Chapter 1114: Chapter 1085: The Woman Who Came Calling

"Meisai! Is there really no way?" Frances asked Meisai again, in an inconspicuous tavern. She looked so haggard, losing her original brilliance.

"The informer has solid evidence, every single day’s testimony could send your father to the electric chair. If possible, I can at most get him a life sentence, nothing lighter," Meisai, disheveled, slouched in the chair with a cigarette in hand. There was no noticeable expression on his face, yet he avoided looking directly into Frances’s eyes. He was helpless, this matter seemed to have gotten quite serious. It appeared to be a human-made result, someone wanted to bring down Casabell Genovis, so from the start, they had spread the rumors everywhere.

"No, you must have a way, right?" Frances still refused to give up, her shining eyes looked so sorrowful.

"Frances, this time I am powerless, many eyes saw him holding a submachine gun, leading a large group into Lucchesi’s territory!"

"But, he didn’t kill Augusto!" Frances defended.

"What you say is useless, and there are detailed records in the evidence sent by the informer, and they can be verified. Frances, it’s not the police who want to do something to your father now, someone wants your father to never get out of prison."

"Who is it?" Meisai shrugged.

"Perhaps your father offended someone!"

"Robert, it must be him, he wants my father’s position, it’s all his doing. There’s a family meeting tonight, I must ask the Godfather face to face!"

"Frances!" Meisai tried to call back the frenzied woman, but she had already left the tavern without looking back.

In the swirling glass, the renowned family elder still wore pajamas and stayed in prison; from obtaining the actual evidence to the arrest, the process lasted just a short hour. In front of the evidence, Casabell constantly maintained silence, perhaps he knew better than anyone what was going on.

Taking a sip of wine, among the five Italian Mafia families, two were wiped out, one severely injured lying in the hospital uncertain if they will regain consciousness, another waiting for sentencing in prison, leaving only an unpredictable, seemingly unimpressive young Godfather standing alone at the top. This situation fits someone’s design so well, operating according to that plan, but appears overly smooth.

Xia Xue watched the unfamiliar woman in front of her; she wasn’t a stunning beauty but rather someone with a unique charm. Though she looked rather juvenile, her freckles stood out prominently on her face. Crow followed beside Xia Xue, maliciously baring teeth and growling at the suddenly appeared woman.

Frances felt like she might have come to the wrong place; she had heard of this woman, but facing her for real, she appeared less composed. "My name is Frances Nubia Genovis, I want to see Mr. Xiao."

It was a polite girl, Xia Xue smiled lightly, seeming her own man’s charm was indeed considerable. "May I ask why you are looking for him?"

Frances glanced at the Oriental woman in front of her, then nodded. "I can’t tell you; perhaps only Mr. Xiao can help with this matter."

"Well then, please wait a moment!"

Xia Xue crossed the corridor, found Xiao Lin sunbathing near the backyard. Recently, he looked much better, capable of walking without a cane. The Black Doctor held a small notebook, always lingering beside Xiao Lin, studying something, often casting enigmatic glances at Xiao Lin, as though deeply focused on someone beloved, his eyes gleaming.

"Stare at my face until it turns into a beehive!" Xiao Lin joked while moving his legs and arms, his straight back shows no sign of injury, except for his pale face.

"You must tell me if you are truly a freak!" The Black Doctor believed that someone should only walk a month later, yet it’s been less than a week. This had surpassed the Black Doctor’s understanding range; he insisted the man wasn’t human.

"What do you want me to tell you?" Xiao Lin laughed while looking at the Black Doctor; such conversations happened several times daily. The one asking never tired, while the one answering did it out of sheer boredom. Were it not for a woman’s enforced prohibition, he’d have been out long ago.

"Are you truly a human, not some other creature?" Here it came again, Xiao Lin laughed aloud.

"You can wait for me to die, then conduct an autopsy experiment!"

"I might die before you do, but how can you recover so, so rapidly?"

Xiao Lin cocked his head, pondering. "I really wish to know why!" This was the truth; he too wanted to know what was happening. If it were merely a blood issue, the Black Doctor would have known long ago; clearly, it wasn’t just that.

"Lin!" Xia Xue stepped onto the soft grass, Xiao Lin reached out to embrace her, planting a deep kiss on her forehead. "Do you know a girl named Frances Nubia Genovis?"

"Casabell’s daughter, how do you know this person?" Reluctantly releasing Xia Xue, Xiao Lin’s dark eyes seemed to narrate something.

