Chapter 59: Chapter 59: The Deputy Chief’s Cordial Invitation

Ji Qinghe was about to refuse, but Zhou Tiancheng stopped her. "Deputy Chief, we should ask Jiang Li what she thinks about this."

Xu Yongkang paused for a moment, then smiled. "Alright. In that case, ask Jiang Li and set up a time."

"Okay." Zhou Tiancheng smiled as he watched Xu Yongkang leave.

"Tiancheng." Ji Qinghe frowned at Zhou Tiancheng.

Zhou Tiancheng shook his head at her, signaling that they would talk about it when they got back home.

Back home, Zhou Tiancheng drew the curtains and turned to look at her. "Qinghe, go find Jiang Li tomorrow and talk to her.

If the deputy chief is the mole, we need to get some leverage on him."

"Are you saying we should use Jiang Li as bait? I won’t allow it." Ji Qinghe stood up. ’That’s too dangerous. What if something really happens to Jiang Li?’

Zhou Tiancheng hugged her comfortingly. "Don’t be so anxious. Just go ask Jiang Li what she thinks first. If we don’t catch the mole, all of Jiang Li’s movements will be exposed."

As long as the mole remained, everything they did was at high risk of exposure.

After much hesitation, Ji Qinghe finally nodded. "Okay, I’ll go ask Jiang Li tomorrow."

The next day, Ji Qinghe, who was on leave, arrived at Jiang Li’s front door. She glanced at Lu Xingye’s house next door, then back at Jiang Li’s, recalling that Lu Xingye had mentioned helping Jiang Li find a place. ’So this is what he meant,’ she thought.

Ji Qinghe walked up and knocked on the door. "Jiang Li, it’s me."

After a few minutes of waiting, Jiang Li opened the door. Seeing Ji Qinghe standing there, she asked, "Officer Ji, what brings you here?"

She had actually been planning to go to the police station to find them that afternoon.

"Jiang Li, I came today because there’s something I need to talk to you about."

Ji Qinghe followed Jiang Li inside, taking in the small, cozy house. She thought it was quite nice.

Jiang Li showed Ji Qinghe to a seat and poured her a glass of water.

"Jiang Li, about what happened yesterday... Tiancheng and I suspect there’s a leak inside the department." Ji Qinghe looked at her with a grave expression, clutching the glass of water.

If there wasn’t a mole, how could the other party have known Jiang Li’s schedule so quickly and accurately?

Listening to Ji Qinghe, Jiang Li nodded in agreement and looked up at her. "In that case, Officer Ji, do you have any suspects?"

Ji Qinghe lowered her eyes. ’This isn’t something I can just casually talk about.’ "Jiang Li, our deputy chief, Xu Yongkang, would like to treat you to a meal to thank you for your help with the case."

Jiang Li listened to Ji Qinghe’s words and understood the meaning behind them.

"I can do that."

Ji Qinghe looked at her, conflicted. "Jiang Li, you really shouldn’t have been dragged into this. Originally, Tiancheng wanted me to come today to tell you to lie low for a while.

We just didn’t expect things to be even worse than we imagined."

"It’s fine, Officer Ji. I wasn’t doing anything anyway. Besides, being busy makes me feel like my condition has improved."

Jiang Li grinned at Ji Qinghe.

Ji Qinghe was momentarily speechless, a pang of guilt washing over her. ’We’ve worked her so hard she’s even forgotten about being sick.’

"Let me ask Tiancheng then." Ji Qinghe stood up, walked to the window, and took out her phone to contact Zhou Tiancheng.

Jiang Li took out her own phone and looked at the string of messages. Lu Xingye and Huo Qing were still searching for any trace of Qiao Siyuan.

Wu Ming had volunteered to help her find the scumbag and bring him to justice.

Jiang Li rested her chin in her hand and glanced around. She couldn’t help but sigh. ’Little Li has abandoned me and gone into hiding again.’

She opened Wu Xueyan’s social media feed. The latest post was still a prenatal check-up report from before Qiao Siyuan was arrested.

