Chapter 20: Chapter 14: My Wife Will Kiss Me On Her Own

Jiang Bowen hadn’t believed it at first, thinking Jing Shiyun was lying to him.

But when he entered the kitchen, he discovered that not only was Shen Yanzhi efficient, he could even toss food in the wok. Several finished dishes were already sitting on the counter.

Hearing the sound, Shen Yanzhi turned around. When he saw it was Jiang Bowen, he quickly put down his spatula and called, "Dad."

Jiang Bowen rubbed the tip of his nose. "Is there anything I can help with?"

He had no experience interacting with a son-in-law, so things were a little awkward.

Shen Yanzhi shook his head. "No, you can go out and chat with Mom and the others. I’m almost done with the last dish."

Jiang Bowen cleared his throat a couple of times. "Alright then. Thanks for going to all this trouble."

Shen Yanzhi quickly waved his hand in dismissal. "It’s no trouble at all."

’Cooking for the person you love is a blessing. How could it be any trouble?’

When Jiang Bowen came out of the kitchen, Jiang Li held out a shopping bag. "Dad, this is a gift Yan Zhi bought for you."

A smile flashed in Jiang Bowen’s eyes, though he said, "This boy... You shouldn’t have. Just visiting is more than enough."

His hands, however, were already busy, eagerly pulling the contents out of the shopping bag.

After pulling out all the gifts, Jiang Bowen couldn’t help but take a sharp breath. "None of this is cheap. What kind of work does Xiao Shen do?"

Jiang Li’s answer was firm this time. "He’s in investments. He has a bit of money."

Jiang Bowen said disapprovingly, "Even if he has money, you can’t just burn through it like this."

Jiang Li got up and grabbed Jiang Bowen’s arm. "Oh, Dad! This is him showing his respect for you as a son-in-law. It’s not like he’ll be buying this much every time. Don’t you worry about it."

On second thought, Jiang Bowen figured she had a point. For a son-in-law’s first visit, he’d want to buy nothing but the best for his parents-in-law.

After all, he’d been the same way during his first visit all those years ago.

Jiang Bowen glanced toward the kitchen and asked in a low voice, "You two got married in such a rush yesterday. Are you sure there aren’t any problems?"

It was true he was dissatisfied with Zhao Sinian, but he didn’t know Shen Yanzhi either. He had no idea if Jiang Li would find happiness.

Jiang Li had Jiang Bowen sit on the sofa, then sat down between her parents, linking her arms through theirs. "Mom, Dad, you don’t need to worry. Yan Zhi and I were classmates in college."

She glanced toward the kitchen. "I used to like him back then, but Zhao Sinian used the fact that he’d saved my life to make me be his girlfriend. That’s why we were apart for five years, with no contact in between."

The corners of her lips curved up slightly. "Actually, I’m kind of grateful to Zhao Sinian. If it weren’t for him, Yan Zhi and I might never have crossed paths again."

Jing Shiyun held Jiang Li’s hand. "And what about Xiao Shen? Does he like you?"

Jiang Li’s heart stuttered at the question, but it was Jiang Bowen who answered, beaming. "He must. Otherwise, why would he step up to the plate with just one phone call from our girl?"

Jing Shiyun nodded in agreement. "That’s true."

She patted the back of Jiang Li’s hand. "In that case, you just focus on building a good life with Xiao Shen."

Jiang Bowen immediately chimed in, "And it would be best if you gave me and your mom a grandchild to hold soon."

With Jiang Li’s and Shen Yanzhi’s genes, their child was bound to be a looker.

The very thought was delightful.

Jiang Li couldn’t help but stomp her foot. "Dad!"

’She hadn’t even had enough time alone with Shen Yanzhi yet. What was this talk about children?’

Jiang Bowen raised his hands in surrender. "Alright, alright, I’ll drop it."

Just as Shen Yanzhi came out with a dish, he happened to hear Jiang Li’s flustered voice. He immediately called out, "Mom, Dad, Xiao Li, time to wash up for dinner."

