Chapter 2482: Chapter 2546: No Tears Until You See the Coffin
District Chief Yue was nicknamed Yue Buqun. With a fair face and no beard, he resembled a handsome scholar, and even in middle age, he was quite photogenic. However, his reputation wasn’t great; rumors said he was skilled at flirting with female subordinates, and his vague relationships with them were well known. It’s said many pretty women in his district, including civil servants, had been involved with him.
With good looks, a high position, and some cunning, it was easy for him to make women submit. Furthermore, he treated those involved well, offering promotions and transfers effortlessly. Of course, these were just rumors; none of the wronged husbands made a fuss, well, not many. A couple of years ago, one man even charged into the District Committee wielding a knife but was eventually apprehended by the police, and the matter didn’t escalate further; at least, the man didn’t cause any more trouble afterward.
As for others, many men would turn a blind eye; since their wives benefitted from quick promotions and rewards, they let it slide. Believe it or not, such matters are known by you, me, heaven and earth, and gossipy old ladies at various departments...
Back to the topic, Yue Buqun had a son in middle age, born to his young second wife. The child was now eighteen, while Yue Buqun was fifty-four. A late-life child indeed, he could still serve another term as district chief. In fact, he’d done two terms already, granting him immense power in the new development zone. It’s not like others weren’t considering his position; he had connections in the province—a rumored old schoolmate. Besides, Yue Buqun didn’t wish for further promotions, preferring to retire as district chief, hence his prolonged tenure.
Well-informed sources leaked that Yue Buqun’s old schoolmate in the province was a woman, ugly but fortunate with her career, rumored to have had a crush on Yue Buqun. This connection, so to speak, worked in favor of promotion, and because of it, Yue Buqun’s career was both prosperous and stable.
In the new development zone, District Chief Yue stood as a towering figure, enjoying prolonged eminence. Yang Jin and others at the Public Security Sub-bureau also worked in this area. Yang Jin was familiar with Yue Liang, having often cleaned up his messes over the past two years to curry favor. Unfortunately, his attempts only backfired; Yue Liang was rather uninterested, responding nonchalantly when used, and dismissing when not.
This time, with Yue Liang involved in a car accident, he directly called Yang Jin for help. Initially, Yang Jin agreed without much thought, but upon investigation, found it problematic. Having promised to handle it, he was compelled to proceed, approaching with trepidation. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, he found himself thrown out by Li Yifei, leading to the subsequent occurrences.
Had Yang Jin another chance, he wouldn’t agree at all, and the instructor... he was already bitter with regret, cursing his boldness in getting involved in such a mess.
Alas, it was too late; he’d already offended Li Yifei and ended up beaten, with the situation blown out of proportion. Moreover, even without offending Li Yifei, his fate could still be grim; as an instructor for years, sometimes he’d act rashly, prioritizing people over facts.
Li Yifei watched their argument and insults coldly, stating, "Enough. Yang Jin, right? And you, get the perpetrator for me now. I don’t care if he’s some district chief’s son or his background. My understanding is he ran a red light, hit someone, and fled, possibly drunk driving."
Arrest the district chief’s son? The instructor paused, instinctively shook his head, but quickly stopped. He didn’t dare arrest the district chief’s son; even if strong, in Huaxia, officialdom trumped all. Hierarchy dictated everything; attempting such a move would be insubordination, allowing higher-ups any punitive measures, although physical punishment was no longer allowed, other sanctions were still viable.
The instructor didn’t want involvement, despite knowing it seemed Yue Liang’s fault. Not knowing Li Yifei’s background, he knew he couldn’t provoke him, at least not physically; the man was too fierce.
Yang Jin grimaced, unwilling but resigned to having hit hard luck today.
"Fine, won’t arrest?" Li Yifei nodded gently, stomping Yang Jin’s leg. A scream echoed far, resonating between buildings, causing listeners to wince; that stomp shattered Yang Jin’s knee, and Li Yifei aimed for the instructor next. The latter hastily rolled aside, pleading, "Please, no, I’ll call for his arrest, don’t crush my leg!"
