Chapter 26: The Scarlett Sky (2)
At the edge of the gaping hole in the ceiling, the face of a mutant appeared. It was a boy, about six or seven, plump with rosy cheeks and peculiarly wide front teeth.
The alpha fired first, striking the boy-like figure’s head, who rolled down the inner wall of the blimp, crying out.
The powerful kickback from the gunshot unexpectedly jolted Serge’s shoulder.
It hurt so much. The force was tremendous. He gritted his teeth, steadying himself.
The monster’s head dodged the first bullet and accelerated. Halfway through, it suddenly slowed down. The tear-streaked face began to giggle, displaying a dreamy, silly expression.
The alpha’s second bullet followed swiftly, blowing it apart.
Another head appeared at the edge, then two more, then a third. Those horrifyingly agile monsters seemed to become confused and slow the moment they revealed their faces. For the alpha, who had excellent vision and strong physical strength, it was like shooting at stationary targets.
The alpha took down the monsters with two or three shots each, dealing with them decisively and effectively. The previously bothersome monsters, which had been darting about everywhere, were now as easy to kill as chopping vegetables. She turned her surprised gaze to the girl standing beside her. The girl, clad in a deep blue coat, stood in the swirling dust, her sleeves rolled up to her wrists. She held a small submachine gun, bare-handed, as she looked up at the sky. Under her feet, amidst the dust, it seemed as though countless mysterious things were writhing and swirling.
One after another, creepy heads popped up from the edge of the hole. Their faces looked strange, pushing against each other, drooling as they stared at the humans inside the room. But, no matter their size, big or small, there was always a moment when their movements froze for no clear reason. freēwēbnovel.com
The alpha could faintly see squirming tendrils suddenly popping out of the shadows. These quick-moving things invaded the monsters’ brains in a flash. The wild creatures would have a moment of emotional confusion at some point, and the alpha took advantage of these moments to quickly take them out.
The two of them worked together perfectly, one weaken the enemies, the other making the kills. Even with a never-ending wave of monsters, none could get through the giant hole.
"So this is a beta? So this is what a real beta is like," The alpha thought. It was her first time working with a beta. With her skills and fighting abilities, she would never be able to take on so many mutants by herself. It was the beta standing next to her, using her strong psychic control, who ruled the battlefield and hugely increased her fighting power.
The alpha had never had such an exciting fight. Even as she was running low on bullets and her body was almost worn out, her psychic landscape stayed calm. There were barely any bad feelings from physical pain and using too much psychic power. This stable mental state let her hang in there, to give it her all, and to fight without holding anything back.
And the male beta with a pure white Chinchilla cat as his psychic incarnation held up. He used the cat’s gentle and soft psychic power to groom and get rid of all the painful negative feelings in her psychic landscape.
"So this is what a beta is. No wonder the Empire values them so much. But such betas shouldn’t just be mates for alphas at home. They should be on the battlefield, becoming the best partners and teammates for the alphas," for a moment, the alpha had a thought that someone of her rank shouldn’t have. "What a shame, I might not be able to protect such a good beta."
Soon, she ran out of ammo, and her body hit its limit, but the monsters kept coming.
They were just regular blimp guards, not used to the Polluted Zone. Suddenly thrown into this strange, uncharted new Polluted Zone, it was hard to find a way out.
alphas fighting the mutants in mid-air were all covered in blood. Some of them fell thousands of feet from the sky, their bodies drenched in blood. Also, some badly hurt alphas struggled to fall back into the blimp.
The first alpha to fall had broken legs and was covered in blood. He rolled on the ground, propped himself up, gritted his teeth to pick up his dropped gun, and dragged his body, leaving two long blood trails behind.
"Give me my gun, I can still fight. Damn it, those mutants, those monsters killed the captain." His eyes were red, and black feathers flickered on his face, a sign of mutation.
With a hesitant stride, Nicole approached the blood-covered man. Her hand trembled as she reached out to touch his skin, cupping his face tenderly in her hands.
"Can I do this? Me, a failure like me?" Nicole thought to herself. "My psychic grooming scores are mediocre. I may not be able to pull this off." In that moment, she regretted her past carefree days at the academy. She should have focused more on improving her grooming skills.
In her palm, the face covered with black feathers startled her with a ferocious roar. His eyes were slit pupils that eventually faded from black to a human appearance. The alpha momentarily regained his senses.
He paused for a moment, glancing at his severed legs and his body in flux, then handed the gun he had been clutching to Nicole. "Can...can you use a gun?" His voice was light and gentle, almost pleading.
"Point it here, and pull the trigger." His bloodied hand weakly gestured towards his head.
"Please, I don’t want to turn into a mutant in the end."
In that instant, Nicole’s psychic incarnation appeared. It was a silver-patterned python. The large snake slithered on the ground, weaving around the two.
"It’s okay, you will be fine, I am a beta. A powerful beta. Please calm down and work with me." Despite her youthful appearance and her wild hair, Nicole’s voice was soft and calming, her hand holding the alpha’s felt warm and comforting. The silver snake moved around, its beautiful scales reflecting colorful light, creating a barrier against the chaotic surroundings.
The alpha stared blankly at her, and his fluctuating face gradually stabilized.
"Yes, that’s great. Just like that. I will start psychic grooming for you right away," Nicole said.
In her school days, she always considered herself unique. Rebellious, wild, extremely cool. At this moment, she realized how childish her past self-centered behaviors were.
"Now, this is the real cool me." The affluent young lady, usually pampered, closed her eyes and placed her hands over the alpha’s eyes.
One by one, others stepped forward. They rolled up the alpha’s trouser legs to stem his bleeding, tending to his wounds. The sight of the bitten-off severed legs brought tears to several betas’ eyes. frёewebηovel.cѳm
The alphas in the sky were fighting hard to protect the unstable blimp. Inside, the betas were doing their utmost to treat the wounded who were brought down one by one.
Everyone was doing their best, but the monsters seemed endless.
The sky was a vibrant orange-yellow, reminiscent of an oil painting. The small blimp seemed lost in it, shakily sailing through the boundless canvas, desperately seeking an escape.
In the distant sky, a phantom city floated. It was a city from the past, with closely packed skyscrapers akin to towers, lit up with countless twinkling lights. Neon signs strung across the city, elevated highways bustling with traffic. This phantom city, like a dream from a forgotten past, loomed ominously in the distant sky.
A gang of scary, almost-human monsters erupted from the bright, ghostly city, looking like a bunch of black storm clouds. In this strange and huge world, the non-stop and endless wave of monsters made finding the hidden portal to escape seem almost impossible.
