Chapter 27: Fighting Together

The number of alphas who could fight in the sky was getting smaller and smaller. Most of them were either gone or so badly hurt they couldn’t get up from the deck of the blimp anymore. The Betas, soaked in sweat, found that a lot of them couldn’t call on their psychic incarnations anymore. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

Serge let the gun in his hand fall. His shoulder was so puffy and red that he couldn’t raise it. The alpha he had been helping had passed out and was now lying at his feet.

He looked at the scene happening in front of him and felt hopeless. He thought, "I did everything I could," but couldn’t help wondering, "If we were stronger, if we hadn’t lived safe in the Tower since we were kids, if we had done more training, could we have changed this scary situation? Why did we get to live in peace for so many years, even though we were born in such a scary time?"

Sweat blurred Serge’s sight. When he tried to wipe it away, all he could see was his friends who had fallen in the chaos. Only one person, Kestrel, still stood as tall as she did at the start, all alone on the battlefield, covered in blood and dust.

At the large hole in the top of the blimp, it seemed like black heads kept popping up without end. Like a black wave that kept rising and never went back, they stuck to the edge of the hole, layer after layer. All these monsters were held back by Kestrel alone. But these monsters couldn’t be thrown off or beaten, and the towering waves were going to crash at some point.

"Maybe we’ll all die. But I hope she can at least make it to the end," Serge thought with blurry eyes.

Kestrel stood stubbornly in the middle of the lonely battlefield, her clothes soaked in sweat.

The orange-yellow sky outside the blimp was filled with faces, all kinds of faces, laughing and yelling, making annoying noises. Blood was everywhere under her feet, the screams of her classmates and the soldiers never stopped hitting her ears. freewebnovёl.ƈom

Kestrel’s head hurt like it was going to break apart. A huge hole in her heart felt empty and untouched, blocked off by something.

Kestrel felt like she was back in her childhood, standing alone in that fire, surrounded by cries and screams. "Everyone will die," Kestrel thought, "Just like back then, everyone will eventually die painfully here. Even if I try my best, it’s useless."

Even if she wore herself out, in the end, she wouldn’t be able to save anyone. But that was okay; she wouldn’t feel pain, nor would she feel bad. She knew she was a freak, without any feelings. Where feelings should be in her heart, there was just emptiness, a locked-off space. Just like how her dad had locked away his senses years ago and hadn’t unlocked them until today.

Kestrel thought she would never feel sadness, but she didn’t understand why she was still standing there. She was at her limit, using her mind power recklessly, making her head hurt terribly, her tendrils so weak they were about to shrivel up. And yet, the monsters kept piling up like waves, building a terrifying wall that she couldn’t handle alone.

Collapse was coming, and keeping on was pointless.

She didn’t need to look to know that everyone around her was falling, their faces full of hopelessness and pain. She saw that some people were saying she should leave by herself.

"I’m not weak," Kestrel thought. "I belong on this battlefield. I don’t want to lose, I don’t want them to go. I just..."

A thick block of ice in her heart, locked away for many years, cracked a little. In this crucial moment, she felt a little bit of relief because it seemed like she understood what sadness meant, even if just a little.

At that moment, a wave washed over her, and the cool sea water filled her tight heart. Kestrel stopped as she heard a familiar whale sound from far away, echoing through the evening sky.

The distant sound of a whale’s song filled the sky, getting louder as it got closer. Everyone on the blimp could hear it.

From far away in the sky, a huge fish was coming. Its back was black, fins standing straight up, decorated with pretty white patches. As it got closer, they saw it wasn’t a fish at all, but a orca, a huge orca. The giant creature, like a storm, tore through the thick crowd of mutants, sweeping them away with a strong whip of its tail. The force was like a hurricane, really harsh, even hitting the ropes of the blimp.

The whole blimp rocked back and forth violently from the gust of wind caused by the whale’s tail. Those who were still alive held onto anything they could to keep from being thrown around, grabbing onto their unconscious friends. As everything around them turned into chaos, they could only look up as the giant, shadowy belly of the orca swam overhead.

This orca was so big, like a battle-ready warship, giving off a powerful feeling of dominance.

"It’s an alpha, a top alpha’s psychic incarnation."

"Wow, look at how big it is! How high is this alpha’s rank?"

"It’s the rescue team! The rescue team is here!" The people on the blimp who were still alive almost cheered. They could hardly believe that the Tower had sent help so quickly.

But, it looked like only one rescuer had come.

On the jet-black back of the Orca, was a tall and sharp dorsal fin. In front of it, stood a lone alpha, holding a rifle, a short blade hanging at his side. His feet were planted firmly on the smooth whale’s back, not moving even as they sped through the sky, standing as steady as a rock.

He looked down, his eyes icy cold and not very friendly. The orange sunlight lit up his serious eyebrows but didn’t warm up his cold face.
