Chapter 1077: Chapter 1077: Blowing Up the House
Yun Jiao sighed. "Sleep on your stomach tonight. Don’t roll over in a daze and press on your back."
The two children agreed and backed out.
Before long, Jiang Youzhi came in.
Yun Jiao snorted, turned her head away, and couldn’t be bothered with him.
Jiang Youzhi’s steps paused for a moment. He walked over, put both hands on Yun Jiao’s shoulders. "Still angry?"
Yun Jiao turned and flung his hands off. "It’s not that I won’t let you teach the children. Making them kneel is enough. If you really have to hit them, smack their palms a couple times for form’s sake. How could you bring yourself to hit them that hard?"
Jiang Youzhi sighed. "When I hit them, it hurts me too."
"But not hitting won’t do either. The two of them are far too bold and reckless. If they don’t suffer a bit, they won’t remember."
He hesitated. "You protect them like this, you can’t stand to see them suffer the slightest bit. But they’ll have to go to the battlefield in the future—that’s real blades and real spears. When the time comes, what will we do?"
Yun Jiao acted as if she hadn’t heard him and still ignored him. Jiang Youzhi had things on his mind; he coaxed Yun Jiao a few times, and seeing she still paid him no heed, he sighed and went off to the side courtyard by himself.
Recently, whenever Jiang Youzhi had free time he would always go to the side courtyard. No one knew what he was tinkering with there. Yun Jiao didn’t bother with him. She went to the front courtyard to handle the household affairs, then washed up and got ready to sleep.
She had just been about to get into bed when she suddenly heard a dull bang not far away, like something had exploded.
Yun Jiao was startled and hurried out to ask the maid, "Where did that sound just come from?"
The maid pointed toward the side courtyard. "From the side courtyard. Master is over there!"
Yun Jiao was extremely uneasy. She didn’t even care that her hair had already been taken down, and rushed straight toward the side courtyard.
As soon as she stepped into the yard she saw Du Ruo supporting Jiang Youzhi as they stood outside. Jiang Youzhi’s whole face was pitch-black, and he kept coughing, while smoke was still pouring out of the room behind them.
Yun Jiao ran over and grabbed Jiang Youzhi’s arm. "Sanlang, what happened to you? Where are you hurt?"
Jiang Youzhi coughed a few times. "Cough, cough, I’m fine. It’s nothing at all."
Looking at his blackened face, Yun Jiao was almost in tears. "You still say it’s nothing—your face is all black!"
"Is it?" Jiang Youzhi reached up and touched his face, and his hand came away covered in soot.
He comforted Yun Jiao. "It’s nothing, just blackened by smoke."
Yun Jiao couldn’t help thumping him once. "What on earth are you doing, trying to blow up the house?"
Jiang Youzhi gave a wry smile. "I’ll tell you when we go back."
He turned and instructed Du Ruo, "In a while, tidy up the room inside."
Yun Jiao was still convinced Jiang Youzhi must be hurt somewhere else. Carefully supporting him, she helped him back to their room. The maid brought in water, and after Jiang Youzhi washed his face clean, Yun Jiao saw a thin scratch on his face and frowned. "You are hurt after all."
She turned around to get medicine.
Jiang Youzhi had originally thought it would take several days this time to coax Yun Jiao back around. Who knew that after he got a little hurt, she’d only be busy feeling sorry for him and forget all about being angry.
He was secretly delighted when Yun Jiao came over with the ointment, and he quickly pressed down the corners of his lips that had started to curl up.
Yun Jiao carefully applied ointment to his face. "What exactly are you doing? How did you even manage to make something explode?"
As she spoke, she also started taking off his robe.
There was a strong smell of saltpeter on the robe. Yun Jiao couldn’t help muttering, "You’re not seriously trying to develop explosives, are you?"
Jiang Youzhi’s eyes lit up. "What are ’explosives’?"
Realizing she’d let something slip again, Yun Jiao had no choice but to explain, "It’s a kind of thing that will explode once you light it."
"A bit like firecrackers, but with much greater power than those."
