Chapter 149: The Surprising Nurse Elise II
Elise scoffed. "You’ll regret your words today, Harper. Turning your back on your real family will never end well. Your mother proved it with her death. I had hoped you might be smarter, but I guessed the apple never falls far from the tree. What a pity!"
I snarled, wanting nothing more than to throw myself at Elise, to slam her smug little face against the ground to demand a proper explanation, but once again, Damon’s broad back blocked her from my view.
"Harper, stop wasting time. Get inside the car!" Damon ordered, using his authority as my alpha to demand my obedience, leaving me no choice but to follow his instructions.
I hissed with anger, but I couldn’t fight a direct order, no matter how much I wanted to wring Elise for more information.
With one final glance, I wordlessly pleaded for Damon to be careful before I ran towards the car and locked myself inside it, staring at Damon and Elise with bated breath. Damon didn’t even wait for me to get into the car completely before he transformed right in front of my eyes, the loud snapping sounds of his bones cracking sounding more like firecrackers and gunshots when paired with the old concrete walls of Everhaven. freewebnoveℓ.com
My eyes widened in shock. Damon was going to reveal the existence of werewolves to anyone who had a pair of working eyes! There was no way anyone could mistake him for an ordinary, run-out-of-the-mill wolf when he was almost the size of our car.
I hoped the townspeople were all kept busy at their jobs to peer out into the street. Then, Damon unhinged his jaw and let out an enraged howl reverberated against the car windows, causing them to shiver.
I could hear him loud and clear, and I knew that there was no way anyone would miss Damon’s presence in town. Every townsperson must have heard him. But Damon clearly didn’t care about keeping his identity — nor his status as a werewolf — a secret anymore.
Damon, and Fangborne by association, would have a lot of trouble explaining their existence to normal people.
My heart began to race with fear, not for Damon’s life in his fight against Elise, but for what might happen after― Damon’s howl was basically a homing beacon for any werewolf hunter and vampire.
Even if he managed to get rid of Elise, she might have backup already on the way! I had no idea how many vampires had infiltrated Everhaven, nor did I know the number of hunters masquerading as common townspeople.
Who would have ever thought the shy helpful nurse working the reception desk at the hospital would actually be a hunter, wielding a silver knife with a wickedly sharp edge, a cruel glint in her eye as she scoured for any opening to lodge her weapon in Damon’s body?
Certainly not me. I quickly slid into the driver’s seat, trying to recall how Damon worked the controls. Ignition, accelerator, brake, the gears, and the steering wheel. I sucked in a breath.
If things got dire, I would drive the car straight into the thick of the conflict to pick Damon up. My hand shakily turned on the engine, and I watched Damon fight. He tore straight for Elise, trying to bite off her head. Meanwhile, Elise ducked and rolled, trying to plunge her dagger into his exposed flank, hurling all sorts of vulgarities at Damon when her countless attempts were met with failure.
"Alpha Damon, do you know who your mate truly is?" Elise yelled out, her eyes darting to me nestled in the relative safety of the car. "You don’t want to risk giving your heart to the wrong woman!"
Who... I truly was? I gulped, not relishing the meaning behind her words. Was I not Damon’s mate? No, impossible. Or was it? No one had ever heard of someone having two fated mates. Or did her words have something to do with my mother instead? My mother couldn’t have been a hunter, right? freēwēbηovel.c૦m
Perhaps she was simply born into a family of werewolf hunters. Perhaps she was adopted. Perhaps Elise was simply lying to cause me to doubt my entire life and turn Damon and I against each other. There was no way to know, but I knew one thing: Damon would never forsake me.
I watched Damon’s wolf form nod as if he was responding to my thoughts. Damon couldn’t respond to Elise’s taunts and insults since he wasn’t in his human form, but I could sense his thoughts loud and clear. It was as though I could hear his voice murmuring into my ear.
’The Moon Goddess never makes mistakes.’
Such steadfast belief in us soothed the raging storm in my heart.
I was Damon’s and Blaise’s fated mate. This was what the Moon Goddess decreed, and no one, least of all a hunter who claimed to be related to me, should question it.
"Fangborne will collapse under your hands!" Elise crowed, refusing to shut up.
A manic gleam entered her eye while she swung her knife at Damon, trying to find a way to mount him and ride him, so she could plunge her knife into the deep of his spine, paralyzing him immediately.
I could only applaud her gall, knowing that she had signed her death warrant. Damon wasn’t going to let any other woman ride him, whether it was for pleasure or for murder. His teeth dug straight through her foot as he bit down with all the strength in his jaw. Elise was merely wearing leather boots, and while they were good at protecting her feet from most perils, they were utterly useless when faced with the strength of Damon’s jaw.
There was a sickening crunch that seemed to echo through the air, as Damon’s teeth crunched through bone as though it was nothing harder than a biscuit at tea time. Elise let out a pained wheeze, and I could briefly make out the look of shock on her face.
