Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Trafficking Organization
By the time Ji Qinghe sensed the danger, it was too late. A worker in the crowd suddenly went berserk, pulling a knife from his pocket and lunging at Jiang Li.
For a moment, everything seemed to freeze under her horrified gaze.
But Jiang Li dodged with surprising speed. Not only that, but she also executed a flawless shoulder throw, her movements far too practiced for a rookie.
Ji Qinghe nearly choked, struggling to catch her breath. Staring at Jiang Li, who had just subdued the attacker, she hurriedly asked, "Jiang Li, are you okay?"
Jiang Li shook her head at Ji Qinghe, but she was just as baffled. ’Since when do I have skills like these?’
’It seems like ever since I started having these dreams, my mind has gotten sharper. Could it be related to them?’
Jiang Li’s eyes shifted subtly. She made a mental note: ’If this happens again, I need to test it out more.’
Zhao Shuo snapped back to his senses and rushed forward to handcuff the man. "Take him away!"
Soon, the group arrived at the police station.
When they got there, Zhou Tiancheng was already arranging for Chen Jianqiang’s interrogation. But no matter how they questioned him, the guy insisted he didn’t have any USB drive and swore they had the wrong person.
When Jiang Li and Ji Qinghe arrived, they were brought up to speed on the situation.
Zhou Tiancheng stared at Jiang Li, astonished. ’She’s that skilled?’
"Could he have hidden it somewhere?" Jiang Li asked Zhou Tiancheng in a low voice.
Zhou Tiancheng found it strange looking at Jiang Li, who seemed afraid of him. She was perfectly relaxed when facing Ji Qinghe and Zhao Shuo.
But with him, she was incredibly cautious.
’Am I too serious?’
’I haven’t even done anything, have I?’
"Tch. If we’re just making stuff up, I could say he ate it," a grating voice cut in.
The group looked toward the doorway. A man in a black overcoat was leaning against the frame, arms crossed, a mocking look on his face as he stared at Jiang Li.
"Xingye, don’t be like that. Bold hypotheses, careful verification," Ji Qinghe said, shooting a helpless glance at the troublemaker in the doorway.
Lu Xingye was a student at the Criminal Police Academy. His family had also been in law enforcement, but they had died in the line of duty.
Lu Xingye had a sharp mind for criminal investigation and often came to the station to help out.
But he was young and a bit hot-headed.
Hearing the name, Jiang Li’s eyes flickered, and she looked up at him.
"I know you. The great detective Lu Xingye. Twenty-two years old. Your parents were both in the detective division. You also have a sister who suddenly disappeared three years ago."
The arrogant young man’s brow furrowed. He straightened up and stared at her. "Jiang Li, is it? I don’t know where you heard all that about me.
But solving cases isn’t just about talk. We’re still gathering clues, and every word you say could throw off the investigators’ train of thought."
Ji Qinghe pulled on Lu Xingye’s arm. "Xiao Ye, what are you doing? If it weren’t for Jiang Li, this case would have been completely buried."
After all, everyone was dead. If Jiang Li hadn’t been there, no one would have reported it, and it might have been written off as a simple construction accident.
"It’s fine. I spoke out of turn. I’m not an expert in this field, nor do I have the knowledge for it. But if you need my help with anything, feel free to ask me anytime."
Jiang Li sat down to the side, her expression calm, showing no sign of annoyance at Lu Xingye’s jab.
Lu Xingye glanced at the seated Jiang Li, then looked up at Zhou Tiancheng. "Brother Zhou, do you need me to go in?"
"Go ahead." Zhou Tiancheng nodded. Lu Xingye excelled at psychological tactics and had sharp instincts in that area; letting him handle it was a good idea.
Lu Xingye glanced at Jiang Li before getting up and heading inside.
Jiang Li lowered her head, stared at the tips of her shoes, and involuntarily sank into her own world.
Ji Qinghe was actually very curious as to how Jiang Li knew Lu Xingye.
The investigation continued. They began running DNA to identify the deceased, but both Chen Jianqiang and Wang Batian were tight-lipped.
