Chapter 17: An Uneasy Heart

"E-Eh!? B-But, are you sure you’re okay?" Sarah questioned, her eyes showing visible worry as she looked up Loraine who simply smiled at her.

"Mhm, positive!" Loraine replied in a cheerful manner, flashing the girl a bright smile that seemed to ease her worries a bit, feeling the tense grip around her waist easing up a bit.

’It’s strange, up until now I’ve been pretending to be Loraine, but when I’m with her...it feels effortless.’ She thought, still unsure as to how to feel about everything.

"Well, I’m glad you’re safe." Sarah said, pushing herself off of Loraine as she began to let go of the silver haired woman, straightening her posture as she dusted her clothes off and smoothened out her wrinkles.

"Are you heading back already?" The question left Loraine’s lips, her voice carrying a shocked tone.

’Wait, isn’t her shift over? We still have yet to eat dinner....’ Loraine thought, her fist clenching at her side as she tried her best to look composed.

"Mhm, I still have some things I need to take care of." Sarah spoke with a small nod, she could easily see the worry Loraine had, even though she tried to hide it in order to look strong. The gesture made her smile a bit.

"But don’t worry, after I’m done I’ll make sure to come visit you again tonight." Sarah said, walking towards the door as she waved Loraine goodbye, her hand reaching for the doorknob.

Loraine smiled as she waved back in return, though she couldn’t help but feel a bit worried.

While she was happy to see her friend again, her mind immediately flashed back to the memories of what happened before all this.

Her dear friend being abused by the young master, the fact that nobody dared speak about the matter and pretended like everything was fine, as no one had the power, or courage to speak up against the evil that bled inside this household.

The door closed with a soft click, leaving Loraine alone in her room once more, alone with the anger that started to seep out of her being.

’Young Master....’ Loraine thought, her eyes glowing with her hatred as her hands clenched at her sides, her body radiating a killing intent she never knew she had. She glanced at her palm, noticing the imprints of her nails through her skin, a small trace of blood coating her finger nails and a burning sensation dancing on her palm.

"So much is happening in one day," Loraine muttered to herself, "Getting killed by a noble, getting beaten to half health by the Margret, the other maids after my head...and now Sarah....." Loraine sighed, walking to her bed as she flopped onto the mattress, exhausted, both physically and mentally.

’And maybe emotionally too...’ Loraine muttered, closing her eyes as the sun started to set down the horizon.

’I just hope Sarah doesn’t get into further trouble...’ She thought, as her eyelids grew too heavy to fight, the darkness consuming her whole as she was sucked into a long slumber, the exhausted maid forgetting to switch out of her clothes. freewebnøvel.coɱ

Elsewhere in the mansion.....

Two maids were gathered in the garden’s square, a ominous meeting playing out in the shadows. Alice glanced at Beatrice as the red head maid made her way towards her, a smile blooming on her lips as she turned to face her.

"There you are, I was beginning to think that Margret had kidnapped you." Alice teased, her voice as smooth as silk. "I was getting bored waiting for you, you know?" She said.

Beatrice merely laughed at Alice’s antics, "Oh please, you know I was busy, its not so easy controlling the other maids." She said, a wicked smile playing on her lips as she pulled out a chair from a nearby table, crossing her legs as she sat down, an exhausted sigh escaping her lips.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever. I don’t have much time to be snooping around out here, so lets get this over with." Alice spoke, sliding into a chair opposite of Beatrice as she crossed her arms on the table. "Have you spied on Loraine like I asked you to?" Alice asked, getting straight to the question.

"Oh yes, it was a bit of a hassle tracking her down, but I did manage to find her in the end." Beatrice spoke, immediately capturing Alice’s attention as she watched her lean in closer.

"And? What did you find out?" Alice asked.

"Well...it was underwhelming to say the least, I found her in the study cleaning up the place." She started, her voice carrying a hint of boredom as she slumped forward. "The damn girl was struggling to clean after the place, her clumsiness even toppled some books over the shelves."

Beatrice said with an amused chuckle, before continuing, "However, one thing immediately caught my attention. The girl was holding onto one of the study’s [Skill Book]s." She finished in a conspiratorial whisper.

Alice’s eyes widened immediately, her heart skipping a beat in her chest. "A...a [Skill Book]? Are you sure? Why would she be holding onto one?" Alice asked, her voice a bit shaky as she started to sweat a bit, her heart racing in her chest.

Beatrice simply shrugged, "I have no idea, It confused me as well. I found it to be pretty weird." She finished simply.

"D...do you think that Loraine...could’ve undergone reawakening?" Alice asked with a tremble in her voice, her hands trembling at the thought. Beatrice’s eyes widened at such a stupid suggestion, a laugh bursting from her throat as she found the possibility of such a thing to be utterly silly.

"Don’t be silly Alice, that girl has been a failed awakener all her life, I doubt waking up from her short nap practically did anything." Beatrice said to her, to which Alice breathed out a sigh of relief, the weight from her shoulders disappearing.

"R...right, how stupid of me to even say that." She muttered under her voice, but she couldn’t help but feel a little worried.

’Even so...why does my heart feel so uneasy?’
