Chapter 38: Chapter 24: Buying a Restaurant, Finding an Assistant (Part 3)

She decided she wasn’t going to do this kind of hands-on work anymore.

’Now that I’m this rich, I should be enjoying life. An assistant can handle all these headaches,’ she thought.

As this thought crossed her mind, she couldn’t help but glance over at Liu Qian.

’It’s not that I wouldn’t want Zhong Mufeng as my assistant,’ she mused, ’but she already has a job. Besides, making your best friend your employee could sour the friendship, and I don’t want that to happen.’

The reason Liu Qian had come to mind first was because she had previously mentioned being in debt and had asked her classmates to help her find a well-paying job.

Plus, Liu Qian had studied business administration, which was a perfect fit for the role.

Of course, this was just her idea. She hadn’t actually asked Liu Qian what she thought.

She reached out and poked Zhong Mufeng’s arm. "Hey, what do you think? If I offered Liu Qian a job as my assistant, do you think she’d say yes?"

Zhong Mufeng stared, dumbfounded. "Why not ask me to be your assistant?"

She then shook her head and lamented dramatically, "It’s true what they say—money changes people! I’m clearly not the most important person in your life anymore!"

Jiang Li made a time-out gesture with her hands. "Girl, can you dial back the drama a bit?"

Zhong Mufeng pretended to wipe away a tear. "See? See! You used to call me cute, and now you’re calling me dramatic. The difference between love and indifference is so obvious."

Once the theatrics were over, Zhong Mufeng finally said seriously, "But why are you thinking of Liu Qian? She’s friends with Guo Yao, you know. Be careful she doesn’t backstab you."

Instead of answering, Jiang Li posed a question of her own. "Maybe I just feel like being a good person?"

Zhong Mufeng’s lip twitched. "If you’re going to hire an assistant, you’d be better off with Zheng Qi. At least she’s your number one fan. She’d never betray you."

Jiang Li shook her head while shoveling food into her mouth. "It’s just an idea, nothing’s been decided. You sure have a lot of strong opinions about it."

Zhong Mufeng gave a haughty snort. "Of course I do. I’m your one and only true bestie!"

After paying her share, Guo Yao saw Jiang Li holding her bowl and eating, and her anger flared. "Eat, eat, eat! Is that all you know how to do? Were you a starving ghost in your past life?"

Some people are just asking for trouble.

Jiang Li put down her bowl and chopsticks. "Guo Yao, your crush on Shen Yanzhi is your business. If you want to go after him, then go. Why do you keep trying to get a rise out of me?"

Guo Yao mumbled under her breath, "It’s because he likes you, isn’t it?"

After her family’s house was demolished, she had gone abroad for the sole purpose of following Shen Yanzhi.

But Shen Yanzhi had been completely focused on his studies and his startup. The only time he broke concentration was to occasionally stare, lost in thought, at a photo of Jiang Li.

It wasn’t that Guo Yao had never confessed her feelings. Shen Yanzhi’s reply had been: "I’m sorry, but I already have someone I love. I’m going to keep loving her, and I have no intention of changing that."

He had even shown her a photo of Jiang Li as he rejected her.

Unable to accept it, she had asked, "Well, what if she gets married?"

"Then I’ll quietly wish her happiness. If she’s ever unhappy, I’ll be her rock, someone she can always fall back on without any worries."

After that day, she never confessed her feelings to Shen Yanzhi again, choosing instead to just watch him from afar.

She just never imagined that when Jiang Li did get married, the groom wouldn’t be him.

Guo Yao snorted coldly. "None of your business! I’ll do whatever I want to get your attention!"

Jiang Li rolled her eyes. "Acting like this... anyone who didn’t know better would think I was the one you had a crush on."

Guo Yao scoffed. "Are you made of money or something? ’Have a crush on you?’ Where do you get the nerve?"

Jiang Li couldn’t be bothered to waste her breath arguing with Guo Yao. Seeing that the man had nearly collected the four million, she decided to offer a warning. "Aren’t any of you worried about getting scammed?"

"Jiang Li, if you don’t want to invest, that’s fine, but how can you be so malicious? Are you wishing for us to get scammed?"

"It’s only a few tens of thousands, a hundred thousand at most. If we get scammed, we get scammed. Think of it as just testing the waters."

"Jiang Li, if you’re not going to invest, fine, but I’m so close to collecting the four million. Why are you standing on the sidelines making cynical comments?"

One by one, the crowd chimed in, all of them condemning Jiang Li.

Jiang Li pressed a hand to her forehead. "I’m just trying to warn you to be careful so you don’t get swindled. That’s all."

As soon as the four million was collected, the man urged, "Quick, wire the money to Brother Cheng. He’s going to make us rich!"

"Why don’t you all think about it one more time? What if this really is a scam?"

The man answered resolutely, "No need. Even if it is a scam, I’m willing to take that risk."
