Chapter 4: Headmaster Leonart

The only way this girl could be responsible for this murder was if she was some sort of psychopath, but Percy had seen psychopaths before, and he fought many of them in the past, so he would’ve easily recognized if that was the case. This girl looked genuinely desperate for someone to believe her!

"Wait." freewebnoveℓ.com

Percy finally spoke up when he realized he couldn’t let this go on, and the guard who had been taking the girl out of the room stopped and turned to Percy curiously. Officer Viva and the guards who were kneeling beside the blonde girl’s dead body looked towards Percy with curious gazes as well, and they wondered what he was trying to do. Percy hopped off his seat and walked up to the lynx girl. He leaned down and looked her in the eyes for a few long seconds, and when he stood up, he spoke in a confident tone:

"I don’t think she did it."

"What? Who do you think you are to make a claim like that?"

Officer Viva stepped in front of Percy angrily, but Rita spoke up from behind.

"I don’t think she was responsible either. I spoke to her before the incident, and she didn’t seem like the sort of person to do something like this. And if Percy says she didn’t do it, then there has to be some other explanation."

"Lana thinks she’s innocent too!"

Lana jumped to her feet and spoke confidently, and Officer Viva looked from all three librarians before her scowl deepened as she said.

"You are obstructing our duties now. If you take this any further than this, then we will have to arrest you as well."

Percy rolled his eyes nonchalantly, and Rita let out a huff in annoyance. Lana was glaring at Viva, and Viva wondered what gave these people the audacity to stand up to the City Guard like this!

The Aquinas City guards were a branch of the Kingdom Guards that had been formed a decade ago after the great hero Verati ended the demihuman war. The Kingdom guards were created to uphold peace, and as one of their branches, the Aquinas Guard also had the same duties. Most people in the city wouldn’t even think about standing up to an Aquinas city guard like this, because the moment the guard notices you are disrupting the peace, they have every right to arrest you!

But for the first time, Viva was seeing a group of people who didn’t look like they cared about getting arrested! They were standing up to the guards like it was a normal thing to do!

"You three really want to be arrested for –"

Ka-Cha!

The sound of the library door opening echoed through the room, and everyone turned to see who had entered. But the moment Percy’s eyes landed on the man, he let out a low groan while turning away!

The man who entered was old with white hair and a well-trimmed beard. He walked with a cane, and he had on a well-made three-piece suit that made him look very gentlemanly! Officer Viva’s eyes widened once they landed on the man!

"Headmaster Leonart! It’s a pleasure to meet you!"

Viva greeted the headmaster with enthusiasm, but the headmaster only nodded to her before he turned to Percy with his widest smile!

"Percival! It’s been too long! Too long! I told you to come visit me last week, but you never came! Do you know how much you hurt the heart of this old man!? I already prepared a game of chess for us, but I can tell you don’t see me as a worthy opponent!"

The headmaster walked up to Percy and gave him a one-handed hug around the shoulder, and Percy did his best not to throw the old man off him.

"I just didn’t want to listen to your nagging. You’ve gotten louder in your old age."

"Hahaha! You always know what to say to this old man. Come to my office later, let’s have a quick go at a game of chess. I never get bored when I’m playing with you."

"I’ll think about it. Isn’t there something else you should be focusing on?" free𝑤ebnovel.com

"Ah, yes! How could I have forgotten!"

The headmaster cleared his throat, and he finally looked towards the dead body lying on the floor. They had covered the girl’s body with a white cloth, but the blood stains on the floor were still obvious. The lynx girl was staring at the headmaster fearfully, and the headmaster turned to Viva and asked her to explain what had happened.

The officers in the room had all been stunned to see the way the headmaster treated Percy just now. There wasn’t a single person in this city who didn’t know the headmaster, and it was normal for the headmaster to receive the highest form of respect for his contributions during the demihuman war a few years ago! He was undoubtedly one of the most decorated mages of his generation, and yet here he was talking to a mere librarian like they were friends? In fact, it almost looked like the headmaster was bothering the librarian!

Viva did not understand who this man was for the headmaster to act this way, but she put her curiosity aside for a moment to answer the headmaster’s question.

Viva told the headmaster what they had found out about the girl who fell and how multiple witnesses claimed that her friend was responsible for it. Viva also told the headmaster about Percy’s claim that the girl was innocent and how Percy was obstructing justice.

Once the headmaster was fully briefed, he turned to Percy and asked a simple question.

"Are you sure?"

Percy hummed nonchalantly, and that was all the confirmation the headmaster needed!

"I think we need to look into this some more."

Viva felt her eyes widen when she heard this from the headmaster, and she looked over at Percy in absolute disbelief! What in the world was going on here!? The headmaster actually believed the words of some librarian over the city guards!?

The headmaster looked over at Viva for a moment, and he asked her if she disagreed. Viva swallowed as she looked at the lynx girl before she spoke.

"We still need to arrest her, Headmaster. She was involved in the murder, so she needs to be detained."

The headmaster nodded. He knew that these were the rules, so he couldn’t really tell them not to do what they were supposed to. So the headmaster brought up a different idea instead.

"I want you to personally investigate this matter very closely. A reliable source says she was not involved, so I am sure there is more to this than meets the eye."

"Is your reliable source the librarian?"

"Hohoh, are you looking down on him? I’ll have you know this librarian is the greatest chess prodigy this kingdom has ever produced! He possesses skills beyond your wildest imagination! He is truly one of a kind!"

The headmaster started to laugh again, and Viva just stared at him like he had gone crazy. Viva looked over at Percy and saw him talking in a low voice to Lana. Lana was nodding happily to what Percy was saying, and her tail was wagging around like a dog listening to its owner! At his side, Rita stood silent as a bat, and she watched the interaction between Percy and Lana with a smile on her face.

What sort of dysfunctional group of people is this?

The headmaster tapped his cane on the floor and spoke:

"Very well, you may take my student for temporary detainment, but I will be informed of her well-being every hour to ensure she is treated right. In the meantime, I want you to investigate this properly, and of course, you’ll have help from our resident librarian, Percival."

"Huh?"
