Chapter 29: Chapter 21: Little Fangirl Zheng Qi, Poor Liu Qian

Liu Qian scoffed. "If that’s how you want to play it, I bought you plenty of meals back in the day. Shouldn’t you pay me back for those?"

Guo Yao’s hands clenched into fists. She finally took out her phone and transferred 10,000 yuan to Liu Qian. "Consider the extra interest."

A sarcastic smile touched Liu Qian’s lips. "Well, isn’t our Miss Guo generous."

When she had asked to borrow 10,000 from Guo Yao back then, Guo Yao had claimed she didn’t have the money. Now, she could fish out 10,000 without a second thought.

How ironic.

Seeing that the atmosphere had grown tense, a man suggested, "Well, everyone’s here now. Let’s start by ordering some drinks."

The food had been ordered in advance; they were just waiting for it to be served.

Another man chimed in, "Let’s get a few bottles of red, then. No one’s going home sober tonight!"

"If we’re drinking red, it’s gotta be an ’82 Lafite!"

"You’ve got some nerve. An ’82 Lafite? Do you have any idea how much that costs?"

"We agreed to split the bill beforehand. I can’t afford Lafite. Let’s just get something cheap for now and drink beer for the second round."

Jiang Li raised an eyebrow in surprise. She had thought some big sucker was treating everyone to dinner, but it turned out they were splitting the bill.

Zhong Mufeng tugged on Jiang Li’s sleeve. "Make sure you eat your money’s worth later, otherwise this trip will be a total waste."

’Still, splitting the bill wasn’t a total loss. We got to see some drama right off the bat. Just think of it as the price of admission.’

Jiang Li shook her head, amused. "Oh, you."

’With forty or fifty people, even splitting the bill, a single meal could easily run a hundred or two hundred thousand yuan.’

Just then, Guo Yao spoke up, her tone dripping with envy. "Why are we splitting the bill? Jiang Li here buys handbags for over five million. Let’s just have her treat us."

Someone exclaimed in shock, "What kind of bag costs over five million?!"

Someone marveled, "Jiang Li, what do you do for work? To be making so much money you can just drop over five million on a handbag..."

Another said, full of envy, "That’s no different from carrying a whole apartment on your shoulder!"

All eyes turned to Jiang Li, who suddenly felt like she was sitting on pins and needles. She looked at Guo Yao. "It’s not that I won’t treat everyone. But on one condition: you have to chip in one million."

Guo Yao reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, immediately bristling. "You’ve got some nerve, asking me for a million!"

Jiang Li sneered. "Weren’t you the one who had the bright idea first?"

’It was true she had money, but she had no intention of being a patsy.’

’She was perfectly willing to treat everyone to dinner, but only if it was her own idea, not when she was being cornered like this.’

"You can afford a handbag that costs over five million; treating everyone to one meal isn’t asking too much!"

"We agreed to split the bill, so why should Jiang Li have to foot the bill for everyone? Just because she can afford a five-million-yuan handbag? By that logic, if someone here buys an apartment worth tens of millions, should they have to hand out cash gifts to all of us?"

"Guo Yao, what do you have to say to that?"

What else could Guo Yao say? "Fine, we’ll split the bill."

’It was almost the end of the month, and she only had a little over a hundred thousand left in her account. She wasn’t about to go broke just to save face.’

’She had wanted to make Jiang Li the sucker, but she never expected her to be so quick-witted and turn the tables on her so effectively.’

Biting her lip, she said, "Since we’re having a second round, maybe we shouldn’t drink during lunch."

’If she overspent, the old man would probably dock her allowance again.’

Most people agreed with Guo Yao’s suggestion. After all, not everyone had that kind of money.

The average cost per person at a place like this was a hundred thousand yuan. If they added Lafite to the bill, they’d all be broke by the time the reunion was over.

Showing off feels great in the moment, but paying for it is miserable.

As she had been a major figure on campus, once the issue was settled, someone immediately asked out of curiosity, "Miss Jiang, where are you making your fortune these days?"

Jiang Li smiled. "Just taking it easy at home."

Guo Yao reacted as if she’d just heard the funniest joke. "So, you married some rich old man, is that it?"

’If he wasn’t some old geezer, why wouldn’t Jiang Li bring her husband along?’

’That explained it. How else could Jiang Li afford a handbag worth over five million?’

’So she’d married some old man and was basically a kept woman.’

Jiang Li scoffed. "Oh? Were you hiding under my bed or something? How are you so sure he’s an old man?"

Guo Yao, however, was convinced she was right. "If he’s not an old man, then why didn’t you bring him? You just said you’re newlyweds. Your family just runs a supermarket, where would all this money come from?"

Jiang Li’s lips curved into a sweet smile. "Well, by that logic, I could say *you’re* the one dating an old man. Why else aren’t you married yet? He must be too old, and you’re afraid your family won’t approve."
