Chapter 14: Training with AI Generated Resonants

------

Theon slowly stood up from the ground, his expression calm and collected as though the ten E Rank Resonants before him posed no threat.

And as if on schedule to mock his confidence, the system window promptly popped up in front of him, causing his eyes to widen in surprise.

[The host is currently about to face ten E-Rank Resonants.]

[As the successor of three ancient gods and wielder of the Godly System, opponents of this level should pose no challenge.]

[Quest Issued: Prove your worth.]

[Objective: Defeat all ten E-Rank Resonants without sustaining a single injury.]

[Rewards: +2 stat points to all stats.]

[Failure Penalty 1: The Godly System will revoke its acknowledgment of the host.]

[Failure Penalty 2: Death.]

He had expected many things, but a quest— and in this kind of situation was shocking. "I mean I’m just training— and what the fuck is up with this penalty." He said staring at the screen exasperated.

He lifted his eyes and stared at the ten E Rank Resonants that approached him slowly. Seven of them seemed to possess either physical or biological mutations as part of their bodies seemed to stretch or looked rock hard.

While the three at the back seemed to possess elemental mutations, as they coated their weapons with an aura made of flames and water, while the last wire rock gauntlets.

"Well," he grinned. "I’ve always loved challenges— it makes things interesting."

"Status!" He called out, and the system window popped out once more.

"I guess I should start of with Flash Step." He grinned, then as if he had practiced it for years, lightning arcs slowly coated his entire body and then— he disappeared.

Appearing a moment later in front of one of the E Rank Resonants, his back turned against them.

"Luckily, I practiced martial arts on earth too." He smiled, then twisted his torso and released a perfect reverse roundhouse kick, that struck the Resonants directly on his head, sending him flying across the field before landing on the ground and bursting into small, bright pixels.

"I see—" Theon muttered. "So that’s what happens when they die."

Then, without breaking momentum, both of his hands snapped forward and grabbed the Resonant beside him by the head.

His knee immediately snapped forward and slammed into the Resonant’s skull. The Resonant’s head flung backwards, blood spraying from his nose.

The other Resonant’s brains had finally registered what had happened, and immediately rushed Theon.

One rushed in with a large sword in hand, mid swing— but Theon reacted faster. He stepped into the path of the swing, and used his hand to parry the attack, sending the sword flying from the Resonant’s grasp.

Then with his free hand, he threw a fast punch that struck the Resonant square in the gut, sending him flying.

Another approached Theon quickly from behind, planning to impale Theon with the short sword he held, but just as the sword was about to stab into Theon’s back, the sword as well as the Resonant suddenly froze in place, both held by a dark, shadow like tentacle.

"Umbra Bind," Theon whispered softly, then sharply turned and slammed his lightning coated fist into the face of the resonant, slamming him to the ground.

Theon slowly turned to face the E Rank Resonants left alive. Only six of them were left behind. The three elemental mutated Resonants still hadn’t moved from their location, while the other three flanked him, two at his front, and one behind him.

They all stared at each other for a few seconds, then the resonant behind him rushed in— except, he seemed incredibly fast for someone of his size.

Before Theon could react, the resonant reached out and grabbed Theon, holding him in place with his two large arms.

Theon’s eyes narrowed. "They’ve changed tactics. I can see why this level is hard—"

The two Resonants in front of him rushed in with spears in their grasp, ready to impale both Theon and the resonant holding him tightly.

"Sadly—" Theon whispered, before the shadow like tentacles appeared from the ground once more and wrapped themselves tightly around the bodies of the two Resonants, holding them tightly.

Of course they tried to break free, but the tentacles grasps only became tighter the more they struggled.

Lightning arcs formed across Theon’s body once more as his eyes glowed brightly, then as though removing a weightless coat, he shoved against the large arms of the resonant.

Pushing his arms away, Theon jumped into the air, the his leg snapped downward as he executed and axe kick directly unto the skull of the large resonant.

The force was strong enough, that a small crater had been created beneath the feet of the resonant as it burst into tiny pixels, joining its fallen AI friends.

"Now, as for you two," Theon’s gaze changed focus to the two Resonants still held by his ’Umbra Bind’. He looked at a fallen short sword and grabbed it.

Giving it a few swings, he smiled and activated ’Death Slash’. The essence circulating his throughout his body suddenly felt cold as an aura of death suddenly surrounded him.

This cold Essence slowly moved towards the short sword until it had completely enveloped it, making the short sword look dark and sinister.

Theon stared at the dark short sword for a second, then swung the sword horizontally sending a sharp arc of darkness that flew towards the tightly bound Resonants at shocking speeds.

The moment it made contact with their bodies, they where immediately cut in half, and the remnants of their bodies began to decay, before turning into bright pixels as well.

"Ohhh!" Theon’s eyes widened. ’This ability is far more dangerous than I thought.’

He snapped out of his thoughts when he began feeling movement, the last three E-Rank Resonants surrounded him.

"So it’s just you three left, huh?" Theon tilted his head slightly. "This shouldn’t take long."

Few hours later.

Theon lay on the white cold ground of the training room with his eyes closed, his face filled with beads of sweat. His chest moved inward and outward at a steady rhythm.

’This is the second time I am stuck recovering my essence like this.’ Theon thought quietly. ’Even with a triple resonance core, using those three abilities causes a heavy drain on my essence pool.’

He opened his eyes slowly. ’At least I was able to accomplish what I came for. I finally have a general grasp on how to use each ability in combat.’

Just as he had said a few hours ago, he was able to defeat the last three E rank Resonants with relative ease. The system gave him his rewards after and he could immediately feel its effects.

After receiving the rewards, he still felt like he could push himself forward, and so he challenged five D-Rank Resonants at medium difficulty.

This one, he struggled a lot more than he did with the E ranks, after all the difference between an E rank and a D rank was like a small pond and a massive ocean.

Theon ended up failing the challenge completely, after almost draining out his entire essence pool. He was left with a few injuries as well, but that didn’t bring him down.

Instead, after waiting a while for his essence to restore, he did the training challenge once more. It was less of a struggle this time, but still— it was tough five D-Rank Resonants, and so he failed once more.

However, during his third trial, he was able to emerge victorious, only because the D-Rank Resonants always used the same pattern when attacking.

If it was a life and death situation, he would only be able to hold off two D-Ranks at the same time.

He would be destroyed if he tried challenging five at the same time.

He sighed softly. ’At least now I know I can challenge a D-Rank resonant even as an E-Rank.’

Theon slowly sat up, and stared at his hands. During the past few hours, he had thought of something.

He couldn’t just use three of his abilities openly. That would raise a lot of questions, as it was abnormal enough for a resonant to awaken two abilities, talk more of three.

So he made a decision to only use one of his abilities while in the open, in case the need ever arrived that is.

He immediately removed the thought of using ’Death Slash’ as that was too dangerous. Narrowing his options to only ’Umbra Bind’ and ’Flash Step’.

It was a hard decision as both abilities where incredibly effective in battle, one gave him an added boost in speed, while the other helped restrict and crush his opponents.

At the end of the day, he decided to go with ’Flash Step’, as he felt it would be more believable that he had achieved a breakthrough, allowing him to unlock such an ability.

Lightning was also a relatively common ability so it solidified his reason for picking it.

"I believe I am done here," Theon muttered as he raised himself from the cold white ground. His essence had already recovered enough, so it was finally time to take his leave.

"Now," Theon’s gaze sharpened. "Let’s go and see that bastard, Adrian."
