-exclusive tech? That was a question for later.
"Isn’t this great?" The man said, his smile getting impossibly wider, "We’re finally reunited."
"Where’s the girl?" Noa simply asked, looking directly into the man’s green eyes.
Yes, she was scared, terrified, even, especially of the man standing before her.
But showing him her fear would only give him the twisted satisfaction he craved.
"Now now, darling," the man said, "this moment should only be about us, no one else."
Noa didn’t respond to that; instead, he just continued looking at him with a blank expression until he let out a sigh and stood up straight.
"Fine," he said and turned towards the door behind him before calling out, "Iris!"
The double doors opened, and Noa’s eyes immediately widened in horror.
The woman with dark skin and silver eyes, identified as Iris, was pushing in a wheelchair, and on it, with her head slumped down and blood actively dripping from her nose to her lap,
Was Lea.
"W-what did you do to her?" Noa asked, her red eyes seemingly glowing, and the green light on the collar turned red for a second before going back to normal.
Both Iris and the man were shocked for a second, but seeing that nothing had happened, they let out sighs of relief.
"Don’t worry love," Iris said with a kind smile on her face, "we’re just curious about her compatibility with a factor, so we fed her the pill."
Noa looked at them for a while before she suddenly started chuckling, a sound they had never heard from her before.
The chuckle quickly evolved into a maniacal laughter, which lasted quite a while.
When she was finally done laughing, Noa looked at the confused idiots before her as she said,
"You two are going to die."
