Chapter 80: I can help you settle billions
’’H-He means it,’’ Flustered, Benjamin spurted those words. He was right there when Ryle was getting his statements recording and he had known the man for long enough to understand that he had no intentions or whatsoever of playing with Daisy on this matter. But he held grudges and hence, he was dead serious about the lifetime contract.
’’I am neither a service, nor a product. What am I selling by signing this contract? Myself?" A murderous glint flashed across her eyes as she looked at the man.
Benjamin lowered his head. Even he did not understand what his Boss was thinking. At this point, he felt misunderstood as well.
Daisy turned around and looked at the team of lawyers and Benjamin, ’’You can leave now but the next time you think of stepping foot in my vicinity without proper notice, do remember my identity and be prepared to face my lawyers.’’
Benjamin’s face blanched. It was only in that moment that he remembered that she was the elder daughter of the Chen Family. Despite her estranged relations with her family, they were still blood-related. They would be making an enemy out of the Chen Family by acting against Daisy and that would be too high profile. He wondered if it was a part of his Boss’s calculation as well.
’’But you do need to inform us about your choice otherwise this matter will be directed towards the court...’’
Benjamin wanted to slap a hand over the lawyer’s impudent mouth by then but those words were already spoken. What court? It was just an empty threat. Things of Harper Societies were solved at different court where Ryle himself was the judge, the one in charge and Daisy was well aware of that. Who was this old guy bluffing and trying to scare with the mention of court?
’’We will not be putting Mr. Harper through the hassles of going to a court when this matter can be solved with a little money,’’ a voice rang in the hallway, taking everyone’s attention.
Daisy glanced at the newcomer and she was briefly surprised when she saw the familiar face, not expecting the person to arrive at her place at that hour.
Lu Xian fixed the sleeve of his suit jacket and strode towards the crowd, "It’s rather ungentlemanly of Mr. Harper to send you all over for a petty amount of money.’’
$50 billions are a petty amount of money?
With the said, the man did not pay any further attention to the people outside Daisy’s apartment, ’’Am I welcomed inside?" he asked the woman.
Daisy looked at him for a moment before she nodded and opened the door for him. Once he stepped inside, she also followed him, closing the door behind her.
’’What are you doing here at my place?" Daisy questioned the man as they made their way towards the living room.
"I was here for some business and wanted to send you flowers but then I remembered that you are not especially fond of them. Then, I thought I should pay you a visit perhaps,’’ the man said, standing near her couch.
Daisy motioned him to take a seat, ’’And you assumed that I would be fond of your visit.’’
Lu Xian paused, ’’One can hope.’’
’’How did you get my address?"
"I had to look for it of course,’’ When Daisy’s gaze shifted slightly, the man explained, ’’You don’t expect me to go to your work... former workplace and formally ask them where you live, do you?"
Daisy turned silent. It seemed like the man overheard her whole conversation with Ryle’s lawyers and he only stepped out when he had enough insight about the situation.
’’But, tell me Daisy, how are you doing now?"
"What happened to me?" Daisy questioned the man without missing a beat. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
Lu Xian looked at her solemnly, ’’I am aware of the attack. You don’t have to pretend.’’
When silence dawned inside the living room, Lu Xian explained, ’’When I looked for your address, I discovered that you spent the past few days with Ryle, first in Shanghai then in his mansion in Los Angeles. Upon a little further digging, it was not hard to discover what transpired around you in the past few days.’’
Daisy did not think it was as simple as Lu Xian made it sound to be. She had spent a long time working for Ryle so she knew how he functioned. He would leave tracks for such matters to be investigated by outsiders but since Lu Xian knew so much about the whole incident, that only told her how deep his connections were.
’’But then it seems like you both have a fall out now, your real identity is exposed already,’’ Lu Xian said thoughtfully, ’’Was it his doing?" the man asked silently.
Daisy was not surprised by his sharpness at this point.
When she did not answer to his question, he continued speaking, ’’You don’t have to tell me for me to understand how ruthless of a person Ryle Harper is. He is like a venomous snake disguised in a harmless skin. From afar, a handsome playboy that does no harm except for woman here and there but as you get to know him more, you realize how deep his poison runs. If this was his doing...’’
’’Not necessarily,’’ Daisy cut the man off, ’’I did believe that initially but...’’
’’But are you being biased towards him now? Are you trying to defend him in your mind?"
"There might be more to what seems to the eyes,’’ Daisy looked at the back of her hand where there was a faint scar left by the dart that had grazed by her skin.
’’Oh? Is that a tactic to convince yourself? When I met you in the ball, you did not seem this partial towards him that you have to convince yourself that he is not capable of evil things. Harper is a heartless man, Daisy and I say it for your own good,’’ Lu Xian frowned, ’’Somewhere deep down, you know it as well or I believe this fall out would not have happened.’’
Fall out.
Daisy fell into contemplation.
Last night, she could not think of anything because she only considered the way things could have gone wrong with Angel.
"Don’t tell me you are justifying a man who sent his lawyers to your doorstep, threatening you with a lawsuit with the most ridiculous conditions.’’
’’There is nothing between us,’’ Daisy replied to the man calmly as she poured him a glass of water, ’’Once this lawsuit is settled, all that was there ends.’’
"If you are certain for that then I am happy for you,’’ Lu Xian looked at the woman who did not seem to have an ounce of confusion on her face. She was so unlike the women he had come across, and so like the women that he never thought he would see in his life.
’’I like the fact that you are so determined about it,’’ Lu Xian remarked after a moment of contemplation.
Daisy glanced at him. With a quirk of her brow, she responded, ’’It has nothing to do with you.’’
’’It might not have but it also might have something to do with me. That is if you have some time to consider what I am about to tell you.’’
"What is it?"
"The lawsuit.’’
’’What about the lawsuit?" she questioned him.
"I can help you settle the $50 billions. You just have to say the word.’’
Daisy looked at the man for what seemed like a long time and just when he thought she was going to turn him down, she opened her mouth to speak, ’’Very well.’’
Lu Xian’s brows rose in surprise but soon, he composed himself, ’’Are you willing?"
’’But I need you to tell me first about what you need in return for this help that you want to provide,’’ Daisy tilted her head to the side, observing the man as she tapped on the arm of the couch, ’’Tell me what is in it for you?"
The man’s lips curved up in a faint smile as he leaned back on the couch.
...
’’Hmm? And then?"
"Then she seemed pretty startled when the lawyer mentioned about the huge compensation amount,’’ Benjamin answered.
Ryle stabbed his fork in a bowl of strawberries as he brought one close to his mouth. When the faint fragrance of the chocolate dipped strawberry wafted off to his nose, he was reminded of Daisy’s little girl who was very much fond of these fruits as well, ’’What after that?" He was not surprised by knowing that Daisy was startled by the compensation amount. Let alone billions, with her current circumstances, millions were not an considerable option for her.
