Chapter 48: Chapter 48 Soul Search

The elder looked at her calmly, but the lines on his forehead already showed how impatient he was becoming. "It will be over very quickly."

’That’s exactly what every suspicious person says.’ Xue Yao instinctively took another small step backward until her back nearly touched the wall.

The leading elder quietly observed her before saying, "Very well."

Xue Yao blinked. ’He gave up?’

Before she could feel relieved, the elder calmly continued, "Since you refuse the physical inspection, we shall inspect your memories instead... we normally don’t do this as most beasts can not withstand it, I doubt a human as weak as you can."

The smile on Xue Yao’s face disappeared. For a brief moment, she simply stared at him, unable to process his words.

Then her eyes widened. "...My memories?"

"They will reveal everything that occurred last night." The elder said with a grunt.

Xue Yao’s mind went completely blank. ’Wait... they can actually do that?’

Her heartbeat suddenly sped up. ’No. No, this is much worse. If they search my memories, they won’t only see last night. What if they accidentally see everything else? They’ll see Earth. They’ll see the apocalypse. They’ll see the system. They’ll see the contract with Lie Lang. They might even discover my transmigration.’

If any one of those secrets came to light, she had no idea what would happen. She had only arrived in this world a few days ago. She did not even understand half of the things these wolves talked about. There was no way she would foolishly expose every secret she carried just because a few old men demanded it.

Worried about protecting those information she missed the fact that she might survive the soul search.

Just imagining it made her scalp go numb. The inspection she had desperately tried to avoid suddenly seemed harmless compared to this.

She would never allow anyone to search her memories. Never.

The five elders slowly raised their hands together, and an invisible pressure spread through the room.

The air became heavy, making it difficult to breathe.

Honghong’s feathers immediately puffed up. "Xue Yao..."

Xue Yao swallowed nervously without taking her eyes off the elders. Her mind raced wildly, searching for a way out.

Could she run?

No. The door was blocked.

Could she fight against five terrifying old monsters?

She would probably be flattened before taking three steps, and she doubted her weapons will work on them as they are above S-level in their cultivation.

Could she lie? Looking at their calm expressions, she doubted they would believe a single word she said.

’Think... come on, think. There has to be something. Anything. I don’t care how ridiculous it is, just give me an excuse before they start digging around inside my head.’

The five magical energies of spiritual pressure quietly gathered around the elders, growing stronger with every passing breath.

Xue Yao felt her palms becoming damp. ’No... I can’t let them do this. Even if I have to climb out the window, jump off the roof, or run into the forest barefoot, I am not letting anyone search my memories.’

Just as the elders released their spiritual sense toward her, an invisible weight pressed on her like a mountain.

A golden rune appeared above her head. Xue Yao felt her head splitting apart. Even Honghong fell to the ground, unable to bear the pressure.

"Tian Lan, do something, else they will find out about you!" Xue Yao cried as her knees dug to the ground.

Tian Lan materialised in front of her. [They have gone too far.] She muttered under her breath.

With a flick of her fingers, her pale blue eyes, hair and clothes turned red, and in the next second she shot herself upward towards the rune with a red static whip in her hand.

[Break for me!] She slashed the whip against the rune.

A wave broke through the air from the impact, and a crack formed on the rune.

The elders’ eyes widened, unable to believe that a human had the power to resist them.

"Use all your power!" The leading elder shouted, and in the next second, they quickly made a gesture with their hands before channeling all of their powers back to the rune.

Tian Lan growled from frustration, her eyes burning with fury. Her red hair floated in the air. She closed her eyes, muttering words under her breath, and instantly five runes condensed around her.

Shòu, Hún, Qì, Yù, and Yuán.

The moment the fifth rune completed its formation, the five symbols revolved around Tian Lan like heavenly stars, releasing an ancient pressure that seemed to suppress every beast in existence.

Every beast in the room suddenly fell to their knees, both the ones a few miles around the place.

The elders’ knees trembled, their eyes burning with conviction. Their eyes burned with disbelief... How could a human have such power?

Ruo Shuo groaned as she buried her head to the ground, it felt as if her beast was tied and couldn’t fight, all it could do was submit.

[Go!] With her command the five runes burst upward with fiery energy.

Boom!

The Runes above Xue Yao shattered. And the next second, Tian Lan’s eyes fluttered closed as she plummeted downward, her features returning back to their usual Pale Blue.

Xue Yao quickly caught her. "Tian Lan, are you okay?" She asked, worry clouding her eyes.

[I just need to recuperate for some days, I just all of my energy to protect you... Xue Yao, you have caused me so much trouble, now I wonder if it is a good thing that you found me.] Tian Lan’s voice weakened as she slowly disappeared from her hands.

A drop of tears rolled down Xue Yao’s cheeks, her last words were like a searing blade to her heart. ’Does she regret meeting me?’ She thought in pain.

But before she could ponder on it, the Rune above them formed again, and the pressure grew even stronger.

The elders coughed up blood, but because of pride they would not allow a young breeder to defeat them.

Xue Yao let out a scream as the feeling of her head splitting apart tore through her. Her eyes dilated as memories of the dragon turtle, the strange looking wolves, her taming Honghong flashed through her unwillingly...

A cold voice suddenly rang through the room. "Stop!"

The single word carried overwhelming authority. Before anyone could react, the chamber doors were pushed open from the outside.
