Chapter 66: One room

In front a hotel in Shanghai.

’’Leave,’’ Ryle halted in his tracks and looked at his bodyguards who had been trying to follow him and Daisy discreetly yet they were so eye catching that they got stared at by people at every step.

’’But boss...’’ The bodyguards looked at each other before one of them spoke up, ’’We haven’t had the chance to check the security arrangements of this place. Dexter is not around and we don’t have anyone from the IT department. At least, we need to do a manual security check of the hotel before you can spend the day here,’’ the man said in a whisper so that Daisy would not catch it.

What he did not know was that Daisy did not even have to try to eavesdrop on their words to catch what he was saying. She was well trained in martial arts and that also gave her a keen hearing. She can trace people by their footsteps if she wanted to. She heard the old bodyguard’s voice loud and clear.

Ryle had many team of personal bodyguards but one of those teams consisted of many old members. They accompanied Ryle on distant business trips or any dangerous missions and they were extremely protective of him. Before, Daisy had found it a point of fascination why so many men would be fussing around a grown up man as if he was a princess but she did not think it was any of her business so she overlooked it all the time. The relationship between ’Dexter’ and Ryle had remained in the professional boundaries and she got to know the man as a boss, but not that much as a person until in the recent months, especially in the past week.

Now, however, she was a bit curious about it seeing how Ryle did not seem like the kind of man who needed such extreme delicate care. He did not seem like the pampered second generation heirs who took a parade of men to guard them even if they would not even be targetted by a cockroach.

’’I have my own ways. Don’t bother,’’ Ryle replied to the man.

"But Boss, it is not safe...’’

Ryle halted in his tracks, ’’Do I have to repeat myself?"

The men stood there silently while Ryle walked towards Daisy who was standing at a distance, "Let’s go,’’ Daisy nodded, shifting Angel to her other arm.

Angel was probably exhausted from the rush of party, constant travelling or maybe it was the gloomy weather. She refused to leave her side throughout the night and it was past 5 in the morning, the girl was still clinging to her silently. She was awake but she did not speak. It did not seem like she was sick but Daisy still made a mental note to visit her doctor once they landed in LA.

Daisy’s thoughts trailed off when Ryle stopped in his tracks. She looked at him questioningly.

’’Let me hold Angel for you.’’

Daisy blinked, ’’There is no need.’’

’’You are obviously tired which I don’t really care about but in your exhaustion, you are squeezing her too tight just like a...’’ Ryle paused and frowned, ’’What is that famous food of yours...?"

Daisy’s brows tugged together. What nonsense was he spouting?

’’Yes!" His eyes briefly lit up when he recalled the name, ’’You are tightly squeezing her like a dumpling.’’ ƒгeewebnovёl.com

Daisy’s lips twitched, ’’I am her mother. I know how to hold my child.’’

’’See, you did not have to be so defensive and take it to your heart, Miss Chen,’’ Ryle looked at her with a disapproving face, ’’I believe this is your first time becoming a mother. Things that you haven’t done before and don’t know how to do well, you should not be embarrassed to learn them from the people who know the trick and process.’’

Daisy’s straight face cracked ever so slightly as the ’first time’ reverberated in her mind for a few seconds. She did not know if he was explicitly referring to her first time becoming a mother or her first time...

With Angel’s presence, it was not necessarily her first time but she was foreign to the things that transpired between her and Ryle.

"Why have you turned red in such pleasant weather?" Ryle asked as he took Angel from Daisy’s arms, ’’Miss Chen, what exactly are you thinking about in broad daylight?"

Daisy snapped out of her daze as she looked at the man who shook his head at her exxageratedly, covered Angel’s eyes with two fingers and proceeded to walk inside the hotel. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

Daisy stood there frozen to her spot, jaw slack as she looked at his back. Thinking back to the trail of her thoughts, she raised her hand and touched her cheeks that had grown warm.

’’Get over it,’’ Daisy mumbled before she proceeded to follow the man.

"Welcome, sir. How may I serve you?" the receptionist smiled.

’’Two rooms.’’

’’Sure, sir,’’ the woman checked through the records as they waited but after a moment she looked at them apologetically, ’’My apologies, sir. But we just have one room available.’’

Daisy turned to leave, ’’Let’s find another place.’’

"Ma’am, it will take you almost an hour to reach the closest stay from here. Even then, you might not necessarily find a room.’’

As Daisy turned to look at the woman, she explained, ’’Because of the Spring Festival, all the hotels are crowded and even the travel have tripled compared to last year. We have a vacant room because a guest has checked out not more than an hour ago and the room is being cleaned.’’

Daisy remained silent.

’’You are welcome,’’ Ryle came to whisper near her ear.

"What?" She looked at him.

"Aren’t you thanking me mentally for having brought you with me? If it was not for my foresight, you would have struggled for flight tickets. As touched as you might be, please do not cry. I am not good with crying girls.’’

Daisy’s lips parted and then closed. Did every other person have the urge to slap him the moment he opened his mouth or was it just her?

’’We will take the room,’’ Ryle spoke up to the receptionist who smiled and pointed at a staff whi walked towards them to lead them towards the room.

’’I did not agree to that.’’

Ryle rolled his eyes, ’’You would have. After thinking, hesitating, considering pros and cons, being in denial, you would have eventually accepted it. Women tend to do that. And by then, this room would probably be gone and I would be left with no other choice than to buy this hotel which you, again, would make faces about.’’

’’You hate women?" Daisy dismissed the last part of his statement as she questioned.

’’Don’t get me wrong, Miss Chen. They are beautiful creations of gods and I have no reason to hate them.’’

’’You certainly sounded like you do.’’

’’I was just telling the truth. Women are like beautiful art. Beauty is subjective and art is complicated, is it not?"

’’And men are neither beautiful, nor an art. Objective and shallow,’’ Daisy met his gaze before she walked past him and entered the room in front of which the staff stopped.

Ryle’s lips tugged up slightly at her sassy response. The woman... was really something, wasn’t she?

Once inside the room, Ryle left the mother and daughter alone in the room to give them some space and went out to make a few phone calls.
