Chapter 49: No legal inheritors?

When Diana heard Daisy’s response, she fell silent. Daisy’s response told her just like her Daisy had also received an invitation from their parents but she did not want to go. And unlike her, she seemed determined about her decision.

If it was a matter of a few months ago when Diana had run from home, she would say there were grudges she held against her mother, or if not grudges, she at least felt wronged for many things in her heart. Even when she discovered how many obstacles her mother had created for Maxim when they were in high school together to keep him away from her, she hated her like never before.

She thought she would never want to see the man again. But time, as they said, healed everything.

It is in the nature of the broken people to cut others, intentionally or unintentionally. But as you heal, you set yourself free from the pain of hatred and grudges. You forgive people for everything they did to you. You heal. You smile.

Diana had never thought there would ever be such a day in life. But things changed when Angel came into her life and she had to fly all the way to some other country, take a new job, and adapt to a new life just to survive. Over time, she found the man she would never tire of loving, she found people who loved her for who she was, with all her flaws, she rediscovered her passion for writing that she had long lost in the passage of time and most importantly, she found her own self, her lost voice, all her forgotten dreams and desires.

As Diana was speaking, a large palm settled on her head. She tilted her head to look at Maxim who was gently stroking her hair, his eyes evidently softening when he looked at her.

Diana looked at the man in a daze.

Diana pushed Maxim’s hand away with a slight cough.

And the man’s brows tugged together at the loss of warmth under his palm. The corner of his lips twitched, ’’Disgusted? Are you sure you are not jealous, sister-in-law?" he asked lightly.

But Daisy could feel a layer of goosebumps covering her skin at being addressed as ’sister-in-law’. ’’My aspirations certainly don’t revolve around me being stroked by any evil man,’’ she stated, much to her sister’s disbelief.

’’Did you just call Maxim evil?"

Maxim looked at Daisy with an innocent gaze, ’’Did you?"

Diana smiled widely but her smile died when she was reminded about something, ’’After mom’s treatment towards Maxim, going there with him was the last thing on my mind. But there are things that are making me reconsider it all.’’

Diana’s tone was solemn, making Daisy turn to look at her, ’’What happened?"

’’The news hasn’t spread a lot but there are reports that mom has been to the hospital twice in the last month.’’

Daisy did not even move in her place. Without a single change in her expression, she said, ’’Must be some new facade she came up with to get our father’s attention.’’

Diana frowned, "Initially, I also thought the same. I even considered the possibility that she is doing all this so that we can visit her. But...’’ she paused and as if there was some sort of telepathy between them, Maxim passed his phone to her hand.

Diana handed her phone to Daisy.

As Daisy looked at the picture displayed on the phone, she could see the distressed face of their father standing in front of the hospital, staring at the sky blankly.

"The picture doesn’t exist on the internet now and it pretty much aligns with our father’s ways of working. The moment I saw it, I considered the possibility that it would disappear in the next few days so I took a screenshot,’’ Diana placed her hands on her lap as she fiddled with them, ’’Daisy, dad doesn’t pretend. "I don’t think anything is ever going to happen to that woman. Nothing happened to her when she abused you throughout your childhood, tried to control our lives, or tried to make my child an orphan. All the times she has ever been to a hospital has been a ploy of hers and I don’t think it’s any different this time.’’

Diana opened her mouth to speak, to deny Daisy’s words and say that her heart was feeling unsettled. However, when she opened her mouth, she had no words to refute her sister’s statement because their mother had indeed done every single thing that she was accused of.

So, she lowered her head further, eyes downcast. But in the next moment, she felt a warmth on her hands. She looked at Daisy who held her hand gently.

’’But let’s go there in any case. There is no harm in it,’’ Daisy said after some consideration.

Diana’s eyes lit up.

Daisy smiled briefly, despite the turmoil in her heart.

’’The invitation is mandatory,’’ Diana declared.

The room was filled with the sound of laughter and conversation, as guests from all walks of life mingled and enjoyed each other’s company.
