Chapter 137: Scapegoat

The explosion shook the entire valley and the area around it.

Students that were hunting paused and turned their heads toward the direction of the explosion. Although they did not know what kind of explosion that was, they knew that it was dangerous and not something they could handle.

Noah looked at the direction of the explosion and could not help but feel shivers down his spine. He recognized that direction as where Desther and Lexie had gone. He fetched his phone and immediately tried to message the two of them. Receiving no reply, even after a few minutes had passed.

In the main base, the teachers and guards stationed looked toward the direction of the explosion almost at the same time.

They looked at each other and immediately arrived at a startling conclusion.

’Self-destruction...’

The higher-ups were immediately informed, and in no time, a team of Tier 2 and Tier 3 Awakened Professionals were dispatched to check what was going on.

...

Lexie’s injuries were no less than his.

Like him, some part of her body was burned from the explosion.

Her body was bare on top of him; he could see her defining curves with his naked eye. Her face and hair, though, remained untouched. The burnt marks on her neck, back, and arms seemed to only add to the aesthetics of a valiant face of beauty amidst a chaotic war.

"Are you alright?"

The first instinct she had when she recovered from the shock was to question his current situation.

She did not care about her appearance; she did not care about the position she was in.

All she knew was that Desther saved her from that explosion, and for that, he deserved to be taken care of.

Seeing his burned face and body, her unblemished face turned into one of horror and worry. Her hand immediately reached toward her waist, getting that Healing Potion she bought last night from the main base.

However, when she realized that she could not feel anything, she finally decided to look where her hands were and finally noticed the missing Space Bag tied to her waist.

"The Space Bags were burned..."

Desther’s voice pulled her back to the present.

Desther had seen her Space Bag burning to cinders earlier. Even his Space Bag containing a lot of items was not spared from the heat.

"Don’t worry, I’ll heal." Seeing the worry on her face, Desther could only offer some words.

Hearing that, Lexie finally heaved a sigh of relief, believing his words wholeheartedly.

She finally twisted her own body, creating some distance away from Desther.

It was only then that she noticed that her upper body was almost bare, a part of her chest almost exposed if not for the remaining cotton that did not burn to cover it up.

She glanced down and immediately covered her chest with her burnt arm, her face burning not from the heat, but because of her embarrassing situation.

Nevertheless, she recovered quickly and looked up at Desther, only to see him having his eyes away from her.

A smile gently tugged on her lips as she reached out her other hand to check his condition.

"Are you sure you’re okay?"

She asked once again, seeing his severe condition. Her expression was dazed as she looked at him.

Upon a closer look, she finally noticed that his burnt marks were indeed healing.

"Yeah, just a little rest will do."

Desther nodded, his head and gaze turning toward her as he felt her hand on his chest.

"How about you?"

He finally asked, pulling her out from her daze.

She retracted her hand and nodded her head softly.

"I’ll recover as well." She could also tell that her body was now slowly healing. Although not as swift as Desther, she knew that she would be able to pull through it.

One thing to note was that the aching pain on her back had already disappeared. From the looks of it, eliminating that Shadow Monster also meant eliminating whatever substance it left behind on the wounds it caused.

Lexie finally stood up away from Desther’s top. Her thighs were exposed in front of him, yet Lexie did not feel the need to hide away from Desther. Although she felt shy about it, she endured the embarrassment she felt as she extended her hand to help Desther get up.

Desther stared at her hands for a brief moment before accepting her good gesture, allowing her to pull himself up.

Standing right beside her, Lexie finally saw the extent of damage behind him.

Worry began to settle on her face again, but knowing that Desther would heal in due time, she got rid of her needless worry and instead focused on the present.

The two of them looked around and noticed the devastation caused by the massive explosion. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

This was the first time they had seen and experienced such an explosion in person, and they did not enjoy it all.

If not for the fact that they were both strong Awakened Professionals, they would have already perished at the hands of that Shadow Monster by now.

"We should get out of here," Desther muttered under his breath upon seeing the destruction the Shadow Monster had caused.

That explosion was quite loud. The main base should have already been alerted by this incident, and it was a foregone conclusion that they were already on their way here to investigate what had happened.

Desther doesn’t want to be here when that happens.

As if sensing his thought, Lexie nodded her head but offered something he could not refuse.

"Well, it looks like I’m going to be your scapegoat this time around as well." A playful grin surfaced on her face, knowing that Desther would not deny her claim.

"That would be a good idea."

If someone admitted to doing something, investigations about it would probably stop. Knowing that it was Lexie who ’caused’ this explosion would also mean that questions would focus entirely on her, saving him from endless troubles.

Side by side, the two walked away from the site of the explosion, acting as if the devastation behind them was something they were not part of.
