Chapter 53: 53: The Theme Starts To Play
A wise ruler ought never to keep faith when by doing so it would be against his interests.
~ Niccolò Machiavelli
___
Queen Maeve bought three cans of soda straight from the machine.
All chilled.
One Pepsi, one Coke, and one Dr Pepper.
Then she watched as two staff members took turns feeding him, one on each side.
"So refreshing! This stardom is truly harmful. It has corrupted me, once a fine young man, into what I am today!"
Hillel pushed the screenwriter aside and signaled the director that they could start the screen test.
Schneider hesitated. "B-but, although our film is more of a popcorn flick, the character setting for Wonder Man is very special. He grew up in a laboratory, without the love of parents, and everyone around him was just using him. When he discovers he has been deceived, all the repression of the past few decades turns into madness..."
"It’s just... this character is a bit perverted, you know?"
Annie tugged on Hillel’s elbow. "The director thinks you’re too upright. You need to get into character."
Get into character?
That’s easy!
Hillel grabbed Queen Maeve by the throat and pinned her against the wall. "W-wait, what are you doing?"
His expression twisted into pure insanity.
"What am I doing? Who are you to ask me that? I’m the Wonder Man, the strongest supe in existence. I can do whatever the fuck I want! Or is it that you disagree?"
"I.." Queen Maeve was stunned by the sudden turn.
But she quickly realized what was happening because Hillel wasn’t actually applying any real force.
Hillel kept his hands on her throat, perfectly mimicking Homelander’s vibe. That paranoia, that madness, that gloom...
No one understood Homelander better than he did!!
"Hey, hey, hey, that’s enough! Queen Maeve is about to pass out!"
Annie stepped in to stop him.
"Uh-ah, Missy, don’t use that tone in front of me. What’s with that face, haha, that was just a joke, come on, you came just in time!"
Hillel grabbed one with each hand and licked the corner of his mouth.
"Hillel.. don’t do anything right now, there are people.." Annie muttered, cheeks burning red.
"You do NOT tell me what to do. Seriously, you should be thanking Christ that I’m interested in you two!" freeweɓnovel.cøm
Hillel even threw in some of Homelander’s extreme energy.
Some staff members started clapping with wide eyes, "Wow, sir, that switch was amazing—"
"Do not interrupt when your betters are talking, or I’ll fucking laser each and every one of you, god dammit!" He gave them a sidelong glance, his eyes starting to glow.
The staff members froze in place.
"Haha, sorry about that, folks. That was just a joke. We are not your betters. You guys are the ones who make these movies come to life with all your hard work, making the people stuck with grief feel something."
Seeing their fear-struck face, Hillel turned towards them and flashed a reassuring smile.
"You give countless people entertainment so they can escape their harsh reality. It’s you guys who are the real heroes.."
But in a millisecond, his expression became terrifying as his eyes began to glow again and his body rose 2 inches above the ground. "Or am I wrong?"
Two staff members got so scared they turned and ran, thinking Wonder Man had broken the fourth wall and entered reality.
Even the director was terrified.
But Hillel stopped floating and came back to his usual self in an instant.
Queen Maeve and Annie immediately returned to normal.
Annie January looked excited. The Guardian’s acting skills were incredible!!
Queen Maeve’s expression was a bit strange.
Others might not be able to tell, but she knew exactly what was going on.
Hillel was imitating Homelander. The real Homelander she knew.
"Is it okay, Director? Which part of my acting do you think still needs work?!"
Hillel turned to the director, his mouth curling into a sunny and cheerful smile.
It was as if he had just killed a few people and was in a fantastic mood.
Schneider’s Adam’s apple bobbed a few times. His voice was dry. "W-well, j-just tone it down a bit, sir."
Next, the movie entered the actual filming phase.
Hillel interpreted the character of "Wonder Man" perfectly, creating many exclusive actions for him.
For example, pigeon-toed flying, terrifying micro-expressions, and pressuring teammates.
There were also iconic performances.
Including but not limited to loving to drink mother’s milk, heating milk with laser vision, and lacking motherly love, fatherly love, and friendship...
The screenwriter was numb!
The director was numb!
Queen Maeve and Starlight were both numb!!
"Is... is your boyfriend this perverted in daily life?"
Queen Maeve remembered that kiss again.
Compared to Hillel’s acting, his daily behavior was practically that of a living saint!!
"In daily life... he has quite a lot of tricks, but I’ve never seen his understanding of a role reach such a meticulous level!!"
