Chapter 139: Curses
After the conference.
Everyone left the big tent without uttering a sound.
They either had an indifferent expression on their face or were contemplating.
Mika exited the tent apathetically, leaving most of his friends behind as they were one of those, who had a lot to think about.
"This may be the wrong time to chat with them." Mika muttered.
It was definitely not the time for a joyous reunion even though they survived a hard battle.
"..."
He decided to stroll around the shelter for a little while before going to sleep.
It left a bitter taste in his mouth, seeing the people taking shelter here as the scent of despair, anxiety and sadness was lingering strongly in the air.
Mika heard the people’s broken voices.
And yet, he could do nothing to help them now.
He neither had the resources nor the strength to help. Not even words filled with hope and optimism would sway them.
Thus, he kept moving forward while forcefully shutting his eyes in frustration.
"M-Mika!"
"?"
Suddenly, a familiar voice was calling him out.
He turned around and saw a panicked Harik and a nervous-looking Rachel.
"Harik? Rachel? What’s wrong?"
Harik suspiciously shifted his gaze to the sides.
"Can we talk for a moment...?" he asked.
"Sure..." Mika replied, tilting his head in confusion.
Reaching a silent agreement, the three headed somewhere, where no people were seen or could hear them.
"So? What did you want to talk about? And why do you look so nervous?" Mika asked.
Harik took a deep breath.
"I know that you’re tired so I will come straight to the point."
He took off his sunglasses.
"..."
Mika’s eyes sharpened.
Instead of blue eyes, which should have indicated his affinity for water magic, black pupils resided in his eyes.
The same black eyes as demons.
However, Mika was not surprised. After all, he noticed those eyes back when the three of them fought against the B-rank demon Clara.
In the midst of the battle, Harik’s sunglasses shattered, revealing his eyes, which he tried so hard to hide from everyone.
[I do not sense a demonic aura from that boy.]
"Neither do I." Mika muttered sternly.
Harik hesitated somewhat to speak.
It was visible that he was uncomfortable.
"..."
Meanwhile, Rachel averted her gaze in pity and fidgeted nervously with her fingers.
"Those eyes of mine..."
Harik began to talk.
"A few years ago, they were normal."
His tone was sentimental.
"However, when I met that person, my life changed completely."
Harik balled his fist up.
His voice was cracking as his wrath towards that person awakened.
"Using me like some kind of rat to experiment with, he cursed me...!"
Mika only listened, having an indifferent gaze.
"I was wandering on the streets alone on that day and due to the fact that I was still growing and was therefore still weak, I was at that person’s mercy. No one was there to help me nor did I could even help myself."
Harik’s eyes were void of any emotions.
"Then, that demon placed a curse on me. A curse which made my eyes look like those of a demon."
"..."
Mika shifted his focus to Rachel for a moment.
[You have the same thought as I, huh?]
Then, Mika heaved a sigh.
"I see. I think I see the picture now."
He scratched the back of his head while he closed the distance between him and Harik.
"Rachel, did you know about that?" Mika asked.
"O-only since today... He told me after you defeated that demon."
"But you surely came to the same conclusion, right?"
Rachel nodded her head once.
"This must be the work of the same demon who was also responsible for my condition." she responded.
"..."
Harik looked at Rachel saddened.
It seemed like the two exchanged their information between them after Mika left them.
"A demon who puts curses on others..."
Mika pondered.
"Do you know anything?" he whispered.
[I can only tell you that said demon is at least an A-rank demon.]
"It sounds like you know more about the demon."
[That is solely your imagination.]
"Mika?" Rachel called him out.
"Sorry, it’s nothing."
Mika turned his attention to Harik again.
"First of all, thank you for entrusting me with your secret." he added with a gentle smile.
"No, I thank you for not judging me after you saw those eyes for the first time." Harik replied politely.
Since he was cursed, Harik was discriminated and hunted by his peers for having demonic eyes. He had to flee from his home and lost those, whom he once called his friends and family.
At some point in time, he even developed a social fear, making him scared of getting outside or having contact with strangers.