After contacting Zhou Tiancheng, Ji Qinghe turned to Jiang Li. "Jiang Li, Tiancheng says the deputy chief’s side wants to do this as soon as possible.

So, he’s asking if you’re free tonight. Me, Tiancheng, and Zhao Shuo—we’ll all go with you."

Hearing Ji Qinghe’s voice, Jiang Li looked up and smiled at her. "It’s okay, Officer Ji. What if it’s not the deputy chief?"

Ji Qinghe sat down next to her. "It’s hard to say. Xu Yongkang has been the deputy chief for several years and has been holding in a lot of frustration. The chief is due for a promotion this year."

"Isn’t that a sure thing, then?" Once the chief is promoted, the deputy chief takes his place. ’There’s nothing to worry about.’

Ji Qinghe sighed. "It was supposed to be a sure thing, but not long ago, a new political commissar was parachuted in.

That commissar has some connections in high places..."

Jiang Li’s mouth fell open in surprise. A position he had waited for so long was suddenly snatched away by someone else. ’That does seem a bit suspicious.’

"I understand, Officer Ji. We’ll play it by ear when the time comes."

"Okay, I’ll head back for now." Ji Qinghe stood up and walked toward the door. She needed to go back and think of a plan to handle the situation.

Jiang Li saw Ji Qinghe off. As she went back inside, she glanced at the house next door, wondering if Sister Xingchen was home.

Jiang Li went back inside and curled up on her small sofa, reading the news on her phone. The bombing case was still under investigation, and there was still no news of Qiao Siyuan’s whereabouts.

Looking at the pictures of the explosion site, the coincidence was spine-chilling.

’Who on earth could be targeting me?’

Jiang Li fell into deep thought, mentally reviewing everyone she knew, one by one. Suddenly, she recalled a familiar face outside the courthouse.

Jiang Li shot up from her seat. ’Someone from the research institute?’

She clenched her fists in anger. Back then, Qiao Siyuan had sent her to the institute, where she endured half a month of inhuman torment. They only moved on to a new target when they could no longer find any trace of Little Li in her.

She seized the opportunity to escape from the institute and went to a hospital to get a certificate proving she did not have multiple personality disorder.

During that time, she could barely sleep at night. Later, her teachers and classmates all thought she was no different from a normal person.

But she always felt an emptiness inside. She thought she would never see Little Li again in this lifetime, but unexpectedly, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Jiang Li looked around her empty house. She stood up, intending to order takeout, but then she remembered what she had found in her food last time and gave up on the idea. Instead, she went downstairs to buy something to eat.

After eating, Jiang Li took a walk around the neighborhood and noticed that there were many strange people hanging around the police station.

’Looks like after tonight, I really will have to go lie low for a while.’

Jiang Li bought some snacks and went back home. In the afternoon, Ji Qinghe and Zhou Tiancheng came to pick her up personally.

This time, Zhou Tiancheng was driving a sedan. When they pulled up, Ji Qinghe got out and waved at her.

Jiang Li opened the back door and got in, greeting them. "Officer Zhou, Officer Ji."

"No need to be so formal. Let’s get going." Ji Qinghe turned her head and smiled at Jiang Li, who nodded in response.

The group arrived at Shengtang Restaurant. Zhou Tiancheng led the two women toward a private room upstairs, glancing back at Jiang Li as they reached the door.

Meeting his gaze, Jiang Li blinked in confusion. "Officer Zhou, do you need a pep talk?"

The corner of Zhou Tiancheng’s mouth twitched. A smile appeared on Ji Qinghe’s face, and the tension she had carried all the way there seemed to lessen.

Zhou Tiancheng pushed the door open and saluted. "Good evening, Deputy Chief."

"We’re not on duty now, no need to be so formal. Quick, sit, sit."

Jiang Li peeked out from behind Ji Qinghe and glanced at the people around the dinner table.

Zhao Shuo saw her and waved excitedly. Next to him were Fan Zhenkai and the others. Besides Xu Yongkang, she had met almost everyone there.

Xu Yongkang looked over at her and immediately stood up. "You must be Jiang Li. Quick, come and sit."
