Chapter 218: Who Are You?

"He is but..."

"But what? Speak now and speak clearly," She snapped sternly as she swung her head around to face the shadow guard.

Though there was no light in that tunnel, the fiery gaze in Sierra’s eyes was unmistakable.

"He’s not the one you are searching for," the shadow guard explained.

She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. What did he mean? There was only one King of Drakin, and it had to be Alistair, did it not?

"Is this a trap of sorts? Are you stalling me on purpose?" Sierra seethe in anger as she grabbed the shadow guard’s collar.

She knew they were Alistair’s personal guards. They were not loyal to her, only to him. Still, would they work against her? Or was there something more to it that she was not seeing? Sierra pinned the shadow guard against the wall. Her patience was running thin.

Not caring for what the shadow guard was trying to say, Sierra made her choice then and there. She found the switch on the wall and pressed it. The door began to shift. She could no longer feel the presence of the shadow guard, but Sierra did not care.

If they can’t give her a clear answer on the situation, she would just have to figure things out herself. The blinding light from the room threw her off at first, but soon, she adjusted to her surroundings.

Everything seemed normal and quiet.

Still, Sierra did not let her guard down. She carefully took a step forward as she took a look around. Sierra walked into the bedroom, quickly noticing a sleeping figure.

"Alistair," she whispered beneath her breath as she rushed forward.

As she got closer, something stopped her in her tracks. The person who was sleeping on the bed, tucked in under the covers, wore the mask Alistair usually wore. But there was something different about them.

That wasn’t Alistair.

Sierra bit her lip. Had it been so long since they last met that she could no longer recognize him? This was his quarters, his bedroom. Who else would be wearing his mask, sleeping in his bed?

Sierra reached out her hand. Holding her breath, she removed the mask the man was wearing. The man flickered his eyes open and looked up at Sierra. She stumbled back, dropping the mask on the ground as she retreated, gripping tightly on the hilt of her sword.

"Who... who are you?" she asked in confusion as she pointed her sword at the unknown man.

A million thoughts raced through her mind. Eventually, she arrived at what she could only assume to be the most logical option.

"What have you done to Alistair?" she asked through gritted teeth and knotted brows.

"Paramount Sierra? You’re here?" The man immediately got down on his knees and hung his head low.

"Who are you? Speak now, before I kill you where you kneel," Sierra warned.

"Please, Your Grace, listen carefully. Your life is in danger, you must leave at once," the man warned, "I’m one of the shadow guards. We’ve managed to evacuate King Alistair to an alternate location for the time being, but..."

Just then, the doors to the room burst open and guards began to flood the room. Sierra cursed beneath her breath as she drew both her swords.

"Leave now," Sierra whispered to the shadow guard, "Go to Vyrena and Dygo Blackfire and ask them to get Alistair to safety. I’ll take care of things here."

The shadow guard was about to protest but Sierra pushed him into the passageway that was still open and closed it behind her.

"Go!" she said to him before turning back to face the incoming guards.

With Opal by her side, Sierra did not fear anything. Knowing Alistair was likely in a safe location brought her some peace of mind. Now she just needed to survive to go to him. A few shadow guards appeared from the corners of the room.

"Your Grace, please allow us to lend you our blade. To protect you," one of them spoke.

Sierra shook her head, "No, go to Alistair. Your duty is to serve him, not me. I can handle things on my own."

The shadow guards hesitated for a moment but decided to do as she asked, disappearing into the dark corners of the room. Sierra braced herself for the guards who were about to find her in Alistair’s room. She was dressed in light-weight battle armor, ready for anything.

"Paramount Sierra? What are you doing here?" one of the royal guards gasped in shock when he saw her.

"Sierra? For real?" Agnes’ voice rang loud and clear, causing Sierra to grit her teeth. freēwebnovel.com

As soon as both women meet, an air of hostility descended upon the room. Sierra gripped her swords tightly, ready to attack. She was not about to go down without a fight.

Agnes glanced past Sierra. Her face turned pale when she realized Alistair was no longer here, sleeping on the bed.

"What have you done to his Majesty? Did you kidnap King Alistair? Guards, cease her!" Agnes ordered.

"Who are you to give such orders? Ordering the guards to do this and that," Sierra scoffed.

"I have the right to do so!" Agnes insisted, like a child throwing a tantrum, "Royal Consort Cassandra escaped after poisoning His Majesty! I am in charge now."

The smirk on her face irked Sierra. Agnes truly believed she was in the right. She thought her plan had succeeded, but it was unraveling before her eyes. Sierra knew there had to be more to the situation at hand.

So, she decided to play along for the time being. But that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to do things her way.

"Is that so?" Sierra asked, "What proof do you have that Cassandra was the one behind it?"

"Proof? She was most certainly guilty! If not, why would she have needed to run?"

"Perhaps because you were chasing after her? Trying to pin the crime on her when she did nothing?"

Agnes’ face was red with anger.

"I will not stand here and let you insult me like this! Guards! Arrest her!"

"Are you sure you want to do that?" Sierra warned with a grin.

"Are you threatening me?" Agnes asked with a smirk.
