Chapter 299: The Grand Escape
Doran had brought food for Skyla and Arica. He had kept his promise most of the time, bringing healthy food for Skyla and not hitting her.
Arica on the other hand was a different story, all that rage was vented out on her but he kept injecting her with antibiotics and pills to keep her alive.
Skyla seemed in slight discomfort today. Her expressions were of pain. Doran instantly noticed as he placed the bags of food on the table.
So without checking the camera footage, he turned to her and asked wearily.
"What’s wrong?"
"I am having cramps, I need to see a doctor," she told him in angst, clutching her belly. She was afraid she might be going into labour. It had been nine months since she had gotten pregnant.
"No doctor, you need to bear it for now. Women can give birth at home, it’s a natural process. I will call Karen, she will help you. She’s been watching videos on how to deliver a baby at home so she could assist you when the time comes," Doran flatly told her, not caring in the slightest about all the complications it could cause. She didn’t even have an ultrasound in the last three weeks to determine the position of the baby.
He didn’t care about the baby, it was the least of his concerns. He only wanted one of his own. Sooner Skyla gave birth quicker he would get rid of it and have a chance of having his.
Horror dug its claws deep into Skyla’s skin at Doran’s answer. Karen hated her guts, she would prefer killing her than helping her. And delivering a child like this with no doctor. What were the chances of survival for either of them?
"Doran, please. I am begging you. Take me to a doctor. I can’t have a baby like this. I promise to not say a word," she begged with her hands clasped. All she cared about was the well-being of her child, she didn’t care what happened to her. But her baby needed to survive, especially for Zyair. She owed this much to the man who did so much for her.
Doran ignored her pleas, taking out his phone he dialled Karen. But after ringing several times, the phone went to her voicemail. He left her a message to get back to him as soon as possible.
"Where is this woman when I need her?" Doran knew she had been avoiding him lately because of Skyla. He had made false promises to her and she was bugging him because of it, asking questions about what his real intentions were.
Arica watched them from the corner of the room, her injuries had healed a bit. Doran had given her medicine so she wouldn’t die. He wanted to keep her alive as long as he could, to prolong torturing her.
"Karen is not picking up. Hold on until she gets here," he told her, turning away as a pang of contraction passed through Skyla making her slightly hiss in pain. She watched him desperately, tears stung her eyes, and memories of Zyair whirled around her.
She knew her husband would have moved heaven and Earth in this situation. How they had planned everything and now she was stuck in a horror room about to give birth to her child without her husband. The implications unsettled her as she held her belly and tears.
Doran dumped the paper bag containing the food near her and said indifferently.
"Eat."
He then approached the monitors and began to rewind to see the footage in order to check if someone had come closer to this area. The night vision camera in the outer room with broken furniture displayed the whole room for him. Seeing the footage of half an hour back when he had entered the room made the ground almost slip from underneath his feet. He could see someone’s head poking out from behind a broken table.
Doran enlarged the image and watched closely, only to discover it was Caleb.
"Shit! Shit!" He cursed loudly and focused on the footage in the parking lot. He could see Caleb cautiously following him.
Had he been hiding?
How did he find out?
Did the guard he had been paying to keep his mouth shut finally betrayed him? ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
Doran’s hands fisted so tightly as if he wanted to punch the screen. Fast forwarding to the present he observed two cars stopping in the abandoned parking lot. Doors opened and Doran’s worst nightmare descended the car, raging in anger. His lips were set so tight that Doran could feel his wrath by just looking at him.
Behind Doran, Skyla was intently watching the screen as well, seeing Zyair alight the car almost made her scream out in happiness. If she hadn’t been bound in chains, Skyla would have jumped out of the chair in excitement that ran through her like a spark of pure joy.
Her one-winged angel was here for her and their unborn child.
There were several men with equipment to break down the door. They were getting down from another car. Zyair was talking to Caleb and he was pointing towards the location where Doran was hiding.
It was just a matter of time before they would break down the wall and door. And soon the police will arrive. Doran knew he had been discovered and it was time to use the secret passageway and escape.
Fuming like a wild boar he turned to face Skyla, who was watching him with widened eyes. As much as she was trying to hide it, he could sense the glee blossoming inside her. Her eyes were dilated and there was this spark in them which had been missing whenever she spoke to him.
"If you think I will let him take you, then think a thousand times again. You are coming with me," he barked like a mad dog who was about to lose his favourite bone.
Skyla cringed back, she was afraid he would start hitting her in this condition. Even Arica had straightened up seeing the commotion.
Stalking over to Skyla, he frisked out the keys from his pocket and began to unlock her chains.
"It’s time to use the hidden passageway. We are leaving, no way he is taking you from me. He can have her." Doran pointed with his head towards Arica. Knowing he didn’t have time to drag both women along with him. He had feared that someday he would be caught but today was not that day.
For Skyla, he could sacrifice Arica, she wasn’t going to survive much longer due to the condition she was in. She could rot now, he had his new plaything.
Skyla’s eyes wavered again and again at the monitors, her heart leaping in hope every time. Zyair was no longer visible but she could see Lawrence along with two more men trying to break down a wall. Lawrence must have arrived later.
Removing her chains, Doran let them clutter on the floor. He tightly gripped her arm and began to drag her along, barefooted.
"Come quietly," he ordered and Skyla had no option but to obey. Her free hand clutched the lower part of her belly, she was still cramping.
Opening one of the three doors the room had, using a key he began to lead her out of the room and into a dark corridor.
Doran threw one last hateful glance at Arica who was watching him with a blank expression but a slight twinkle in her eyes for she understood her freedom was near. He banged the door shut behind him.
Skyla had no clue where he was taking her but she quietly followed for now. The pain was intensifying and she had no clue how long she had.
The passageway had a rotten musty smell as if it hadn’t been used in ages. Doran had turned on the light of his cell phone so they could see ahead.
Soon they came to another door. Using a separate key Doran threw it open. The way ahead was barricaded by thin wooden panels. Doran punched them one by one, breaking them and forming a way to pass.
With extra care and great difficulty, Skyla made her way through it. Although Doran was trying to drag her she took her time.
"Hurry!" He sneered at her, seeing her take time. He jerked her forward and she almost lost her balance, her arm scraped with a part of edged wood. A sharp pain erupted in her arm which made her cry out but she steadied herself. They had emerged in a gloomy alleyway.
They turned only to discover that the entrance had been blocked by a bunch of people. Standing in front with rage consuming him was none other than Zyair.
Blood and death reigned supreme in his eyes which were for now focused on the fiend holding his wife. He wished to reduce him to ash and dust.
"Let go of my wife," his voice thundered out and hit Doran’s heart like a bolt, skewering him in his place.
