Chapter 155: Doran Sees Several Ghosts

Doran contemplated for a second. All that evidence they kept bringing against him was making him extremely anxious. What if Skyla had secretly recorded him hitting her as well?

No! That was not possible. He had to stick to his lies or he would be fully exposed.

"I have never hit her. She is lying. All I did was take care of her and her father’s company so she wouldn’t have to work and could spend her life in a relaxed manner while staying at home," he blatantly answered. The lies scalded his throat and yet he kept spewing them. His distraught eyes skipped over to Skyla.

She sat straight, not giving him any attention. Deep within his lies gnawed at her, how shameful a man could get just to hide the ugly truth he had shaped.

Sylvia turned her attention to the judge and humbly asked.

"You Honour! I would like to call upon a witness who has first-hand seen the atrocities this man has carried out on my client."

Doran’s ears perked up. What game was Skyla playing? Who was she going to call?

"Permission granted." Judge Malone said with a nod of her head. Her hair was bound behind her in a tight bun, giving her a stern look.

"I would like to call upon the witness stand, Amsilia Blackthorn. My client’s mother-in-law and the mother of the defendant."

Murmurs followed Sylvia’s announcement and Doran’s eyes almost bulged out of his sockets in shock. Skyla brightly smiled to herself, she was at least blessed to have such a woman as her mother-in-law.

Amsilia confidently walked up to the other witness stand and took her position while facing her very angered and shell-shocked son. She didn’t want to do this but she couldn’t stand injustice and his lies. Enough women had suffered in that forsaken house. She knew she owed this much to Skyla.

When Skyla and her legal team had approached her earlier to testify, she had agreed and now here she was to give her statement against her very blood and her only son.

After taking the oath. Sylvia asked her.

"Can you tell the court the events of their seventh wedding anniversary and others where Miss Skyla ended up bruised?"

Amsilia glumily nodded, avoiding glancing towards her son. She began and explained in detail what she saw and heard and the condition she found Skyla in while Doran stood over her with a bloody belt. freewёbnoνel.com

She also told of other incidents where she heard him slapping her and yelling at her and the times she had to intervene. Amsilia had tears of remorse and shame leaking down her ashen face.

She concluded with these teary words.

"Doran is my only son but I am highly ashamed of his actions against his wife. He has physically and mentally abused her for nine years," she solemnly told the court in a crestfallen voice.

Caleb gasped for air at these words. If Amsilia was saying all this, there was no doubt the allegations against Skyla were false. He questioned Doran’s sanity and their friendship. How did he not know this? Why had he been so blind as to let an innocent woman go through all this?

Doran on the other hand had his hands in tight fists while his nostrils flared, while his disturbed eyes watched his mother abandon him yet again as she did when he was just a child.

The world was cruel, they made him into a living breathing monster and now put him on trial for it.

"Thank you! Mrs Blackthorn for your time and confession," Sylvia thanked her and she left the witness stand to go sit in the public gallery along with Huria and Lawrence.

Huria sideways embraced her as both women shed tears. This was harder than Amsilia had imagined. To go against your own blood took a lot of courage and guts and Amsilia proved she was a woman of steel who stood with right.

Skyla closed her eyes and took deep breaths, trying to keep her emotions in check. She so wanted to rush to Amsilia and hug her, not many women would testify against their son in a court of law.

Doran was even more lost in the unbelievable events that had just taken place. How could his mother betray him?

Sylvia turned her attention back to the devil in the stand, he was cornered now all that was missing was a cage.

"Let’s talk about cheating now. How many women have you cheated on Skyla with? One is your secretary, Karen and then there are others as well. Women who would keep their mouths shut, right?"

Sylvia asked a very rattled-looking Doran. He was so lost now and had begun to think this was a very bad decision. The decision to bring her to court. He hadn’t assumed she would amass so much evidence against him and bring his mother to testify.

Doran had really underestimated his wife and now he was about to pay the price for it.

"I have not been cheating on her. She shouldn’t have agreed to marry me if she already knew I was a cheater as she had claimed she found me with my secretary. This is all nonsense. She has even turned my mother against me with all the lies."

Skyla scoffed and shook her head, he didn’t know when to give up, did he now?

Sylvia had dug out the places he frequented. It was not difficult because there was one sex club he was very fond of and visited often. But no one there agreed to speak to them, let alone testify. Except for a girl with red hair.

She was too afraid to talk in the beginning but persuasion and an offer of protection led her to open up and she recorded a confession on camera.

With the Judge’s permission, Sylvia played the recording in the courtroom, pausing on her face.

"Do you recognise this woman?" Sylvia pointed while keeping her loathing eyes drilled on the man she wanted to bury alive.

"Never seen her before," he answered in disgust.

"Well, let her freshen your memory."

Sylvia hit the play button as the girl began to narrate the incident of how Doran asphyxiated her while she begged him to stop. She called him a monster who didn’t seem to have any sympathy inside his dead heart. She had dealt with difficult clients with weird kinks but no one had ever driven her to the doors of death like he did. Multiple times she added. According to her the man was unhinged and should be locked up in a mental asylum for life.

More murmurs followed after this piece of evidence and any sympathy the Jury was carrying for him seemed to be disappearing. Although they kept straight faces it was evident in their eyes they were fast reaching a verdict.

After the girl’s confession, Huria was asked to take the stand. Once the oath had been taken, Sylvia asked.

"Miss Huria, can you tell us about your relationship with Miss Skyla?"

"Yes, I am her best friend. We have been friends since childhood and she is the sweetest and kindest person I know," Huria answered with a hint of a smile.

"Can you elaborate on what kind of marriage Miss Skyla and the defendant had? Being her best friend I am sure she shared details with you and you observed little things on your own."

Huria was ever ready, she hated that man’s guts.

"He was a total control freak. He wouldn’t let her complete her studies or get a job. He wouldn’t even give her money and regularly assaulted and ridiculed her."

Huria narrated, throwing him a hateful look and staring dead in the eyes. Telling him she was not afraid of him.

"Objection! Your Honour, that’s character assassination of my client," Robsan called out.

"Overruled! Continue," Judge Malone answered.

"How were you certain that it was him leaving her bruised?" Sylvia asked next, a stupid question but it was needed.

"I was the one who took most of the pictures we have shown in court as evidence. None of them are fabricated and certainly, no one can hurt their own back with a belt like that."

Huria answered in a matter-of-fact tone. Sylvia thanked her for her time and now only one witness was left to question. The very important witness. But he wasn’t here yet.

Sylvia gestured to her paralegal to contact him and ask if he had reached the courthouse so she could call him and drive the final nail in Doran’s coffin. freёwebnovel.com

They had to wait for a few minutes.

The door finally opened and Zyair walked inside, fuming from head to toe. His murderous eyes sought out Doran and he cursed under his breath. While Doran seemed to have seen a ghost, not expecting him to make an appearance.

Sylvia made her final call.

"I would like to call upon the witness stand my final witness Mr Zyair Kincaid, the CEO of Kincaid International."
