Chapter 5: Bunny Killer
The system’s words glimmered, and the whole world around Amon seemed to fade into nothingness.
[Welcome, Master, to the world of Nexus.]
A smile appeared on the fairy’s face as she gazed at Amon as though he were a precious jewel.
Then, her cute, pouty pink lips parted.
"Hi, how may I address you?"
Her words pulled Amon out of the daze brought about by his system.
He glanced up at her, then hesitated for a moment before giving his real name.
"Amon."
"Alright, Amon, welcome to the Sanctuary of Light."
As she spoke, the starlight around them shimmered softly, as though agreeing with her words.
She paused, allowing them to sink in before continuing.
"Do you wish to partake in the Newbie Trial?"
"Newbie Trial?" Amon asked in confusion, his voice cracking slightly and betraying the perplexity he had felt ever since entering Nexus.
This wasn’t what he had read about on the forums.
Knowledge of Nexus wasn’t much of a secret. Anyone with basic computer skills could scour the internet and find information about it.
Naturally, based on everything Amon had read, once a player entered the game, they would be given the option to design their character template and choose a class before being sent to the starter village.
’Why does everything seem so different with me?’
Realizing that everything had started after consuming the Nexus Fruit, Amon gradually calmed his racing heart.
After a brief moment of contemplation, he nodded.
He knew that trials could provide rewards beneficial to a player’s attributes and stats. As such, he was curious about what the Newbie Trial might offer.
The fairy smiled sweetly.
"New Mission: Slay 100 bunnies to obtain 100 reputation points."
Her voice sounded almost robotic.
"That’s it?"
Amon was slightly dumbfounded.
The reward seemed too good to be true.
Reputation points were incredibly valuable. They could be used to increase affinity with NPCs throughout the game.
Amon’s thoughts raced.
Soon, his eyes lit up.
No wonder it was called a Newbie Trial.
With 100 reputation points, obtaining hidden missions would become significantly easier, allowing him to gain an advantage over other players from the very beginning.
A smile appeared on his face.
"I accept the mission."
The moment the words left his mouth, the surrounding landscape vanished.
A vast grassland spanning dozens of meters appeared beneath his feet.
Scattered across it were white, fluffy creatures with twitching noses and drooping ears, lazily nibbling on patches of grass.
Amon glanced at the cute little creatures and almost didn’t feel like killing them anymore.
Almost.
Without hesitation, he raised his foot toward the bunny standing beside him and then...
Crunch!
The sickening sound of bones breaking echoed across the quiet field.
Every bunny’s ears twitched instantly.
Then, in eerie unison, they turned their glowing red eyes toward Amon.
’Oh my god...’
Heads suddenly poked out from beneath nearby shrubs.
Only then did Amon realize their true number wasn’t one hundred.
There were at least two hundred.
They stared at him with glowing red eyes filled with hatred.
Then they charged.
It resembled a stampede. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
Amon glanced at the sea of bunnies rushing toward him and immediately threw a punch.
Fortunately, he had learned several martial arts self-defense techniques at school. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
The bunnies couldn’t attack him all at once, allowing him to maintain a defensive position.
Besides, these were merely weak Tier 0 creatures.
They shouldn’t pose much of a threat.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
His sharp, precise strikes landed on the heads of charging bunnies, sending them flying repeatedly.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The area around Amon became packed with fluffy bodies trying to bite through his clothes and chew on his legs as he continuously unleashed kicks and punches.
The fierce battle between one man and an army of bunnies lasted for more than an hour before finally subsiding.
"Congratulations on completing the Newbie Trial. Please create a character profile and proceed to the World of Nexus."
The fairy floated nearby with a pleasant smile.
The remaining bunnies had been completely immobilized.
Their glowing red eyes still glared hatefully at Amon.
A chill ran down his spine beneath those murderous stares.
However, he didn’t regret what he had done.
Amon’s system screen flickered and displayed a new panel.
