Chapter 99: You Reminded Me Of Her

Skyla woke up to loud noises coming from the living room. After hearing Amsilia’s heartbreaking story and her promise that she would help her win her father’s company back, Skyla had gone to sleep.

Now she awakened with a palpitating heart and cussing. From the noises, she could decipher that Doran had finally decided to come home and Amsilia had confronted him.

"So you decided to take her outside and abuse her? Did you leave her there? You are worse than an animal. I am ashamed to call you my son,"

Amsilia’s sharp and raised voice came through the door followed by a thwacking sound.

Amsilia must have slapped him.

Silence followed a very deafening silence.

Skyla made haste. Gathering up the courage to let go of Cuddles, she climbed down the bed, put on her slippers and exited her room. Her steps hasty as she rushed along in her nightgown.

"Oh! Right, where was your motherhood when you left me to rot here when I was merely seven? Where were you at nights when I cried myself to sleep? Where were you for those torturing fourteen years?" He screamed back, fisting his hands to attain control of his wayward emotions. His cheek stung from where Amsilia had slapped him. He was succumbing to darkness, very quickly now.

"I had no choice, you and I both know why I had to leave. Don’t make this about that?" Amsilia spat out pointing an accusing finger towards her son as Skyla entered the place and stood at a side watching their showdown.

"A mother always has a choice and you chose to leave me with a woman who destroyed my sanity and turned me into a living breathing monster. You think I wanted this life? You think I enjoy hurting her? You think I wanted to remain fatherless? I blame you mother for all my misgivings and hold you equally accountable. You are a vile woman just like her, just like the rest of your pathetic kind." ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

He stared back at Amsilia with eyes dripping with revulsion as his venomous words sunk in for both women.

Doran’s chest pained and his mind was reminded of all those incidents which turned him into the man he was today.

Skyla’s hand flew to her mouth and she watched them with widened eyes of shock and restlessly beating heart.

While Amsilia seemed to have lost her ability to speak she gawked at her son in bewilderment. What had been done to him? She knew some life-altering incident happened in her absence but no one ever told her what? Doran had always shunned her after her return.

"Destroy your sanity? What did she do?"

Instead of answering his mother, his eyes darkened with such intensity of pure hatred. He turned around and found Skyla cowering in the corner. Her face and neck had healed and she watched him with mixed emotions, pity and curiosity were very much apparent. freewebnovel.cσ๓

He held her eyes for the briefest of seconds as if wanting to say something and then deciding against it.

The pity he saw in her disturbed eyes wrecked him inside, making him wonder how different their story would have been if he hadn’t turned into a sadist.

"Nothing," he barked, averting his eyes, he stormed out of there.

"Don’t walk away Doran, talk to me," Amsilia yelled in frustration, rushing after him but he was long gone.

She slumped on the ground, crying with her face covered with her hands. Skyla hastened to her mother-in-law’s side and wrapped her in her arms, in an effort to console a mother’s heart.

No one could comfort a mother’s grieving heart.

There was nothing much either of them could do.

No words were spoken, they just sat there in each other’s presence.

Skyla put Amsilia in bed and once the elderly woman had gone to sleep she finally left her room and closed the door behind her.

She slowly walked to her new room, lost in her thoughts and opened the door to enter. She laid down in bed and plastered Cuddles to her chest, thinking deeply about what she had heard.

What must have happened to him to turn him into someone like that? So many thoughts crossed her mind and yet she didn’t have a proper answer.

Hours passed and it was almost the middle of the night when the door to her room opened and soft yellow light from the corridor crept inside along with a figure. She froze in fear and clutched the teddy bear closer.

Once the initial fear had settled a bit, anger took over.

"Get out," she breathed out, her eyes holding animosity for the intruder who had been nothing but a constant reminder of how inadequate she was. A permanent tormentor, physically and emotionally.

"I just want to talk," he answered quietly, his wild eyes boring into hers.

"I don’t. Go back to the hole you crawled out of," she replied in a dismissive tone. She would be damned if she ever let him do what he had done last time. He was done hurting her. Although she was panicking inside, she kept a bold front.

He refused to listen and walked inside. Instinctively Skyla curled up against the bed frame, trying to put as much space between her and him. Her face distorted into one of hatred, the hatred she held for this man was fast erasing any other feeling she had ever felt.

"Look Skyla, I told you in the very beginning to stay away from my affairs and stop digging. Do as I say and you won’t get hurt. But you refuse to listen and..."

She didn’t let him finish and retorted.

"You got to be fucking kidding me right now. I don’t want to hear why you do what you do. You have put me through physical pain, emotional pain, you played your little games and you wrecked my life. All I wanted was a shard of your love, not your insults and definitely not your blows."

He watched her with this solemness, the woman he had broken and the woman he had wronged. The woman he had tried his damnedest to love. But that part of him was broken. He could no longer love anyone.

"I am incapable of loving anyone, Skyla. My heart is too dark, it engulfs whoever tries to come closer." He took another step closer to her bed and she hustled away. Standing over her like the handsome devil he was, Doran solemnly stared at her.

"Then why marry someone and destroy their life? People like you should stay alone."

He flinched at her cutting words.

"I guess despite my shortcomings I wanted to feel some semblance of love. Your innocence attracted me and you reminded me too much of her. I thought I could build a different life but I was wrong."

Skyla snorted at his words and shook her head.

"So you married me because I reminded of you another woman? Do you ever hear yourself?"

He took another step and half of his face became visible in the light. Pure anguish coated it.

"Not any other woman, Skyla. My father’s mistress, the woman who took away my innocence and ruined me beyond repair."
