Chapter 39: 39. Awakened

The clouds of burning dust fell in an instant, Raika falling face first onto the ground, Alaric’s forehead kissing the hard ground with a thud.

"What!!" Raika’s body felt heavy, as if she was under a mountain, and in a way she was.

The Drake’s innate ability, gravity field had activated, ten times the gravity of Chroma.

She felt her bones creak under the pressure, teeth gritted, groaning as she pushed herself up.

Ears ringing from the ear-rupturing roar of the Drake.

Alaric faring no better, blood dripped

from his forehead and eyes, conjunctival vessels broken under the weight of gravity.

Breaths shallow and painful, unable to pull enough air into his lungs.

Though unconscious, his expression was evidence he was in pain.

Raika panicked as she noticed Alaric’s state.

Her bloodshot gaze turned to the Drake.

The Earth Drake stood majestic in the Stony Valley, now filled with dust and ashes.

A massive wingless reptile clad in jagged stone-like scales that made it resemble a living boulder. Layers of jagged stone scales overlapped across its body, forming natural armor.

Its eyes inorganic, pupil-less black iron shaped as an eye, clearly one without any light.

Its head hung low due to its large stubby stony limbs, the wedge-like head crowned by several stony horns swept back, almost blending with the scales on its neck.

Maw wide open, lined with rows of jagged lustrous minerals dripping with falling sand.

Its tail a rocky massive tail ending with five flags like a maze.

Raika gnashed her teeth in rage. She wanted to attack it, though she could only hope to leave a flesh wound on it, but she still wanted to try.

But given Alaric’s condition, she had to leave for safety.

She flashed upwards, uninhibited by gravity like a ground-to-cloud lightning.

Flashing once again mid-air towards the edge of the valley.

They arrived in seconds. Raika unstrapping Alaric to give him first aid.

Wham!!

A wall of air blast separated the two.

Raika’s eyes widening.

" Not again?"

Lightning streaking across her form, but it was too late. As soon as the wall of air was deployed, so were the spears of ice, each aimed at Alaric’s heart.

Bam!!

Dust rose as the spears fell, Raika breaking through the wall of air, breaths hitched but she paused.

Not because she saw the worst scenario but...

Her brows arched in panic, relaxed, a smile tugging at her lips.

The dust settled, revealing four ice spears levitating several inches away from Alaric, the latter awake, arm outstretched, palms straightened as if to stop an incoming force, and truly they did.

He had somehow stopped the ice spears mid-air.

"What happened..." he groaned in pain, his whole body screaming in agony.

Every breath sent a ripple of pain up his body, his other hand feeling for his bloodied face.

He had woken from his enlightenment.

Meanwhile, several metres from Alaric stood the Nebula assassins, their mouths agape under their masks.

Frozen in shock by what they beheld.

Alaric was controlling their ice spears, not even sharing control but complete control, as if it belonged to him.

They had felt the connection with the spell yet couldn’t control it, like a paralyzed man sure he had legs yet couldn’t move them.

Mana, like DNA, is exclusive to each individual, and to the magic world that concept is known as a mana signature.

Each mage possessed their exclusive signature and thus, a spell created by someone could never be hijacked by another.

It was common knowledge, yet a supposed zero resonance mage had hijacked their power. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

As they stared on, the spear of ice began to liquefy, quickly turning into steam before it completely evaporated.

Alaric sharply turned his gaze towards their direction.

Before they could react, Raika was already in front of them, three powerful bolts of lightning descending on them.

Crackle!

They fell, bodies falling apart as it hit the ground.

They had died so easily, caught because they never believed a zero resonance mage could track their direction when even Raika couldn’t.

The boy they were assigned to kill became the cause of their demise.

Raika flashed back to Alaric’s position, the latter downing a vial of health potion.

Not as effective as the legendary-grade healing potion, but it did the job.

A rare-grade potion, two grades below legendary.

The pain he felt when breathing lessened, conjunctival vessels repaired, internal organs repaired to a considerable degree; superficial wounds were completely gone.

"How... how do you feel?" Raika stammered, averting her gaze from Alaric.

She felt guilty for once again almost losing him.

She was supposed to be his mother, the one to protect him but she had failed not just once but twice at doing it.

If he had not woken up at the time he did, he would have surely died, and this time there would be no way to save him.

The legendary-grade health potion they had was only a vial.

"I am fine, mother. No need to worry..." Alaric smiled reassuringly, Raika’s mood lifting.

"I am so glad." She hugged him, lifting him off the ground. Alaric, who was not completely healed, only laughed through the pain, as he knew she would blame herself if he showed it.

"How did you find them?" She set him down.

She had her senses stretched to the max since the incident, but never once did she catch a glimpse of their location.

"Oh, there was a translucent blue thread from the ice spear to where they were," Alaric explained what he saw.

"Blue threads?" Raika tilted her head.

She was unaware Alaric was referring to the link every mage had with their spell.

The reason why a mage could not manifest a spell at a certain range away from them.

"Can you explain? I don’t get it," Raika asked curiously.

She wanted to know for future reference.

Throughout her life, she had not faced foes like the nebula assassins before. She needed to prepare if such enemies appeared later along their journey.

"Em, I don’t know how to explain it," Alaric scratched his head.

Meanwhile, several miles away from them, a pair of silver eyes glowed...
