Chapter 284: Chapter 284: Miraculously Fast Recovery
Zheng Jianjun looked at Li Yuan, took a deep breath, and said, "Little Yuan, you’ve made a mistake, one that has lasted for nearly twenty years. I can’t save you. You have to face the consequences for what you’ve done."
Li Yuan retorted angrily, "That’s not what you told me last night! You said Dad and Big Brother would consider it, that they’d protect me! I’m your wife, how can you do this to me? How can the Zheng family do this to me? Yes, I took Li Wan’s place, but in all these years, I know I’ve never wronged the Zheng family. I even bore you two sons, and this is how your family treats me?"
"Those are two different matters." Mr. Zheng’s voice came from the entrance of the Li home. He looked at Li Yuan sternly. "You did something wrong, so you must accept the punishment. Otherwise, you’d be doing a great injustice to the innocent person you harmed."
At Mr. Zheng’s words, Li Yuan couldn’t help but flinch. She turned her head toward the entrance and saw Mr. Zheng and Zheng Jian Country standing in the doorway.
"HAHAHAHAHA! So last night was just a stalling tactic." Li Yuan finally understood. The Zheng family had never intended to help her. "How wonderful of you, Zheng family! You found out my secret, so you use it to curry favor with the Li family! Using me as a stepping stone for your own success! The Zheng family will get what it deserves!"
Li Yuan glanced around, seeing nothing she could use as a weapon. Furious, she slapped Zheng Jianjun across the face. "You’ll all get what’s coming to you..."
Before Li Yuan could finish, the police officers stepped forward and restrained her.
Li Yuan struggled with all her might but couldn’t break free from the officers’ hold. She burst into a furious tirade, cursing everyone. She hated the Zheng family for their ingratitude, hated the Li family for their cold-heartedness, and resented Li Wan and Su Qing for not just staying put and instead coming out to ruin her. She even hated Li Aiguo for cracking under interrogation and confessing everything. She hated them all, feeling only that she was the one who had been wronged.
Mr. Li paid no mind to Li Yuan’s cursing. He nodded to the police officers. "Thank you for your trouble."
"You’re too kind, sir," the lead officer said, saluting Mr. Li. Then he led Li Yuan back to the station. The case required further processing, and many details still needed to be handled, but there was no escaping the consequences for Li Yuan’s crimes.
After the police had left, Mr. Li said to Mr. Zheng, "Old Zheng, come and have a seat."
Mr. Zheng sighed and sat down.
Mr. Li said, "I must thank your family for this."
If the Zheng family had really decided to help Li Yuan, the final outcome probably wouldn’t have changed much. Still, with their involvement, things would have become much more complicated. Delays can breed unforeseen trouble, and who knew what might have changed along the way? The whole situation would have been far trickier to handle.
Mr. Zheng said, "What Li Yuan did is simply impossible to condone. I was merely following my conscience."
Mr. Li nodded without a word, but ’he would remember the kindness the Zheng family had shown. As for the two boys, Zheng Jiang and Zheng Hai, although they were Li Yuan’s sons, they were also grandsons of the Zheng family. They were still young and completely unaware of the situation. Out of respect for the Zhengs, the Li family wouldn’t do anything to the children. What they would become in the future, however, was up to the Zheng family to handle.’
Mr. Zheng then asked, "How is that girl of yours doing now?"
Everyone present understood he was asking about Li Wan.
Mr. Li sighed. "She’s still in the hospital receiving treatment. To this day, the poor child still doesn’t know the truth about her birth... She doesn’t even recognize us. SIGH..."
Beside him, Mrs. Li couldn’t help but wipe away tears. Li Huan quickly tried to comfort her, "Grandma, our youngest aunt will definitely get better."
The younger members of the Li family had remained silent throughout the ordeal; it wasn’t their place to speak with the elders present. Inwardly, however, they were all utterly disgusted by Li Yuan’s actions. This was especially true for Li Huan. She was good friends with Su Qing and loathed Li Yuan with a passion, even feeling regret for ever having been on good terms with her.
"Yes, she’ll definitely get better," Mrs. Li said, nodding. "We’ll go see your youngest aunt tomorrow."
"Okay."
Meanwhile, Li Wan, the very person on the Li family’s minds, was showing clear improvement over the past couple of days. She was even starting to feel hunger.
This made Gu Xinsheng absolutely ecstatic. Before, Li Wan had no sense of hunger or fullness. She would eat if given food and simply starve if not, never saying a word. But now, she was actually starting to request specific dishes.
"I want red-braised pork, and I want roast duck," Li Wan said, blinking her wide, innocent eyes at Su Qing and Gu Xinsheng.
"Yes, yes! I’ll go buy it right now, right now!" Gu Xinsheng was overjoyed. Huo Yafeng had already conducted an intelligence test on Li Wan, and her mental acuity was starting to recover. Her IQ was now at the level of a five or six-year-old child. Though she hadn’t regained her memories, she was no longer so fearful of people. It was clear, however, that she felt closest to Su Qing and Gu Xinsheng.
This was enough to leave Huo Yafeng stunned. After all, it had only taken about three or four days for Li Wan to go from her first spoken words to her current level of mental recovery.
You couldn’t even call it a rapid recovery; it was simply miraculous!
And so, when the members of the Li family arrived at the hospital, the first thing they saw was Li Wan with a duck leg in one hand and a spoon in the other, happily scooping up a piece of red-braised pork to eat.