"She’s waiting in our hall, wishing to see you." Xia Xue turned her head petulantly. "Did you have something with her? Like getting engaged with her just like Hua Qingyi?"

"I smell the scent of vinegar, just right to use for tonight’s sweet and sour ribs for you." Xiao Lin laughed heartily; he adored seeing a woman get jealous.

"Then you can wait to drink northwest wind!" The crow tilted its head, nuzzling Xia Xue’s calf, as if apologizing to its mistress on behalf of its master. "Look, even the crow is more likable than you."

Comparing himself to the crow again, Xiao Lin sighed helplessly at the glaring crow before explaining. "If I’m not mistaken, her reason for coming is likely related to Casabell, her father." Though Xia Xue had always kept him grounded in this large villa, messages from outside still flowed freely every day.

"I don’t think it’s necessary for you to meddle in this matter." Xia Xue pursed her lips; in some respects, she sided with Chopin despite being shocked by the man’s identity. She had a thorough understanding of the Xiao family’s model of succession, which didn’t adhere to moral principles, as long as their own men weren’t like that.

"Don’t keep them waiting." Xiao Lin took Xia Xue’s hand and led her back to that small living room. Frances was waiting anxiously — time was a luxury for her.

"Can I talk to you alone?" Upon seeing Xiao Lin holding Xia Xue’s hand, Frances made a slightly rude request.

"There’s nothing I need to hide from my wife, Miss Francis." Xiao Lin pulled Xia Xue onto the three-seat sofa. "You’ve come for your father, but as far as I’m aware, the police have substantial evidence against him, making acquittal nearly impossible."

"I know I can’t save him through conventional legal means, so I came to find you."

"I think you’re looking for the wrong person! I..."

"I know you’re the heir of the Xiao family. Can you help me in this capacity? If Father were to be sent to prison, his chances of being assassinated inside are high. I know someone wants him dead!"

"You’ve known who I am from the start, haven’t you? On the transport at the airport, at the youth hostel."

"Yes, yes!" Frances lowered her head, not daring to meet Xiao Lin’s eyes. She wanted to explain that it wasn’t her intention, but Jessica’s... Thinking of Jessica, Frances sighed deeply.

Xia Xue nudged Xiao Lin; this girl seemed truly pitiful, and there was no hint of a Mafia vibe about her, just like an ordinary neighborhood girl. Appearances could deceive kind-hearted people. Xiao Lin patted Xia Xue’s hand, signaling her not to speak.

"Mr. Xiao, if you can help me this time, I’ll agree to anything."

"How do you want me to help?"

"Help me rescue my father."

"You could ask your cousin, Meisai, isn’t he the chief of the Palermo police? If he could just turn a blind eye, find someone to substitute, serve a few years, and then get a single cell in the prison, he could come out after a few months."

"Meisai refused my request." Frances was slightly stunned; she widened her eyes, looking at the seemingly smirking Xiao Lin. Her relationship with Meisai was secretive to the point where no third party knew, yet when it came from this man’s mouth, she acknowledged it.

"Even when the police chief is powerless, how can I, an ordinary citizen, achieve it? Miss Francis, you’ve really found the wrong person." Xiao Lin shook his head, expressing his helplessness and sympathy.

"Wait, let’s make a deal!" Frances called out softly; she was a girl who thoroughly understood etiquette and wouldn’t act hysterical in any situation, her every move was so cultured it showed how Casabell loved his daughter. "I believe Mr. Xiao will definitely be satisfied."

"Darling, prepare us some sides; I’m sure our guest has plenty to say." Xiao Lin patted Xia Xue’s backside, winking at her.

"Miss Francis, please stay for dinner with us!" Xia Xue rolled her eyes at Xiao Lin, as if saying, "You’re a bad man."

"I have a family meeting to attend tonight!" Frances shook her head.

"Lovely Miss, you can skip such a meeting."

"You did it on purpose!" Xia Xue half-knelt on Xiao Lin’s abdomen, her hands restlessly drawing circles on his chest. Her beautiful lips slightly parted as she accused Xiao Lin of being a little schadenfreude today.

"You could tell that?" Xiao Lin placed his hands behind his head, partially closing his eyes.

"You clearly could help her, so why make things difficult!" Xia Xue twisted her hips, causing Xiao Lin to inhale sharply. (To be continued. If you like this work, please visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendations and monthly tickets, your support is my greatest motivation.)