[Character Panel.]
[Name: ?] [Level 3: (100/2000)]
[Class: ?]
[Talent: Prefix Extraction]
[Strength: 5]
[Physique: 5]
[Spirit: 5]
[Agility: 7]
[Attack Power: 20]
[Free Stat Points: 10]
Just as he had read online, every player received ten free stat points at the beginning of the game during character creation.
Naturally, one had to be cautious when distributing those points.
The allocation could significantly influence the effectiveness of a chosen class.
For example, a mage would benefit far more from Spirit than Strength or Agility, while warriors and assassins generally favored physical attributes.
Amon glanced over his stats briefly.
He hadn’t yet decided what class he wanted to choose, so he wasn’t sure where to assign the points.
’System?’
The bluish-gold screen shimmered faintly, signaling that it was listening.
’Can I assign my stat points later?’
Amon asked curiously.
He knew ordinary players couldn’t do that.
However, since his interface originated from the system rather than Nexus itself, perhaps things were different.
Just as he suspected, the screen glimmered.
[Yes. Free stat points may be distributed at your convenience.]
Amon nodded excitedly and finally sighed in relief.
’There are still perks to having a system.’
[Player, please choose a name.]
The system interrupted once more.
’Hmm...’
Amon rubbed his chin.
’I choose... Weaver.’
The system immediately recorded the information.
[There are notifications which you haven’t opened. Do you wish to explore them?]
’There are?’
Amon was taken aback and quickly gave the command.
Instantly, the system flooded his vision with new messages.
[Ding! Killed a Tier 0 bunny. Do you wish to extract?]
[Ding! Killed a Tier 0 bunny. Do you wish to extract?]
[Ding! Killed a Tier 0 bunny. Do you wish to extract?]
The endless ringing nearly made Amon dizzy.
’Yes... ex-extract!’
The notifications immediately stopped, finally granting him a moment of peace.
[Please come into contact with the object you wish to extract in order to perform extraction.]
The system advised.
Amon rubbed his forehead, trying to dispel the lingering dizziness.
Throughout all of this, the fairy merely watched him curiously.
She possessed no true intelligence.
However, according to her programming, there were certain players who had to be given the utmost respect and required little assistance from Nexus itself.
She understood that Amon was one of those players.
At least, that was the conclusion her programming had reached based on the strange feeling he gave off.
As such, despite all of his odd behavior, she simply continued watching with wide, curious eyes.
Those eyes widened further as Amon crouched beside one of the dead bunnies.
Blood soaked the surrounding grass and soil as he reached out and touched it.
Interested in what he intended to do, her lips parted slightly.
Meanwhile, a chime echoed in Amon’s mind.
[Ding! Extraction Failed! Please proceed to the next creature!]
Amon’s lips twitched.
’If it was going to fail, why did you ask me to extract in the first place?’
He was already irritated from the notification barrage earlier.
Still, curiosity won out.
What exactly could be extracted from these creatures?
[Ding! Extraction Failed! Please proceed to the next creature!]
’System, are you fucking with me?’
No response came.
A vein bulged faintly on Amon’s forehead.
Suppressing the urge to curse aloud, he moved to the next bunny.
[Ding! Extraction Failed! Please proceed to the next creature!]
...
[Ding! Extraction Failed! Please proceed to the next creature!]
...
[Ding! Extraction Failed! Please proceed to the next creature!]
The only thing filling Amon’s mind after touching ninety-nine dead bunnies was disappointment.
Just as he assumed the hundredth bunny would produce the same result, a different notification appeared.
[Ding! Extraction Successful!]
[Congratulations! You have extracted a Fragment of the Divine!]
’Wait... what?’
Amon froze.
For a brief moment, he was too stunned to think.
However, before he could fully process the notification, the endless star-filled space around him began to tremble violently.
The stars flickered.
The heavens rumbled.
And the entire Sanctuary of Light shook as though something impossible had just occurred.
