Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Like Daughter, Like Parents
Zhang Zihang’s voice suddenly cut off. Looking at Lu Xingye in front of him, he was extremely puzzled. ’No, I have to stay calm.’
Luo Anan had said the police could never find out about this. Besides, he had been handling the aftermath and hadn’t noticed anything unusual these past few days.
’They might have a few clues, but I absolutely cannot panic now.’
"Luo Anan confessed. She told us everything, including how you and she sutured Li Yiming’s limbs to a pig’s."
Zhang Zihang’s breath hitched, and he instantly lost control. "That bitch Luo Anan! Didn’t we have an agreement?
That I’d just come in and be locked up for a few days, and this whole thing would blow over. But look at her, she went and confessed everything! Bitch!"
’They know so many details. If Luo Anan didn’t confess, what else could it be? That bitch actually backstabbed me.’
"Zhang Zihang, don’t you have anything you want to say?"
Zhang Zihang gritted his teeth. "What can I say? That maniac Luo Anan forced me! I just made an offhand comment.
Who knew she’d actually go and anesthetize Li Yiming and put him together with a pig.
Later, when I didn’t want to do it anymore, she threatened me. She said if I didn’t listen, she’d call the police and use her connections to ruin my career in the industry!
Right now, Li Yiming is still..."
Zhang Zihang’s head snapped up. ’Something’s not right!’
CLANG!
Jiang Li took out her pocket watch. Seeing his dazed expression, she began to question him. "Where is Li Yiming?"
"In my basement. The one Luo Anan had someone dig."
Lu Xingye quickly lowered his head and sent a message.
"Luo Anan said you were the one who suggested she experiment on Li Yiming. Why?"
A flash of hatred crossed Zhang Zihang’s eyes. "We both came from the same small town, so why should he get sponsored by the Luo Family so easily?
Why should he get the Luo Family’s young miss to like him so easily? I couldn’t accept it.
I just made an offhand comment. Who knew that idiot Luo Anan would actually make a move on Li Yiming?
That idiot Li Yiming... on the day it happened, he’d even gone out and bought a ring, planning to propose to Luo Anan.
Too bad for him, he had no idea that Luo Anan and I were already messing around."
Jiang Li glanced at Lu Xingye.
Lu Xingye pointed to the notebook on the table.
She took a look. "Besides Li Yiming, who else did you target?"
Zhang Zihang fell silent, his face contorting in agony. "My... my child with Luo Anan. I never expected her to get pregnant.
Later, after the fetus had developed, she was afraid it would affect her studies and that Li Yiming would find out. She had me help her remove the baby in the lab.
A six-month-old fetus. It was still alive when it came out.
It was Luo Anan who said... she wanted to see the difference between a six-month-old baby and a full-term one..."
Jiang Li’s hand trembled. ’I never thought Luo Anan could be so twisted.’ Her lapse in concentration broke the hypnosis, and Zhang Zihang snapped out of it.
"What did you do to me?" Zhang Zihang felt the tear tracks on his face and roared at Jiang Li, completely breaking down.
Jiang Li got up and walked out. As she left, her body swayed, and she had to lean against the wall to steady herself.
"Zhang Zihang, you bastard! They tell you to talk, and you just talk? Why don’t you just go die!"
In the next room, Luo Anan and Luo Mingsheng heard everything clearly. Luo Mingsheng was so angry he nearly blacked out.
"Luo Anan, what else do you have to say for yourself!"
Huo Qing stared at Luo Anan. ’To think someone in her twenties could be so malicious.’
"Captain Huo, we’ve found him!"
Half an hour later, an excited voice crackled over the walkie-talkie.
「An hour later.」
Two stretchers were carried in.
"Organ functions have failed. He can’t be saved." The accompanying medical examiner pulled off his gloves, shaking his head regretfully.
Jiang Li looked up and met Li Yiming’s eyes, which he struggled to open. Then, the corners of his mouth twitched a few times, and he was gone.
Jiang Li pressed her lips together tightly and turned to walk out.
After stepping outside, Jiang Li felt a gaze on her. She turned her head and met Guo Xue Mei’s eyes.
Guo Xue Mei walked over to her. "Are you a medical student too, Miss Jiang? Which university did you graduate from? I don’t believe I’ve heard of you before."
Jiang Li’s gaze was heavy. With her eyes half-lowered, she just stared at her quietly.
Guo Xue Mei’s heart tightened. ’Why is this girl suddenly looking at me like that?’
"Ms. Guo, isn’t the biggest reason for Luo Anan’s extremism... you?" Jiang Li raised her eyes, the grim aura around her dissipating slightly.
"Miss Jiang, for An’an to do something like this, I, as her mother, cannot escape the blame. If I had known she would become so extreme, I would never have let her study medicine in the first place."
Guo Xue Mei put on a pained expression.
Jiang Li scoffed, her voice soft with sarcasm. "So hypocritical."
’Just now, I was thinking, Luo Anan is only in her twenties. Pregnancy, childbirth, murder, experimentation... there’s no way her family was truly oblivious to such huge events.
How could Guo Xue Mei, living under the same roof, not know she was six months pregnant?
She’s a mother and an obstetrician who has delivered countless babies. How could she not have noticed?
She tacitly approved of all of it. Or perhaps, she had hit a bottleneck in her own profession and hoped her daughter could break through to a new level.
She probably never expected, just like Luo Anan, that a cat would ruin everything.
And Luo Mingsheng is also responsible. He hoped for his daughter to become a great success and indulged her actions. He just never expected that Luo Anan would start targeting human lives.’
"You’re about the same age as my An’an, aren’t you? You’re both still young and don’t understand the good intentions of parents. We were strict with her, but it was all for her own good.
We were just a bit negligent in her upbringing."
Guo Xue Mei said earnestly, her face a mask of profound grief.
Jiang Li didn’t say much more. She looked at her and said one sentence: "So you sent your only child to hell."
Guo Xue Mei’s expression froze. She stared at Jiang Li’s back, lost in thought.
Jiang Li sat on a stool, cradling a milk tea as she watched the busy police officers.
"Jiang Li, you’re amazing! Can you predict the future? If so, can you do me a favor?"
It took Wu Ming a long time to process the horrific case. Recalling how composed Jiang Li had been throughout the entire thing, she hurried over to find her.
Jiang Li smiled and shook her head. "I can’t predict the future. This is the talisman you asked me to bring. Can you take a look at it for me?"
Jiang Li took the talisman out of a red sock.
Wu Ming’s mouth twitched. ’It doesn’t stink, does it?’
"You said it was best to use red cloth, which I didn’t have. But it’s my birth-chart year, so I have a bunch of red socks.
This one’s new. Never been worn."
Only then did Wu Ming take the talisman from her and examine it closely.
"This thing... HISSS... it’s really sinister!"
Wu Ming rubbed her round chin, her little face scrunched up. She looked just like one of those fortune-tellers she had seen, all serious and methodical.
Jiang Li waited for Wu Ming to continue. Then, she saw Guo Xue Mei and Luo Mingsheng being led into the interrogation room.
