Chapter 210: Pointing Fingers

Alistair finished the final line of his letter. After the ink dried, he quickly fitted it into the envelope before attaching it to Paco, his silverwing. The silverwing was perched on the stand, next to his writing desk.

As he held out his hand to the silverwing and it leaped onto his hand.

He leaned in close and whispered, "You know where to go."

Alistair walked towards the open window and released the silverwing into the sky. Paco soared up high, circling once before taking off into the distance. The silverwing held his last letter to Sierra before he embarked on his journey to her.

He couldn’t wait to see her, knowing the next time they met would bring them closer to their wedding. When the news was announced in Drakin, the reaction of the court and his consorts were within his expectations.

But none of it mattered to him. Only Sierra mattered. Hence regardless of the grievances raised by the court, he pushed them away. He sacked some, beheaded two, and eventually, the court gave their blessing.

For his consorts, the reactions were interesting enough. Cassandra was silent. She did not contest it, making him wonder if Sierra had already been in contact with her. On the other hand, Agnes kicked up a fuss on Cassandra’s behalf.

Either way, he could not be bothered with them. Those were political unions after all. free𝑤ebnovel.com

"Everything has been prepared for your departure, Your Majesty," a shadow guard informed Alistair.

Alistair nodded before dismissing the guard. He returned to his room to make the final preparations. He’d been so wrapped up in preparations, that he failed to notice something was amiss in his room.

An incense burner had been lit by a servant. By the time he took notice, it was too late. Alistair turned to search for the source of the smell, only to trip on his foot and fall to the ground.

"Your Majesty!" One of the shadow guards gasped in shock as Alistair collapsed.

Guards who were stationed outside of the room burst in, shocked to see their King on the ground. They quickly helped him to bed before calling for the royal healers to come.

Outside the King’s Quarters, Consort Agnes had been waiting patiently for her moment.

And this was it.

"What’s going on here?" She asked, her voice filled with worry as she grabbed hold of one of the servants who rushed out of the King’s Quarters.

"His Majesty collapsed in his room!" The servant yelped before rushing off.

"Collapsed?" Agnes gasped in surprise.

She rushed into the quarters at once and burst into Alistair’s room. She covered her nose as soon as she entered, smelling the strong incense. When the shadow guards saw her, they knelt before her.

"Consort Agnes," they greeted her.

"What happened?" She asked, on the verge of tears as she glanced over to see Alistair in bed.

"His Majesty collapsed. We’re still investigating the cause."

"What is that smell?" Agnes asked as she sniffed the air.

When she came close to the incense burner, she gasped in shock and threw it out immediately. Everyone was stunned by her actions, wondering what was going on.

"The King has been poisoned! Poisoned by Royal Consort Cassandra!" She exclaimed in horror.

Everyone was stunned by her accusations. By now, some ministers of the court had also arrived on site. In Alistair’s weakened state, the barrier spell he had put up was no longer effective, hence anyone and everyone could enter and exit with ease.

"What is going on here?" One of the ministers demanded to know.

Agnes recounted the details to them immediately.

"Royal Consort Cassandra is behind this? What proof do you have?" One of the ministers asked.

"This incense. It’s from the royal consort’s home kingdom! Not only is it poisonous, but it’s also likely to be fatal!" She spewed.

"What in Drakin is going on in here?" Cassandra’s voice rang loud and clear as she entered the room.

As soon as she caught wind of what had happened, she came immediately. All eyes were on her. A cold shiver ran down her spine as she saw the smirk on Agnes’ face. Cassandra clenched her jaw. As she was about to clarify what was happening, she was too late.

"Guards, arrest the royal consort at once!" Agnes commanded.

"Arrest me? What have I done?" Cassandra asked in confusion, refusing to submit.

"What have you done? You’ve attempted to murder the King!" One of the ministers yelled.

Realizing her life was in danger, Cassandra took a step back. She knew full well Agnes must have something to do with what was happening. With the crime pinned on her, Cassandra knew she could not get caught. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

But what could she do? Unlike Sierra, she never trained to defend herself with a sword. She had only been taught to sharpen her mind and abide by the rules. She had done so to the best of her abilities. Even then, it was not enough.

’I guess I will have to rely on myself,’ she thought to herself as the royal guards closed in on her.

"I have done nothing of this sort," Cassandra put her foot down, "What proof do you have?"

"Cassandra, confess your crimes!" Agnes pleaded, tears falling from her eyes, "you know what you’ve done. Why won’t you admit it?"

"You-" Cassandra fumed in anger as she took a step forward.

She wanted to strangle Agnes with her own two hands. But her anger was her first mistake. She fell into the trap Agnes had made for her. Agnes cowered in fear, shaking in terror as she fell to the ground.

The distance between them was still more than arm’s length, yet Agnes looked terrified. As if she had been hurt by Cassandra before.

"Arrest the royal consort at once!" One of the ministers ordered, "She’s trying to harm Consort Agnes!"

The royal guards leaped into action, advancing on Cassandra. But before they could get to her, Cassandra’s maid blocked them. The small entourage that had followed the royal consort came to her aid too.

"You can’t arrest her without proper proof or a trial!"