"Okay!" Jiang Li chirped.

She stood up, first heading to the kitchen to get bowls and utensils, then bringing out the remaining dishes.

In total, Shen Yanzhi had made five meat dishes, two vegetable dishes, and a soup—quite a lavish spread.

Jiang Li couldn’t help but give him a thumbs-up. "Wow, I’m impressed. Your cooking skills are amazing."

Plus, every single dish was something her family of three loved to eat.

Shen Yanzhi licked his lips, his gaze darting away, though he still watched Jiang Li from the corner of his eye. "If you like it, I’ll cook for you every day from now on."

Jiang Li shook her head. "That would be too much trouble. Cooking for me once in a while is more than enough."

’The villa has a chef; she didn’t want to exhaust Shen Yanzhi like that.’

When the couple brought the last of the dishes to the table, Jiang Bowen couldn’t help but marvel, "Xiao Shen, I really had no idea you were such a good cook!"

Shen Yanzhi pulled out a stool. "I just threw a few dishes together. Let’s see if they’re to your taste."

After Jiang Li sat down, he took an unopened box of liquor from the side, removed the bottle, twisted off the cap, and poured two glasses.

Then, he grabbed the orange juice, twisted off its cap, and poured glasses for Jing Shiyun and Jiang Li.

He handed the glass of liquor to Jiang Bowen and the juice to Jing Shiyun, then raised his own glass. "Dad, Mom, I’d like to toast you. Thank you for bringing someone as wonderful as Jiang Li into this world."

At his words, Jiang Li blushed crimson and didn’t know where to look.

He raised his glass. "I’ll drain my glass; you two can drink as you please." With that, he tilted his head back and finished it in one gulp, as if it were water, not hard liquor.

Jiang Bowen’s face lit up with a grin. "Xiao Shen, you can really hold your liquor!"

In the past, he’d never had a drinking buddy at home.

Now that Shen Yanzhi was here, Jiang Bowen was naturally in high spirits.

After a few glasses, the initial stiffness between the two men vanished, and they were soon slinging arms over each other’s shoulders like old pals.

Jing Shiyun shook her head in resignation. "Look at your father. Once he starts drinking, he won’t stop. You and Xiao Shen should just stay the night. The sheets are freshly changed, and we have pajamas for you."

Jiang Li shrugged. "I guess we have no other choice."

Jiang Bowen and Shen Yanzhi drank until past eleven, mixing hard liquor with red wine.

The drinking session finally came to an end when Jiang Bowen was the first to pass out.

Jiang Li gently patted Shen Yanzhi’s shoulder, offering him a glass of honey water. "How are you? Are you okay?"

As if he had no bones in his body, Shen Yanzhi draped himself all over Jiang Li. "Not good. My head is spinning."

Jiang Li frowned, a pang of sympathy hitting her as she brought the honey water to his lips. "Drink the honey water first."

Shen Yanzhi tilted his head, staring at Jiang Li with hazy, unfocused eyes. "I only drink what my wife gets for me."

Both exasperated and amused, Jiang Li said, "I *am* your wife."

Shen Yanzhi shook his head. "I don’t believe you."

Jiang Li sighed in resignation. "Then what will it take for you to believe me?"

Shen Yanzhi pouted and pointed to his lips. "My wife would kiss me on her own."

Jiang Li’s cheeks burned. She glanced around—Jing Shiyun had already helped Jiang Bowen back to their room. Only she and Shen Yanzhi were left in the living room.

Biting her lip, she finally screwed her eyes shut and pressed her lips against his.

In an instant, however, Shen Yanzhi turned the tables, his kiss becoming fervent and urgent, as if he meant to devour her.

Jiang Li was kissed until her head spun. It wasn’t until she found herself lying on the bed that she realized things had spiraled out of control.

By the end of it all, Jiang Li swore to herself that she would never let Shen Yanzhi drink that much again.

It was murder on her back, and it completely ruined her voice.
