The crackling sound of the fire echoed from a cell farther down the prison corridor. The bright, warm light illuminated the prison.
The guards sighed in despair.
"Just how many days is she going to continue torturing us... this is too much!" One of the guards hugged his spear, crying invisible tears.
The other guard standing beside him awkwardly tapped him on the shoulder to console him. His brown eyes stared at the cell in particular. "This is the third day she has been cooking. It’ll make it the fifth time she’s cooked today, plus the five times she cooked yesterday, and two times day before yesterday. Altogether, that’s 12 times." He sniffled.
They paused for a second the moment they heard someone sniffling behind them. They turned around slightly only to find dozens of guards standing behind them, their noses inhaling the heavenly aroma.
"I can’t take this anymore!" Yun Kai shouted from behind the crowd, pushing his way through the guards.
One of the guards held him back. "If Fang Zhen knows about this, he is going to report you to the Alpha, and you might lose your life... You are still a pup, don’t lose your life because of one sweet thing."
"Mu Tian, let go of me! I might die without tasting this food." Yun Kai stopped struggling. "Can any of you deny that this aroma is heavenly? I heard that only a chef in a celestial realm can cook something this rich and magical. Even one breath makes me feel like my cultivation is improving. Imagine eating the actual food."
The guards fell silent, torn between keeping their dignity and going to a human girl to ask for food.
Seeing them waver, Yun Kai continued. "How many of you have encountered a Celestial Cook?"
None of them answered.
"Exactly, because there is none in the beast realm. They are all in the heavenly realm, and I can’t let this moment pass me by just like that." Yun Kai finally broke free from Mu Tian’s grip.
Yun Kai inhaled sharply, his senses overwhelmed by the delicious aroma. He could really taste the fat dripping into the coal.
Suddenly, he felt as though he were floating on cloud nine, with roasted meats swirling around him, their golden brown skin glistening with dripping fat.
"Yun Kai, are you going, or are you just going to stand here?" One of the guards nudged him, his eyes wide like a saucepan.
As long as there was someone who would take the first step, then they had nothing to fear... as long as they are not the one.
Yun Kai ran a hand into his orange-red hair, his light honey eyes widened with anticipation while adjusting the leather strap crossing his well-chiselled chest.
For as long as he could remember, females had always run after him, loved him, wanted him, and adored him. Why not use his charm to capture the human cook?
He cleared his throat, striding down the hallway confidently. When he turned around, all the guards gave him a thumbs up and encouraged him to keep going.
Yun Kai scoffed. The closer he approached, the more his mind raced.
Meanwhile inside the cell room, Xue Yao had decided to go for a rock rabbit barbecue. The sizzling oil released a mouth-watering aroma.
Tian Lan floated in the air, fanning the aroma towards the entrance of the cell.
Xue Yao frowned slightly. "Tian Lan, it’s been the second day and the wolf guards are not caving in... am I doing something wrong, or is rabbit meat not enough to break their restraint?"
[They will surely come around. Your cooking skills are one of the best, they can’t resist it.] Tian Lan replied with full confidence, while continuing to fan the aroma.
Xue Yao’s hands balled into fists. "If it doesn’t work on the second day..." a smirk formed on the corner of her lips. "... then I will cook again on the third day. If they are still stubborn, then I will do it again on the fourth day until they give in."
She stared at the Beast Heart Pendant around her neck. It was a red stone with a hexagonal shape, a little rough to the touch.
Xue Yao’s fingers absentmindedly rubbed the Beast Heart Pendant hanging around her neck as she turned another rabbit over the charcoal. The golden skin crackled softly, and another wave of rich aroma drifted through the prison. Just then, Yun Kai stepped into the firelight, and before Xue Yao even had the chance to look at him properly, an unfamiliar feeling quietly settled over her.
It wasn’t her own emotion.
She could clearly sense Yun Kai’s excitement, curiosity, anticipation, and an overwhelming desire that was directed entirely at the rabbit barbecue in her hands. Hidden beneath all of it was another emotion that made her blink in surprise. He wanted to impress her.
Xue Yao looked at him again, and the corner of her lip slowly curved upward. ’The mouse has finally taken the bait... second step; play hard to get... wheeee.’ She thought inwardly.
’Oh, how much I wish I could hear his thoughts. Unfortunately, I’m not even considered a level one cultivator. Sigh. I need to do something about this too.’
Yun Kai casually ran a hand through his orange-red hair before adjusting the leather strap across his shoulder. He puffed out his chest, flashed what he believed to be his most charming smile, and confidently walked toward the prison bars.
"Human." He called out in a hoarse voice, while winking at her sexily.
Xue Yao calmly brushed another layer of seasoning over the rabbit before finally lifting her eyes to him. "What?"
Yun Kai smiled even wider when she looked at him. The excitement she sensed from him immediately intensified, while the desire to show off almost made Xue Yao laugh.
"Do you like what you see?" His eyes dilated a bit.
Xue Yao let her eyes roam freely across his body. She unconsciously swallowed. Yeah, he was hot, especially those six-packs abs.
"Ouch." She grimaced when Tian Lan smacked her on the head.
[You are on a mission right now. Don’t let anything or anyone distract you. And wipe the drool from your mouth.] She said with a huff.
But the moment her eyes fell on Yun Kai, her eyes widened. [Oh my...] She dramatically placed one of her hands on her forehead. [He smells so young, fresh like the morning dew, yet hot like a spicy chicken soup. I wouldn’t mind attending to him at all... oh, how I wish he were the one who found me...]
Xue Yao snapped out of her daze. She rolled her eyes inwardly at her comment. "You should get a hold of yourself too." She muttered under her breath.
Before she could finish her words, Tian Lan had already appeared beside her, gazing at his face with half-lidded eyes, while batting her eyelashes at him.
Yun Kai puffed his chest out. "I can let you have a taste of me."
