Chapter 88: Do you know me that well?
By the time Ryle finished cooking and was doing some garnishing, Daisy’s surprise had turned into awe, ’’You made congee...’’ And that too, he had made it in authentic Chinese way, like she had grown up seeing the Chen Manor doing that.
’’Yes, I learnt it from my mother.’’
It was rare for him to talk about his mother. In fact, the only time she had heard him bring it up was back during the Spring Festival when they were in Beijing, ’’She must be even better with this,’’ Daisy raised the tray, containing the bowl in her hand.
"She was,’’ Ryle uttered.
Daisy stiffened, realizing what the man’s words implied.
However, Ryle seemed to unaffected while talking about it, ’’She had pursued her higher education in Shanghai and she had a fondness for the culture. She would reminisce about it all the time and every once in a while, she would take me there."
Daisy listened to him silently without interrupting his words. When he turned silent, she scooped a spoonful of the congee and placed it in her mouth, she could not help but look at him, ’’It’s nice.’’
’’You look so surprised. Is it that shocking that I can cook good food?"
’’Yes,’’ she responded without filter.
Ryle chuckled.
She ate in silence, sitting on the barstool near the kitchen counter while he stood on the other side, looking at her.
’’Why did you disguise yourself as Dexter?"
Daisy paused when she heard Ryle’s question. She gulped the food in her mouth and looked at the bowl thoughtfully, ’’Because the job requirements were as such. You wanted a male secretary.’’
Ryle sighed, ’’If you appeared for the interview, nobody would be turning you down just because you are not a man. Your talents would not have allowed them to.’’
’’You had the last say,’’ she said after contemplating over his words for some time, ’’And I did not want to stay in the grey area back then. I like the conditions of the job, the money that came with it and I knew that I can make it without going through hassles.’’
Ryle’s lips twitched. Her honesty about her dishonesty was rather... indigestible. He could not help but look at the ceilings.
’’I looked into your background before appearing for the job, not an in-depth investigation but just enough to know that you had your different faces,’’ Daisy put another spoonful of congee in her mouth. Once she gulped it down, she continued saying, ’’Since the man I was about to work for seemed deceptive, it rid me of any potential guilt for my deceit."
’’And when you left...’’
’’I saw your torture cell that night when I had recently discovered that I was pregnant,’’ Daisy thought back to that time. That was the time she had run out of that place, protectively with one hand over her stomach, ’’I wanted to abord the child before that.’’
A frown settled between Ryle’s brows. The thought of something happening to that adorable little ball who came as a plus one with Daisy Chen made a weird discomfort spread in his chest.
’’But when I saw you torturing the subordinate of that drug lord for deceiving, I realized I was not in a better position than him. If you came to know about my lies, then I would be the person locked in one of those cells. It was the first time when I knew I wanted to protect my child...’’
’’Daisy,’’ Ryle cut her off. freewēbnoveℓ.com
Daisy looked into the man’s eyes.
Ryle had an overpowering guilt consuming him, a sort of disappointment that he felt with himself. Consciously or unconsciously, he made her feel that way. Unsafe. His fingers curled into a fist, ’’I would never.’’
’’Hmm?"
’’You would never be in that place.’’
’’You might be saying that now but would things have been the same then? When you did not know me as Daisy and you discovered that your subordinate was keeping secrets from you?’’
Daisy lowered her head and continued eating while she spoke in between, ’’We are both different people, bound by our own reasons and decisions. I would not blame you for it.’’
"I would never put you through something like that,’’ he did not know why it was so hard for her to believe those simple words of his.
’’Even if you did, I will get away,’’ Daisy said with a straight face but a small fleetingly appeared on her a face.
A small sure and knowing smile that she believed in her capabilities. Ryle’s eyes twinkled like the boundless stars in the midnight sky.
After Daisy finished eating, she wiped her mouth and drank some mouth before she looked at Ryle solemnly, "There is something else that I need from you.’’
’’Aren’t you needing a bit too much from me, Miss Chen?" Ryle leaned forward on the kitchen counter, a cheeky grin crossing his face, ’’There I thought you were a person who practiced restraint. But if you are oh-so-needy and need things from me, then I can offer you what you need. Just say the word.’’
Daisy glared at the man before she pushed herself to her feet, ’’Forget it. I’ll figure it out myself.’’
He hurriedly grabbed her hand, bursting out in laughter when the woman turned to leave, ’’Kidding. Tell me what you need,’’ he crossed the kitchen counter while holding her hand.
"What poison was that dart laced with? Was it an ordinary one...’’ Daisy paused before adding, ’’Or a rare one?"
’’I have not looked into it’s rarity but it’s not common. The dart was covered in the poison of one of the most venomous scorpions."
’’Great,’’ Daisy’s eyes sparkled.
Ryle’s lips twitched as he looked at the woman as if she had descended from Mars. He just told her that the poison that almost infiltrated her body was one of the most dangerous venoms and she responded with a ’great’.
Good lords, this woman.
Ryle sighed deeply.
She looked at him, ’’You must have looked into the sources of the poison as well. Get me the information. I want that.’’
’’Do you know me that well?" he raised a brow, eyes sparkling with amusement and something incomprehensible.
’’I do,’’ Daisy replied unconsciously, her thoughts still revolving around what she had in mind.
