Chapter 187: Innocent little lamb

’’But if you are not person that I am looking for, then I have no reasons to hold you back here. You will be free to go,’’ Seeing the fear in his eyes, he continued, ’’And I will ensure that you don’t fall back in the hands of those people.’’

The woman’s eyes welled up with tears when she heard that, ’’I..’’ her voice was hoarse and she could not utter a word properly, ’’Thank you... Thank you...’’

Ryle did not say anything but he stood up and approached the woman, ’’Give me your right hand,’’ the man said calmly.

After hearing his assurances, somehow the woman was less intimidated by him. She gulped and raised her hand towards him.

Ryle’s eyes widened when he spotted a tiny mole on her palm. When Benjamin had told him that everything he had mentioned to them matched with the woman they found, he was still in doubt. But when he saw it right in front of him, he immediately grabbed the woman’s wrist and looked up at her face, ’’What’s your name?"

The woman trembled under his gaze. She did not want to disappoint him but his urging gaze made her open her mouth, ’’I don’t remember.’’

Ryle frowned. He wanted to say something but in the end, he could not speak anymore when he saw the tears welling in her eyes.

He let go of her hand and stepped back before he pinched the spot between his brows, ’’I was too anxious.’’

’’Guards!"

Once they heard Ryle’s cold voice, several guards immediately rushed in. Benjamin also accompanied them. The one in the lead was Locke, one of the most elite guards that Ryle had under him which made him the head of the guards.

Ryle looked at the people and realized that all were men. He looked at the woman again as she was trembling and after giving it a momentary thought, he dismissed everyone apart from Locke.

Locke was a man in his 40s and also one of the most trusted subordinates of Ryle. In fact the man had been right there with Aunty Lu by Ryle’s side when Ryle’s mother died, so he had faint guess in his heart regarding Ryle’s constant searches but since the man did not mention anything to him, he stayed put in his place.

’’Arrange for maids in this mansion. Clean up the guest room.’’

Locke nodded immediately, ’’I will be on it right away.’’

’’And you are to stay here with a team of guards to protect her all the time,’’ he looked at the woman again who had gradually calmed down after the crowd dispersed.

Ryle wanted to ask her things but seeing that she did not even remember her name, he did not have much hope in his heart regarding anything else.

Locke waited for any further commands from the man but when there were none, he led the woman to the guest room and got on to fulfil the other tasks.

Amidst these turn of events, nobody noticed a trail of shadows hiding in the surrounding tall trees. There were a few discreet flashes that went unnoticed because of the sunlight and soon they disappeared.

...

’’Has it been like this for a long time?" Ivy questioned Daisy while observing a place that looked no less than a haunting house.

Daisy looked at the place and nodded, ’’It seems like that.’’

After Ryle sent the huge amount of money as an investment, she had not initially accepted it because she wanted to talk to him about it.

The money he was sending, even if she invested it blindly in this company that had been desolate for decades then he might not reap any profits at all. But after talking to him, she was certain that he did not send that money with any expectations. And what she was more certain about was that he had no intention of getting it back. So, he didn’t care about profits and losses.

And she finally agreed to him but in the end, she had her own thoughts about this matter. She would not accept such a huge amount of money and make him suffer a loss for nothing regardless of what kind of relationship they shared.

’’It will be renovated, starting today onwards...’’

The sound of approaching footsteps made Daisy trail off. She turned around and glanced at the person who was walking towards them and her brows raised slightly.

’’COO?" Secretary Han was surprised as well.

The person who had arrived at the place was none other than the COO of Chen Corporation, Caleb Astor.

’’Uncle, I heard you had some work at the company. How come you are here?" Daisy questioned the man softly.

Caleb did not notice her inquiring gaze. His eyes were shining with a faint excitement as he observed the surroundings which had been cleaned. Although the place was still in a mess but compared to the last time when every wall was covered in spider webs, it seemed neater this time. It was obvious that someone had been hired to do the cleaning.

’’I heard that you are getting this place renovated and you are not giving up on this company and it’s other branches,’’ When he spoke of that, he looked at Daisy with a questioning gaze.

But Daisy could see the anticipation in his eyes. It almost seemed like he was looking forward to her answer.

Daisy paused for a moment before she nodded, ’’Yes, I have made up my mind regarding this,’’ as she spoke, she noticed how the man’s eyes lit up when he heard her words, ’’Since we have enough funds for this, there is no further convincing or argument required for this.’’

The light in the man’s eyes dimmed a little, ’’You... About the investment... did you accept it from that Lu guy? To be honest, this is not something we should be discussing in private but the matter of the shares is already complicated. If you are accepting his money to revive this company, I hope you... you reconsider,’’ the man said even though his eyes gleamed with reluctance.

Daisy noticed his sincere concern for the company. He seemed truly concerned about it despite his obvious eagerness to revive this gaming company which seemed to have hit a dead-end. She had seen his eagerness before also, when they came for a site visit the first time around. He was able to point at a random room and tell that it was the CEO’s room without any doubt.

And that left her suspicious. She had asked Secretary Han to investigate the matter closely and find out what connection Caleb has with this company. Despite the investigation, they did not find many things. After all, it has been decades since this matter and Daisy believed that the reason behind the disappearance of these leads was probably none other than her father. He surely had a hand in closing this matter.

In the end, the only lead she found was that Caleb was hired into the company around the same time as when this company was acquired. Daisy had never had a clue about any sort of interest that her father held towards gaming industry. And she knew that even if he held any interest towards it, he would not take over a company that was on the verge of bankruptcy. Even if he acquired it, he let it be in ruins for years as if he had no idea on what to do about it. So she was more or less certain that the only reason he took over this company was Caleb.

And Caleb was none other than the previous CEO of this company.

That was her merely her assumption but she knew that it could not be wrong. She had seen the way the man had looked at the CEO’s chamber with longing and claimed that it was the CEO’s chamber even though it looked nothing less than a store room.

She could not understand what equation her father then shared with this mysterious man. If they were best friends, why did her father not help Caleb when this company was on the verge of bankruptcy? And if they were not best friends, then how did Caleb manage to climb to the position of Vice President in Chen Corporation? It would be impossible for that to happen under her father’s management if these two people really share any bad blood.

But since she could not figure it out, she put her thoughts aside and made a mental note to talk to her father about it when he contacted her.

’’Little girl, don’t tell me you really accepted Lu Xian’s investment? I am telling you that although that man seems good-looking like your Uncle but that is that. While your uncle is a dragon, that man is no less than a snake, a wriggling pest. You shouldn’t let yourself slip even if you are bewitched by his beauty.

Secretary Han stifled his laughter when he saw Daisy’s lips twitching.

Ivy, being the impulsive person she was, quickly downed a glass of water afraid that she would burst out laughing at this series of serious advises.

Daisy inhaled a deep breath but this time when she talked, her tone was unconsciously not as sharp, ’’Uncle, I didn’t accept his investment offer.’’

’’No?" ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

She shook her head.

’’Then?" Caleb suddenly recalled the funds that were transferred to her account from a mysterious source. When he saw her gaze, he understood it and immediately opened his mouth to advise her, ’’But girl, that is not safe as well. You... You are new here so you don’t understand and these old fools are all trying to conspire against an innocent little lamb like you.’’

Secretary Han: "_" Oh please! Innocent who? Little lamb who? Oh please, lord spare me from this torment!

Daisy, being a little self-aware at this rare occasion was a bit speechless too.
