Chapter 174: Adaptation
Mika’s eyes stung again.
"What’s happening with me...?" he muttered in front of the mirror.
It was the first time that Mika noticed a change in his body. Previously, there were occasions, where Mika felt like another person. However, he did not take notice of that at those times. It was Belian instead, who did not only saw the change in his appearance but also in the personality.
[The process has reached 60%. It was about time for you to notice the first changes in your body.]
"Process... What the heck are you talking about...?!" Mika asked with ragged breathing.
[You have received four out of six installments already. What you are experiencing right now is your body adapting to them slowly.]
The first installment was when Mika received Excalibur. The second was the Holy Spear, which he got during the fight against Zantar. The third was the ability to use light, which he learned against Yater. And the fourth and latest installment was the Time Manipulation, which he used for the first time at the time of the invasion.
Mika took deep breaths as he faced the cabin’s roof with closed eyes.
"What will happen once my body gets fully accustomed to them?"
"Or rather, will I still be myself?" he corrected himself.
It may have been only for a short moment but before he launched his attack at Sara, he noticed that he was completely calm and that he did not hesitate to attack. Usually, he would have stopped right there or opted for a different approach in order to minimize the damage.
"..."
Mika put his palm on his face.
"Now that I think about it..."
He finally remembered how he acted towards Olivia during the fight against Zaran.
If he recalled correctly, Mika was acting arrogantly and coldly towards her, feeling even a hint of disgust towards her, which he, however, could not explain yet.
"Mika, are you alright?" Lily, who knocked on the cabin’s door, asked out of concern.
"Y-yes. I will come out soon." Mika replied.
He stared in the mirror once more and saw that his eyes finally returned to their normal appearance.
Mika heaved a sigh before he went outside.
In the end, the system did not even utter a single word to Mika, who was left in the dark about his condition.
When he joined the others, he noticed how Sara and Belian talked about the battle and exchanged some tips.
"One second too late and this could have ended badly for all of you." Ophelia remarked tiredly.
She stood next to Mika.
"I guess we went overboard a little..." Mika apologized with an awkward smile.
Then, the others from the white class approached Mika. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
"M-Mika..."
Sylvia, who was slightly taken aback like the others, was the first one to open her mouth.
"Yes?"
"Since when were you able to use such high-ranking magic...?" she asked.
Mika’s magic attack against Sara was on the same level as an A-rank mage.
"Well..."
He scratched the back of his head embarrassedly.
"I just ranked up I guess." he said with a small chuckle.
They widened their eyes in disbelief.
Mika started out as an E-rank lightning mage and just recently it was rumored that he was a D-rank mage. And because he explained to most of them what his powers were, including the restrictions, which were responsible for making him appear like a D-rank even though he was most likely a B-rank mage.
But what they did not know was that Mika was able to free himself from the restrictions and even ranked up a short while ago. After all, due to Louis Hayth, Ren Bugar and Zhen Bugar admitting their loss against Mika during the side quest, he managed to collect all rewards.
His affinity for light and lightning each was bumped up to an A-rank and the third and last reward, which he could only achieve after beating all of them, was the nullification of the magic restriction of Mika.
Now, there was nothing holding him back physically and magically aside from the minute restriction for his heavenly relics. But even without them, Mika was now officially on the same level as a top student in the red class.
"You’re unbelievable..." Sylvia said, shaking her head with a wry smile.
He possessed four out of six installments involving heavenly relics. His magic was approaching its peak. And his body was tougher and stronger than the average.
It would not take long until the adaptation would be complete.
"Hey, Mika! That was a fun battle! Let’s do it again tomorrow!" Sara suggested innocently.
"Are you out of your mind, Sara?" Yarjak remarked.
The group was reviewing the battle until dinner. freeweɓnøvel.com
And while most of them went into their cabins, preparing to sleep, Mika was still on the deck, gazing at the vast and dark sea.
"Eerily calm, right?" Sylvia, who walked over to his side, commented.
"Yeah..." Mika replied apathetically.
It was during the nights when Mika finally realized how scary the sea can be.
There was nothing wherever you looked at besides water. If something would happen to them, no one could help them. If the ship were to be damaged or destroyed, then there would be nothing for them to stand on. And furthermore, there were monsters lurking deep in the sea, who had a clear advantage if they were to fight underwater.
And the tales about the great sea monster did not make things brighter.
"Can’t sleep?" Mika asked.
"Not really. The others are still chatting. I just wanted to get some fresh air. What about you?"
"I suppose I also just wanted to get some air." he responded with a slight smile.
"I see."
The two leaned their forearms on the rails as they stared together at the sea.
"..."
From time to time, Sylvia glanced inconspicuously at Mika, who seemed to not take notice of that.
"Can I ask you something...?" Sylvia said, appearing shy.
"Sure."
It felt like she was hesitating to ask him.
"This may be a little random but..."
She was starting to become all fidgety, constantly averting her gaze from Mika.
"Hm? What’s the matter? It’s unlike you to beat around the bush so much."
"W-well..."
She finally looked him intensely in the eyes.
Small drops of sweat began to form on her forehead.
"T-to make things clear, this isn’t about me, okay...?!"
"O-okay..."
Mika was slightly taken aback by her.
Meanwhile, she took a deep breath.
"I-if your family and your friends were fighting against each other, whose side would you take...?" she asked shyly.
"Huh?"
He tilted his head and looked at her confused.
"P-please just answer..."
It was such an absurd and random question that Mika did not even know how to respond at first. However, when he looked at the nervous Sylvia, he tried his best to answer her.
"Hmmm... To be fair, I can’t really imagine my family and friends fighting each other but if that would be the case then..."
Mika stopped midway as he was still pondering.
"I think I would try to calm both sides down? I would try to understand their problems and solve them."
"Heh..." Sylvia chuckled softly.
"W-what?"
"It sounds really easy, doesn’t it?" she said with a melancholic smile.
"But what if it was not possible to fix the problem? What if a fight was inevitable?" she added softly.
"Jeez, what kind of questions are those?" Mika wondered, scratching his head.
"But I would most likely not fixate myself on one of those sides."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Well, if they’re fighting because of different opinions or values then I’d just stand on my own beliefs. I would fight for the things I believe in, even if I have to oppose my friends or family."
"But that’s an unrealistic scenario for me." Mika added, waving his hand in denial.
"..."
Sylvia stared at him with a surprised expression.
"Are you satisfied now?" Mika asked embarrassedly.
She turned her back on him and was about to head back to her cabin.
"I don’t know about that." she replied, smiling softly, which Mika was not able to see.
"Tch, this damn girl." he muttered, also smiling.
And again, Mika was left in the dark.
[You have completed the quest successfully. Distributing the following reward.]
[You can now copy anything you want.]
[However, this can be only used once.]
[Do you have anything in mind already?]
"..."
Mika was in deep thought.
In the beginning, he was interested in Sara’s swordsmanship. However, he thought that it would be disrespectful towards her as he would have copied something she worked on hard for so long. So instead of ruthlessly copying her skills, he opted for learning them normally.
"Not really. I will use this someday in the future, I guess."
[Understood.]
"Anyways, about our conversation today..."
The system did not say anything.
"Are you really ignoring me?"
Mika was silent for 5 minutes but the system also did not say anything in that duration.
"Tch."
Annoyed, Mika went to bed.