One claimed he didn’t have a USB drive, and the other said he knew nothing about it, that it was just a normal construction job.
Jiang Li sat on the sofa as the world around her seemed to fall silent. Her expression was vacant, but her mind was racing furiously.
’They ran into Chen Jianqiang on the way. In such a short time, he couldn’t have destroyed it, and he couldn’t have just tossed it away carelessly. He must have hidden it somewhere.’
’Also, this wasn’t just a simple car accident.’
’See if there’s anything usable... anything useful?’
As this thought struck her, Jiang Li quickly looked up. Across from her, Zhao Shuo, who had been watching over her, shot to his feet, his voice filled with unconcealable excitement.
"Miss Jiang, have you thought of something new?"
"I just remembered. Right as I was waking up, I heard a voice say, ’See if there’s anything usable.’"
Zhao Shuo looked at the previous statement he’d taken from Jiang Li. It was recorded there, too.
"Okay, Miss Jiang. Don’t worry, our people are already conducting a thorough search."
Just then, Lu Xingye walked out from the interrogation room.
"Xingye, any progress?" Zhao Shuo asked, turning his head.
Lu Xingye nodded. "Yeah. He ditched it in the police car. Here’s the statement."
Zhao Shuo gave him an admiring thumbs-up. Before Jiang Li, Lu Xingye was the only one he truly admired. After all, despite his youth, he had already helped them catch several suspects.
Lu Xingye sat down nearby, and Zhao Shuo hurried off to find the item.
The sound of hurried footsteps echoed through the police station.
Sipping hot water, Lu Xingye turned his head to watch Jiang Li. Her expression was calm, her fingers were picking at each other unconsciously, her entire body was tense...
"Are you... practicing your psychology on me?"
Jiang Li’s sudden question made Lu Xingye jump.
His heart hammered in his chest. A few seconds later, he regained his composure and frowned in confusion at the innocent look on Jiang Li’s face.
’If someone told him she wasn’t mentally ill, he really wouldn’t believe it.’
Jiang Li looked up at Lu Xingye, her expression normal, and asked directly, "What do you want to ask?"
She was so direct that Lu Xingye suddenly had nothing to ask. Neither of them spoke.
Time ticked by, and Jiang Li leaned back on the sofa, dozing off for a while.
Lu Xingye looked at Zhao Shuo as he walked over. "What’s up?"
"Every time Miss Jiang wakes up, she has a new clue." Zhao Shuo handed him Jiang Li’s statement.
Lu Xingye frowned as he read the report. ’Isn’t this just nonsense?’
Ji Qinghe and Zhou Tiancheng were working overtime, searching for related information and trying to recover the data from the USB drive.
"The driver’s name is Cheng Kaicheng. He’s twenty-eight, and his family owns a company, so they have some influence.
After hitting the victims, Cheng Kaicheng contacted Wang Batian and gave him a million yuan to clean up the crime scene.
Wang Batian said that when he arrived, there was only blood on the ground—no bodies or limbs.
Chen Jianqiang is the developer for that area. Cheng Kaicheng had him destroy the surveillance footage, and he was just about to deliver it to Cheng Kaicheng when he ran into Captain Zhou.
The USB drive was found in the gap under the seat of the police car.
We’re still verifying the victims’ identities, so that might take a while longer."
"It’s all thanks to Miss Jiang. That Cheng Kaicheng is a monster. We’ve already collected DNA from eleven different people. So many people..." The officer reporting the situation had an angry expression on his face.
They struggled for half their lives and finally got a place of their own, only for the construction to be abandoned. They moved in despite the risks, only to be hit by a car on their way home.
Zhao Shuo looked at Zhou Tiancheng. "By the way, Captain Zhou, this case may be solved, but according to the information Miss Jiang provided, there’s also a trafficking ring.
Could the bodies have already been moved by that group, and..."
Zhao Shuo didn’t finish his sentence, but everyone understood what he meant.
Zhao Shuo’s tone suddenly shifted. "But Miss Jiang has fallen asleep again. Maybe she’ll have another new clue when she wakes up!"