Starlight was also at a loss for words.
She had always thought Hillel was a bit perverted.
For example, his blonde fetish, blaspheming God, and being slightly chivalrous.
But compared to the character he was playing, Hillel’s little flaws were basically nothing.
"Director, how was it? But I feel his personality isn’t brutal enough. Especially during combat, it should reflect the character’s cruelty."
Hillel also explained the Viltrumite settings to the director.
Hand-blade cutting, black hole punches, interstellar overlord...
Schneider stared at Hillel for a long while.
"If you weren’t The Guardian, I would be calling Homelander right now!!" the director said gloomily.
Huh? So greedy? One pervert isn’t enough??
Hillel had underestimated the director’s pursuit of art.
What a greedy little guy!!
...
The final scene.
Starlight, following the script, struck a pose. "Your tyranny ends here!!"
Hillel laughed softly.
"Tyranny? Hah.."
He descended slowly, looking down on everything. Every step carried the feeling of crushing the world beneath him.
"I gave them order. I let them live stable lives. I even played the role of their God!!"
"And they dare to rebel against me?"
"Kill them all!! I will... mince you all into meat paste!!"
Then Hillel instantly appeared in front of Starlight and struck down with a blade.
"Cut!!"
The director shouted cut in terror. frёeωebɳovel.com
Starlight climbed up from the ground.
"Wait, no, no!! In this movie of ours, Starlight and Queen Maeve are supposed to win in the end, right?"
"Why, as we’re filming, are Starlight and Queen Maeve dying?"
The director suddenly realized.
The screenwriter’s eyes lit up with frantic inspiration. "Film it exactly like this!! We can transform it into a dark universe, creating a contrast with the positive universe."
"Wonder Man is an inverted version of Homelander. In his world, he is the final winner!!"
The era of anti-heroes has arrived!!
The screenwriter’s brain suddenly overflowed with uncontrollable ideas. He dove into the RV to start typing away.
It left the director completely bewildered.
"Well... Director, do I need to perform it again? In that scene just now, I could slice Starlight’s VFX body in half and then kiss her upper body."
"How about it? Is it perverted enough?"
Schneider took off his headphones and shakily pulled out a cigarette.
"Good. Very good!!"
Beside them, Queen Maeve stood like a lackey.
She had already finished filming.
In the following days, Hillel had a great time on set.
He felt completely different off-screen compared to on-screen.
The director was scared enough to wet his pants at first, but later he got used to it.
Occasionally Hillel and Starlight would go wild in the RV, causing all the lights on the set to flicker constantly.
Queen Maeve stood at the door of the RV keeping watch.
Hillel had made her do it, saying he was afraid of being spied on.
Me, Queen Maeve??
Have I become a white sock hanging on the door while others do their business??
What a joke!!
Creak.
The RV door opened.
Hillel walked out looking unsatisfied.
Recently Starlight’s combat effectiveness had been dropping sharply!!
"Are you done playing master and pet with her?"
Queen Maeve looked cold.
"For now~"
Hillel curled his lips.
...
One month.
Filming wrapped successfully.
Starlight went with the crew to do publicity, leaving only Queen Maeve and Hillel behind.
"Not leaving yet?"
Queen Maeve stared at the screen. "My support rating is still sliding. Ashley is asking about the filming progress, but this show has now been changed into your debut work."
Hillel leaned over to take a look.
As a veteran of The Seven, Queen Maeve’s abilities weren’t too flashy. There was Hillel replacing her from above and the newly risen Starlight from below.
Her status had been very awkward recently.
Furthermore, the Queen Maeve persona was getting old. The public had aesthetic fatigue and there was nothing new.
"This is a good thing!!"
Hillel said. "It means you discovered the root of the problem in advance. You just need to make changes. Are you interested in coming with me for a trip?"
Queen Maeve finally raised her head and looked at Hillel.
"What do you mean?"
Hillel reached out his hand to her.
Her eyes were hesitant, and more than that, vigilant.
The last time she was taken away, it was a wild kiss.
If she was taken away again this time, wouldn’t it be wild...
"There should at least be a basic level of trust between people. Besides, have I ever urged you to repay the favor you owe me from last time?"
"Didn’t you kiss..." Queen Maeve retorted subconsciously.
"A kiss from you can be worth more than a hundred lives?? That’s very valuable!!"
"Fine. Hmph!"
Queen Maeve leaned against Hillel’s shoulder, letting him carry her away.
