Chapter 85: Chapter 85: The New Dorm
"This will be your identification token. You will have to show it everywhere in the sect to get anything done through official channels."
"Here is your new robe; you will be wearing this all the time when you are on duty."
"Here is a one-day pass to the ground floor of the Nine Hell Library. With this first hell pass, you will only be able to enter the first floor. The librarian will explain the rest to you."
In the very conspicuous corner of a spacious hall, Shen Yuan was standing in line like every other servant before him to collect his things. He watched as the man behind the counter tossed one thing after another from below the table towards him with a clear look of distaste on his face.
He looked like someone who was being forced to sit there.
Whenever his eyes met with the servants’ standing before him, distaste would turn into disgust.
"Token. Robes. Pass. That’s everything." Counting the items one last time, he pushed them across the small table, almost making them slip off.
Fortunately Shen Yuan caught them.
The man sitting behind the counter in grey robes with detailed engravings of red and blue patterns all over did not even look like he cared about what he had done; he just looked down at the booklet before him and noted Shen Yuan’s name.
"This will be all. Unlike Juniors, who choose their assignments, Seniors are assigned theirs. Until then, you will be living in a joint housing building. The number is written on the back of the token."
Once he finished speaking, the outer disciple shooed Shen Yuan away like a stray dog.
The smile never wavered from Shen Yuan’s face throughout the whole interaction. He just turned around and left the hall.
On his way back he saw Ce Xin and Xin Delun in the line as well, but there was no sign of Shi Jin.
He had already met them a couple of times since coming to the sect. But Shen Yuan did not interact with them at all.
Even when he was with Shi Jin, before he acted like there was no bad blood between the two of them. Shi Jin was no different from him.
If only someone knew what was going on in their minds, they might just go pale from sheer horror.
Shen Yuan left the hall and made his way towards the living dorm he was supposed to live in. The place was right on the periphery of the outer sect.
On his way he realised how the outer disciples really felt about the servants.
Overpricing the servants.
Breaking their bones if they so much as stepped in their way.
Shen Yuan even saw a male outer disciple asking a female servant if she had been assigned to a task.
When the woman said no, the man directly picked her up by the throat and took her away into one of the shadowy alleyways.
By the time he came out, his mouth and robes were covered in blood. There was also a sudden increase in the aura around him and the madness in his eyes.
Ba...
Shen Yuan acted like he had not seen anything and moved along; before long he reached his destination.
It was a broken building that looked no different from an abandoned mansion haunted by someone’s ghost.
The front gate was crooked; there were cracks in the outer decorations.
But even then, there was no dirt or insects crawling around. Shen Yuan noticed many people standing in small groups in and around the entrance of the building.
Most of them had the same cultivation as the rest of the servants who arrived along with him, but a select few had a powerful presence that stood out.
Just as Shen Yuan was about to enter through the front gate, one of the guys standing near the door extended his feet at the last moment, trying to make Shen Yuan stumble and make a fool of himself.
But...
Stomp!
Shen Yuan did not even look down and leaned forward a little while taking the step. Instead of getting entangled in the boy’s legs, Shen Yuan’s step landed straight on the extended foot.
What followed next was the sound of bones being crushed.
"Argh!" The Servant cried in agony, alerting the others nearby. The wannabe thugs beside the man crying on the ground stepped forward to take revenge on Shen Yuan, but they were stopped by a cold, emotionless glare from him.
Shen Yuan merely looked at them, and they felt like their bodies had been frozen solid. They had never felt a fear like that in their lives.
[A New Techniques has been created—The Gaze of Predator.]
[A technique derived from the years of experience in killing and newfound interest in Qi. Using your eyes, you can inflict fear onto others.]
[The effects are receded with greater difference in cultivation base.]
[Technique is registered as a Profound Grade Technique—Low Rank]
[1 Strand Of Qi has been awarded.]
[Qi: 165/1000]
Shen Yuan ignored the notification inside his mind and climbed the stairs under the watchful eyes of the crowd.
On the second floor he searched for the number etched on the back of his metalic identity token.
67
The door was slightly ajar, and with his cultivation Shen Yuan could hear the debate going on inside the room.
"I will take that bed."
"Why, oh Mr Smallhead? Pray tell me the reason you should be the one taking this bed and not me."
"What are you talking about? this bed clearly belongs to me."
"I came here first. Stop flaunting your cultivation base; you know fighting is forbidden in the dorm."
"Why are you so interested in the bed? You will be leaving here soon now that your mission has come."
Shen Yuan noticed that there were four different voices that were fighting over a bed. He opened the door and saw the group of servants standing in front of a very decent-looking bed with clean sheets and a cover.
The sound of the door opening alerted the four inside, and they all snapped their heads towards the door.