"Won’t cry till you see the coffin," Li Yifei replied coldly.
Damn, you’d cry even without seeing it! The consequences were dreadful; the instructor was deeply resentful, yet with looming mountains and the nearby threat, he chose the latter, dialing quickly while eyeing Li Yifei. Hesitating, he said, "Chief... it’s me, I’ve encountered a situation requiring your assistance..."
The instructor awkwardly finished, with the chief stunned, wondering what madness prompted him to arrest Yue Liang, not realizing Yue Liang was indeed the district chief’s son—or had he lost his mind? But understanding dawned; likely Yue Liang had misbehaved or worse, prompting this. After consideration, he replied, "Decide yourself, but I advise you verify before acting, lest you wrongly accuse someone; complicating things with District Chief Yue."
Curse you, the instructor thought furiously, seeing the chief shirk responsibility. It was clear that Yue Liang potentially drunk drove, jumped a light, hit someone, then fled; isn’t that transparent enough? Yet, no action...
"Chief, my rank is too low; I can’t decide this, you must make the decision!"
"I’m in a provincial meeting, decide yourself. I’ll hang up now." The chief said, ending the call.
Listening to the dial tone, the instructor shook slightly after several seconds, glancing at Li Yifei unsure of how to respond.
"Your entire Public Security System is rotten," Li Yifei stated. The instructor laughed awkwardly, replying, "That’s... the Sub-bureau Chief, Sir, as you see I’ve called, but truly am powerless. Perhaps... you call your friends for aid, that’d be more convenient, given District Chief Yue’s stature; without higher orders, we dare not arrest anyone."
Li Yifei stared, "So you’re telling me, your uniform is just for show?"
"No... absolutely not, but... an official above you crushes you, much exceedingly higher levels. I’m powerless." The instructor replied.
"Heh." Li Yifei chuckled cynically.
The chief, post-call, felt uneasy. He wasn’t in any provincial meeting but to arrive at the District Committee to report work, then received this call, feeling vexed. Had he gone mad wishing to arrest the district chief’s son? Even if Yue Liang drunkenly drove causing an accident, couldn’t solve the district chief’s dilemma by minimizing the issue instead of escalating it?
This sort of affair embarrasses everyone. District Chief unamused, thought briefly, stomped foot, and turned towards the district chief’s office, knocking softly. The new development zone had unique Assembly, with him as both District Committee Secretary and District Chief — one of his privileges.
The chief knocked and entered, District Chief Yue, upon seeing him, smiled, "Forgot to report something earlier?"—as earlier he had rendered work report.
"Well... District Chief, I indeed have something to report." The chief closed the door behind, District Chief Yue frowned slightly. To express frugality and fairness, typically he left his office door open for work reports. Of course, matters genuinely unspeakable weren’t delivered here.
"Speak seated." District Chief Yue said amiably, the chief being his man—for his position as Sub-bureau Chief, no way other than being one of his own or would’ve been reassigned long ago.
"District Chief, it’s my mishandling; yet, I knew only moments ago. Rest assured, I’ll certainly criticize and educate them back."
"What’s happening? Worth both criticism and education—don’t stress, describe it; work oversight deserves critique; other matters, subject to evaluation, don’t sweepingly condemn." District Chief Yue warmly advised.
The chief nodded hurriedly, gathered thoughts, saying, "The instructor reported... um, Young Master Yue apparently had a car accident!"
"What?" District Chief Yue slightly startled, his son crashed a car? How hadn’t he known; promptly querying, "Is this true? How’s Yue Liang now? I hadn’t heard anything!"
"District Chief, don’t worry, Young Master’s fine, the car struck bad though." The chief reassured.
Only then District Chief Yue relaxed somewhat; being a late-life child, this son was dearly cherished, indulgence in abundance. Should something happen, he’d be devastated. Confirming no harm, he remarked, "A car damaged is repairable; health matters most. Grateful for informing me, that little rascal kept it secret."
The chief produced a smile, stated afterwards: "District Chief, I’m confident Young Master wasn’t deliberate, yet during the accident, he accidentally hit a pedestrian."