Then, he coincidentally stumbled upon the sight of sunglasses one day. Obviously, he instantly purchased one, trying to gauge their effectiveness to hide his eyes.
Thus, he was never seen without sunglasses again since that day.
Regaining his confidence to go outside again, he decided to enroll in Loogam and to get stronger in order to take his revenge against the very demon, who turned his life upside-down.
However, his desire for revenge was about to calm down now.
After all, Mika was the one to solve that problem.
"I’m sorry for this speculation but could it be that you’re the one who cured Rachel?" Harik asked respectfully.
"So you didn’t tell him yet?" Mika directed the question at Rachel.
Rachel, in turn, shook her head sideways.
"I see..." Mika said, sighing.
"M-Mika!"
"W-what?"
Mika flinched when Harik suddenly raised his voice.
"I beg of you... May I ask you to cure me, too?"
He bowed his upper body so much that his face was looking at the soil.
"..."
At first, Mika was taken aback by Harik’s gesture but it did not take long for him to understand his feelings.
From Mika’s point of view, this seemed like a trivial action since he was in possession of the cure. But for Harik it meant everything.
There was no way for Mika to know what kind of hardships Harik had to go through nor did he want to know. The same applied to Rachel, whom he already cured.
"..."
Without saying a word, Mika, who had a stern gaze, drew Excalibur.
His appearance started to change, too, like always.
[2 seconds left.]
Harik noticed the change in the atmosphere but he did not dare to lift his head.
He heard the sound of a blade getting raised in the air.
Was it maybe too much to ask for? Was Mika perhaps angry? Or was Harik too impatient?
Those thoughts crossed Harik’s mind before Mika swung the sword down.
"And done."
"H-huh...?"
Harik slowly lifted his head after Mika lightly tapped Harik’s head with the dull side of Excalibur.
[0 seconds left.]
Mika changed back but his teeth-flashing smile remained.
"Woah..." Rachel gasped as her eyes also widened.
Then, Mika looked around. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
"Go and look at a mirror." he suggested gently.
"..."
Harik did not take a look at himself yet but he had the feeling that he was finally freed from his curse. Something made him think that everything was fine again.
"..."
With tears rolling down his cheeks, Harik silently rushed to find a mirror.
"My job’s done now. You should go, too, and get some rest. The days from now on will surely be exhausting." Mika stated as he turned his back on Rachel.
"Hm." Rachel agreed, nodding her head.
She watched as Mika vanished in the distance.
"..."
Rachel clenched her chest tightly.
Her eyes wer wide, her mouth agape and her cheeks red.
She replayed the night when Mika cured her in her mind.
It was right after Lisa and Sylvia left the dorm for the opening ball.
"..."
Rachel looked outside the window when she heard voices from outside.
"Was it really necessary to knock him out?!"
"I’m sorry, too, okay?! But there’s no way that I could appear at the ball looking like that!"
Rachel opened the window.
"What are you doing here?" she asked apathetically.
Lisa and Mika turned their heads to Rachel.
"We’re here to pick you up." Mika stated with a smile and a thumbs-up.
"Jeez..." Lisa shook her head at Mika’s words.
"Pick me u- H-hey!"
"Sorry but time is running." Mika apologized after he suddenly jumped inside Rachel’s room.
"Excuse me." Lisa said politely, following suit.
"..."
Rachel watched the two baffled.
Lisa was rummaging through Rachel’s clothes while looking dressed up.
"Wha- Why did you draw your sword?! A-and what happened to your hair and-"
Mika bonked her softly with Excalibur.
"H-huh?"
His appearance turned normal again.
"We will wait outside for you." he said as he jumped out of the window.
"It seems like you already had a dress in mind. It would be a waste to not show it off, wouldn’t it?" Lisa said while sending Rachel a wink.
She, too, jumped out of the window.
"..."
"J-just what happened...?"
It felt like only five seconds had passed.
But in reality, it would take her only five seconds afterwards to notice the change in her body.
The rest was history.
Back to the present.
"Truly... I cannot thank you enough, Mika." Rachel murmured gratefully.
However, Mika was not seen anymore.
[You have completed the quest.]
