Chapter 64: Why can’t it be him
Just as she figured out, the man who had tried to assault Diana was not in that much of a severe condition even though he had internal injuries. He was killed off by his men because first, he dared to lay a hand on Diana and second, he was just a pawn in this whole conspiracy so he would definitely be clueless about the mastermind. As for the maid who was attacked by Diana, she was in a severe condition and the doctors informed that she would be awake in 24 hours. So, Helian Chen left his men there to monitor her activities from a distance. Once some of the information about her activities got spilled, she would be killed off in the blink of an eye for having tried to plot against his daughter.
"But..."
"No buts," Daisy cut Diana off, "These things are non-negotiable, Diana," her tone was cold.
Diana frowned but remained quiet.
Maxim patted Diana’s shoulder. Somehow, he agreed with Daisy. And being a woman of few words, she did not explain anything. But he also knew what kind of person Diana was. People dying alone would make her uncomfortable, let alone people being ruthlessly killed for her.
As a doctor, he was responsible for saving lives. After his relationship with the Qin Family came to light, he stayed away from their business dealings. But being friends with a man like Ryle, he knew how the dark side of the world worked.
"It might be anyone else tomorrow. Me, Angel, our baby, anyone from our family. You can pity them, but they won’t pity you," Maxim meant the words he uttered. Diana was the last person who would hurt anyone yet the vicious plot they devised against her showed that they were not worthy of sympathy.
"He is right," Helian Chen nodded. As he approached Diana, Maxim stepped to the side, making way for him, "I saw the news regarding the celebration of your first published book. It has been a few months and the sales are still going up," he patted Diana’s head.
Diana looked up at him, her eyes lighting up expectantly, "You sound proud."
Helian Chen paused briefly. The hesitation in her eyes was apparent when she said those words and he couldn’t help but think what kind of father he had been that his children thought he would not be happy with their achievements. frёeωebɳovel.com
Then he remembered how there had been a time in the past when Diana joined a medical school and Daisy moved out of the manor, taking odd jobs and he had told the both of them that he was disappointed in them.
"I am proud," he whispered and kissed the top of her head, "I can’t wait for you to achieve much more and make me a grandfather..."
The light in Daisy’s eyes dimmed slightly.
"...again," the man finished speaking, his gaze wandering off to the beautiful little girl who was sleeping peacefully next to Diana, with her little finger in her mouth.
Helian Chen approached Daisy, "I know I don’t have to be worried about you but I want you to prioritize your safety in anything you do. And remember that if you need something, I am just a call away."
He raised his hand to pat her hair but Daisy unconsciously retreated a few steps back.
The man paused and placed his hand down.
After Helian Chen left, Diana also sent Maxim away with the excuse ’Go talk to your friend who is lonely outside’ and it was just her and Daisy left in the room. frёewebnoѵēl.com
"Harsh treatment," Daisy remarked as she looked at the closed door with her arms crossed in front of her chest.
Diana patted the spot next to her. As the woman took a seat, she spoke up, "You don’t understand. I am doing it for his good. He has always been a worrywart but after my pregnancy, he has crossed his own limits."
They were supposed to get married a few months after their engagement only. But the man turned her down. She kept asking what made him change his mind. She even thought he was not ready for marriage yet when he refused to answer her. However, one night after they made love, Maxim was not on his guards when he asked him about it and he blurted that she would not be able to handle the heavy dress and if they designed a simple and light dress then she wouldn’t be happy with it. He dozed off after saying that. The next day when she confronted him, the man had the audacity to claim that he wanted their child to see their marriage.
Daisy burst out in a peal of laughter. The lines between her brows smoothened as she shook her head at their antics.
"Woah! Look at you."
"Huh?"
"So gorgeous when you smile," Diana winked.
Daisy rolled her eyes, "Go flirt with your man."
Diana paused and spoke up in a controversial tone, "That reminds me... who is the man that you kissed exactly?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Initially, I thought of the possibility of it being Lu Xian but now that I see you and Ryle together, I doubt it," Diana eyed the huge suit jacket that was placed on the corner of the hospital bed, "This was not a part of your outfit and you are not this big. I believe it belongs to Ryle."
Daisy did not say anything.
"So, is it him?"
"H-How can that be?" Daisy adjusted her small stutter with a cough as she continued speaking with a straight face.
"Why not? Why can’t it be him?" From the corner of her eyes, Diana noticed some movements near the door as the door opened and closed slightly. Her eyes sparkled with him.
"Have you seen him?" Daisy shrugged a shoulder.
"If Maxim did not have my heart, I would have preferred to see him more often. Beautiful men never hurt your eyes, do they?"
