Chapter 51: Chapter 29: Watching a Movie, Shen Yanzhi Waits Late at Night

’Go back to Shen Yanzhi!’

She didn’t need to think twice to know what would be waiting for her if she went back to Shen Yanzhi.

She hadn’t rested at all in the past two days, and her back was killing her.

Jiang Li pulled Zhong Mufeng straight onto the bed. "No way. It’s not every day you come to visit, so of course I have to keep you company!"

Zhong Mufeng looked completely opposed. "I’m not a three-year-old. I don’t need you to keep me company. Hurry up and get back to your Shen."

The main reason was that she was afraid of facing another one of Jiang Li’s lectures about marriage and relationships.

It was true—once people got a little older, they really started getting hung up on all this traditional nonsense.

Seeing Zhong Mufeng repeatedly refuse her company, Jiang Li didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "What, are you afraid I’m going to keep nagging you to get married?"

Before Zhong Mufeng could reply, Jiang Li answered her own question. "Actually, I just got a bit carried away earlier. I didn’t really mean to pressure you."

She sighed. "To be honest, I didn’t even want to get married back then. If Zhao Sinian hadn’t said his grandmother’s health was failing and that she wanted to see him married before she passed, I’d probably still just be dating him."

Zhong Mufeng had never heard Jiang Li mention this before. All she knew was that one day, Jiang Li had suddenly announced she was going to marry Zhao Sinian.

At the time, only one thought had crossed her mind: ’Jiang Li has gone insane.’

But looking at it now, that wasn’t necessarily the case.

Jiang Li turned on the room’s air conditioner with an app on her phone. "But the older generation was right about one thing. If you don’t get married, not only will you be without a partner, but you’ll have no one to look after you in your old age or see to your burial."

"I know you don’t know anything once you’re dead, but if you really end up in a nursing home when you get old, who knows how miserable life would be."

She’d even come across videos of elderly people in nursing homes. The ones without children, or whose children didn’t visit for long periods, could only be described as living out their final years in bleak desolation.

Knowing Zhong Mufeng didn’t like discussing marriage, Jiang Li proactively changed the subject. "By the way, weren’t you competing for a news anchor position before? How come I never heard anything more about it?"

Zhong Mufeng clicked her tongue and shrugged helplessly. "What could I do? Her backers were more powerful than mine, and she paid a hefty sum. Of course there was no room for me, you know?"

Jiang Li’s brow furrowed. She hadn’t expected such underhanded dealings from a legitimate television station. "So, do you still want the job?"

Zhong Mufeng smiled and shook her head. "I feel like the show I’m doing now is pretty good, too. The pay is a bit lower, but it’s a lot less stressful."

Jiang Li narrowed her eyes, clearly not believing a word Zhong Mufeng said.

She knew better than anyone just how badly Zhong Mufeng wanted to be a news anchor. She’d only asked to find out where she stood on it now.

’So it’s just about money, huh?’

’It wasn’t to brag, but there was no one in this world who had more money than she did.’

’And as for connections? Was there anything money couldn’t get?’

But she couldn’t get Zhong Mufeng’s hopes up before things were settled. "All right, then. As long as you think you’re happy, that’s all that matters."

Perhaps because both topics had been a bit heavy, Zhong Mufeng was clearly distracted.

Jiang Li sighed silently and tapped her own lips, chiding herself internally: ’You just had to run your mouth, picking the one topic she didn’t want to hear about.’

To lighten the mood, Jiang Li asked, "You know, it’s been forever since we watched a horror movie together. The house has a home theater, want to give it a go?"

Zhong Mufeng’s eyes lit up. "Yes, let’s do it!"

She had only ever seen home theaters in rich people’s houses on TV and in short films. The chance to experience one up close was an urgent matter that couldn’t be delayed.

Jiang Li sent a message to Xie Wan, then led Zhong Mufeng to the second floor.

The home theater was roughly eighty to ninety square meters, with a starlight ceiling. It had an L-shaped sectional sofa made of brown leather, with a large, solid wood coffee table in front of it.

In addition to the leather sofa, there were five individual and two connected theater recliners, which came with a built-in massage function.

An entire wall served as the screen. On one side was a disc player, with a mini-fridge not far from it. The other side housed an equipment cabinet.

The moment she entered, Zhong Mufeng exclaimed, "My god, this home theater is bigger than my place! No wonder so many people hate the rich."

Jiang Li licked her lips. "Isn’t your apartment a duplex? We could set up a home theater for you, too."

Zhong Mufeng waved her hands. "There’s no need. Don’t waste your money on that."

The main reason is I don’t really have time to watch TV or movies. I’m busy around the clock, so a home theater at my place would just collect dust.

As they spoke, there was a knock on the door of the home theater. "Come in," Jiang Li said.

Zhong Mufeng looked toward the door, puzzled, just in time to see Xie Wan walk in, dressed in a suit.
