Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Safe Landing

A wave of relief washed over Qiao Siyuan. "I’ll talk, I’ll talk. It was Jiang Li. She’s from the countryside, just like me.

At first, seeing her was like seeing myself, so I was nice to her, helped her out whenever I could, and showed her I cared. Eventually, Jiang Li agreed to be my girlfriend.

She had no idea what I was doing at first. Not until the day before our engagement party. I wanted to blow off some steam, but I never expected her to find out.

The next day, she just ran off and didn’t show up for the engagement. I originally thought, ’So what if she ran? It’s not like Jiang Li is a normal person anyway.’

But a month later, my child with Wu Xueyan was diagnosed with super-male syndrome. My mom knows Cao Tianwang, and he’s the real deal.

I’ve relied on him to get to where I am today. Master Cao told my mom that if I found someone, got her pregnant, and then swapped the fate of the child in her womb with my own, my child would be born normal.

I immediately thought of Jiang Li. She has social anxiety, doesn’t like to socialize, and her meek personality makes her easy to control.

Even if she died, no one would care. After all, she isn’t normal and has no family. No one would pay her any mind. But..."

Qiao Siyuan’s face twisted with rage as he grew agitated. "But that fucking bitch Jiang Li is the reason I got caught by the police! She even found the evidence I hid under the floor tiles!

And she somehow figured out where my new house was, even though I never told her any of that.

Right, and from the first moment I saw her in C City, I felt like something was off about her."

"C City?" The man paused, his cigarette halfway to his lips.

"Yeah. It was like she’d become a completely different person. She used to be so meek she’d do whatever you told her. But who knew she’d become so terrifying and incredibly strong.

When she talks to people, she’s as eerie as a ghost."

Qiao Siyuan gritted his teeth in hatred. Then, his eyes darted around as he looked at the man. "You guys were able to snatch me, so you must have a way to save me, right?

I don’t want to get taken back by the police. Help me this one time, and I’ll do anything you ask."

The man took a drag from his cigarette, mulling over Qiao Siyuan’s words. "How are those cops treating Jiang Li?"

"They’re treating her great. Especially this one guy, Lu Xingye. Seems like he’s taken a liking to that psycho. He even followed her all the way from C City to B City."

’Lu Xingye?’

The man waved his hand, signaling for his men to take Qiao Siyuan away, then turned around.

"Go investigate this Jiang Li. See if it’s her. If it is, bring her to me, no matter the cost."

The corners of the man’s mouth lifted into an intrigued smile. "Oh, and by the way, I want her alive."

’It would be a shame for someone so interesting to die.’

...

The moment Jiang Li got off the plane, she saw a long string of messages and missed calls on her phone.

Lu Xingye: [Let me know when you land, Jiang Li.]

Ji Qinghe: [Jiang Li, what time does your flight get in? I’m waiting for you at Exit C. Don’t go to the wrong one.]

Jiang Li looked around, pulling her mask and hat down tighter. ’Did something happen?’ she wondered.

She started walking toward Exit C, but she keenly sensed several people with unusual gazes staring at the arrivals gate.

Jiang Li took out her phone and typed, [Officer Ji, I’m going out through Exit A. I think your position has been compromised.]

Jiang Li changed direction and went into the restroom, checking the news on her phone. An explosion had rocked B City not long after she left, and Qiao Siyuan had been kidnapped.

Jiang Li tucked all of her hair into her hat and followed the largest crowd of people toward Exit A.

When Ji Qinghe saw Jiang Li’s message, she discreetly scanned her surroundings. She noticed a man leaning against a trash can near the exit, smoking, his gaze flickering toward them.

Ji Qinghe started the car, slammed on the gas, yanked the steering wheel, and sped away.

"SHIT! Dammit, we’ve been made!"

The man barely had time to react. He cursed under his breath and threw his cigarette to the ground.

"The police car just left. Did you guys see the target?"

"Negative."

"Could she have not taken a plane? What if she took a high-speed train or a private car?"

"The hell she did! Keep your damn eyes peeled! The boss said she was on a plane."

After getting away, Ji Qinghe called Jiang Li. The call connected almost immediately.

"Hello, Qinghe."

Ji Qinghe instantly breathed a sigh of relief. If Jiang Li could answer the phone, it meant she was safe.

"Let’s meet at the station. Stay safe."

"Okay."

Jiang Li didn’t chat long with Ji Qinghe; they hung up after just a few words.

"Young lady, where are you coming back from?"

Jiang Li looked up at the middle-aged driver. "I’m coming back from the hospital in City A. The doctor said I’m sick and don’t have long to live, so I came home to spend my last days with my family."

The driver froze for a second, then glanced at her in the rearview mirror. ’No wonder she’s all bundled up,’ he thought. ’She’s sick.’

"Well, I suppose that’s for the best in a way."

At a red light, Jiang Li glanced over discreetly. The driver was furiously tapping out a few words on his phone.

Jiang Li glanced outside. ’Even the taxi drivers have been bought off?’

"We’re here, miss. Don’t overthink things. Try to be happy."

"Okay. Thank you, sir."

Jiang Li grabbed her bag, got out, and took a picture of the license plate as the taxi drove away.

[Guys, I picked up a poor young girl today. Got a terminal illness, came home to be with her family. Man, life is so unpredictable.]

[Any of you pick up someone from B City? I got a few, but none of them matched the description.]

[Me neither. No idea who’s gonna end up with that two hundred thousand.]

When Jiang Li got home, she took out her phone to contact Ji Qinghe.

"Hello, Officer Ji. I’ve arrived home safely."

While on the phone, Jiang Li replied to the messages from Lu Xingye and the others.

"Good. I’m glad you’re home safe. Get some rest for now. We can talk about everything else tomorrow."

Back at the station, Ji Qinghe was still shaken. ’If Jiang Li hadn’t warned me,’ she thought, ’would there have been another explosion?’

Zhou Tiancheng looked at the returning Ji Qinghe and listened as she recounted what had happened at the airport.

"Who the hell are they? How did they get the information so fast and so accurately? They knew before we did."

Ji Qinghe clenched her fists and looked up at Zhou Tiancheng. "Could there be a mole?"

Zhou Tiancheng’s expression grew grim. If that were the case, things would get very difficult.

"Don’t spread this around for now. You’re on leave tomorrow. Go to Jiang Li’s house and find her."

Ji Qinghe nodded.

"Tiancheng, Qinghe! Congratulations, congratulations! I hear good things are on the way."

Seeing the newcomer, Zhou Tiancheng and Ji Qinghe quickly stood up and saluted. "Good to see you, Deputy Director."

"Hey, sit, sit. You two are the department’s greatest assets right now," Xu Yongkang said with a smile, looking at Zhou Tiancheng and Ji Qinghe.

"We were just doing our duty."

Xu Yongkang smiled and nodded at them. "By the way, that Jiang Li you mentioned—have her come by the station when she has time. She’s been a huge help to our department, so it’s only right that we thank her properly."
