Chapter 43: Intoxicated
Axel
I smelt it too. Enough to render my throat dry and my heart thumping violently in my chest. Glancing at Thor, I realized I wasn’t the only one affected. Watching Rex dart forward and pull her inside made something inside me snap, the urge to dash forward and break into the building overwhelming, to drag her out and away from him before I did something far worse.
"What is that smell?" I groaned under my breath at Thor as we moved closer to the door and stood right in front of it.
We glanced back to see men who were no longer worried about the attack. Instead, there was lust in their eyes as they stared at the door, completely overtaken by whatever was filling the air.
Some of them even stepped closer, making it clear they would have gone in if we were not standing there blocking them.
"Leave!" Thor commanded, and they turned around with visible difficulty. They didn’t want to.
The whole experience was surreal and unsettling as we stood there watching Gessia move closer at that moment with a worried look on her face, sweat dripping down her skin in a way that made it clear she had also been running for her life.
"She’s probably in heat!" she said out of breath as she sniffed the air, but with the confused expression on her face, it was clear she could not perceive anything at all.
Still, she continued to sniff even as I took a step back. The urge to head inside was getting stronger, and doing so would only result in Rex, who was already inside, sinking his teeth into me. There was no way he would let go, especially since we were sure he was closer to his knot period as discussed.
"It’s a good thing," Gessia continued, "he’ll knot inside of her and she’ll get pregnant," she said with a smile that in no way reached her eyes. It was clear she was interested in Rex far beyond the physical, regardless of how much she tried to hide it.
"The first baby would be the testing ground. It would be messy, but I’m sure we’ll be—" she began to say only to stop abruptly, covering her mouth as I glared at her and Thor did the same.
Most people had scattered by then, but there were still a few who instead of attending to their families were staring at us, and more specifically at the fact that we stood in front of her door after Rex had pulled her in. frёewebηovel.cѳm
The sounds of their mating were loud enough for everyone to hear, especially since the sleeping quarters were not padded enough to prevent people from hearing the messy and unrestrained sounds coming from within. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
With one hand I gestured for a guard, who immediately moved closer and stood where we had been positioned.
"Watch the door!" I ordered before turning around to leave, gesturing for Thor to follow me as Gessia did the same.
Moreover, I needed to speak to Thor about what he had found out from the humans he had chased, but we had barely reached the alpha building when Gessia began speaking as soon as we entered, closing the door behind us to ensure no one heard, including the guards.
"Us getting attacked by rogues? What happened to the guards and scouts?" she asked, worry palpable in her tone as she spoke, especially since we had promised her safety from those who were looking for her in exchange for her staying.
"Will this happen again?" she asked us again, fear visible in her eyes, which almost seemed fake considering we had seen her use a bit of wind magic earlier, enough to tell us she was not as weak as she pretended to be.
It was even more suspicious since what we knew was that witches mostly dealt with potions.
I kept quiet with no answer until I had spoken to the council, but Thor instantly began speaking with a worried tone as he relayed what he had found from the humans he encountered.
"They are paying more attention to us, so maybe they are also hunting rogues, which caused them to change direction and seek a safer path," he said, and the frown on my face deepened at what I was hearing.
"Why would werewolves catch human women and pregnant ones to boot?" I asked as Thor added with a too-serious expression for my liking.
"They don’t even taste nice," he whispered, but loud enough that I had no problem hearing him.
I glared at him as he simply shrugged his shoulders. I believed we weren’t savages enough to hunt humans for food, but Thor clearly didn’t care.
"We’re all animals," he would say, always followed by a shrug.
"For food?" Gessia sighed. "I guess we’ll never know..."
But the way she said it, and the way she tried to shift the topic, made me pause as I settled by the main hall and the huge table we used for gatherings, staring directly at her as I spoke. More aware than ever that she already knew the answers.
"Moonburn pack is using the same method, but they’re using humans? You never mentioned that such a method was possible?" I snapped at her, baring my teeth in anger. I never trusted her, but I didn’t think she would lie to us.
Compared to using one woman, we could have used dozens already. If we were to catch up to the Moonburn pack and win in an attack against them, then we needed to become stronger, faster.
That wasn’t going to happen if our growth was slower.
Anger burned in my eyes as I focused my gaze on her.
"Explain yourself!" I snapped, my voice booming across the room, surprised when she didn’t even flinch as she stared back at me calmly.
It only infuriated me even more as I stepped forward, only for Thor to step between us with a roll of his eyes that made it clear he was already getting annoyed.
