Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Refusing Ready-Made Credit, What a Complete Idiot
The phone on the nightstand was still ringing. She glanced at it—a call from Qiao Siyuan. A voice erupted from the other end the instant she picked up.
"Jiang Li, where did you go? Why aren’t you home?" Qiao Siyuan roared, unable to contain his anger.
He had finally worked up the nerve to go after Jiang Li, only to come back and find she wasn’t even home.
Before Qiao Siyuan could finish, Chen Xiufang, who was beside him, snatched the phone away.
"Jiang Li, where the hell did you go? Get your ass back here right now!"
Yesterday, when Chen Xiufang heard what Qiao Siyuan was planning, she hadn’t thought much of it. But when she returned today and opened the door, she thought she’d walked into the wrong apartment.
Besides the walls, not a single thing was intact. All her furniture, worth over a hundred thousand, was gone.
At the sight of this, any thought of scheming completely vanished from Chen Xiufang’s mind.
Jiang Li held the phone away from her ear. She glanced at the time—seven in the morning. She still had to make a trip to the police station.
"I’m busy."
After saying that, Jiang Li hung up, gathered her things, and went downstairs to catch a taxi to the police station.
"Hey, Jiang Li, it’s you! What a coincidence!" Wu Ming hurried over to greet her.
Jiang Li smiled and greeted her back. Looking up at the police station before her, she suddenly missed Ji Qinghe and the others.
’Changing locations is like having to break in all over again.’
Jiang Li sighed, mentally exhausted, and stepped inside.
Huo Qing looked at Lu Xingye, a headache brewing. "Lu Xingye, if you keep acting like a maniac, you can go right back where you came from!"
’This damn kid has to be crazy,’ he thought. ’Dragging me out of bed this early in the morning to find Jiang Li. I told him not to rush, but he acts like he can’t wait for her to magically appear right in front of him.’
"Brother Huo, please help me find out where Jiang Li is staying now," Lu Xingye said, pressing his hands together in a pleading gesture.
Speechless, Huo Qing smacked him on the head.
"OW!"
Lu Xingye clutched his head in pain.
"I told you, I’m looking into it! What’s the rush? You think she’s just going to fly right in front of you?"
Lu Xingye froze, his hands still on his head, and stared at something behind Huo Qing. "Holy crap, she actually did!"
Jiang Li was first surprised, then delighted, to see Lu Xingye here. "Lu Xingye."
Hearing the voice behind him, Huo Qing’s mouth twitched. ’It really is her...’
"Jiang Li, are you okay?" Lu Xingye shoved Huo Qing aside and walked toward her.
"I’m fine. Lu Xingye, what are you doing here?" Jiang Li looked at him with a smile. ’Things will be much easier with someone I know here!’
"I, AHEM, Sister Ji and Brother Zhou were worried about you, so they sent me on a business trip to see if you needed any help."
Lu Xingye looked at Jiang Li. She seemed fine. ’But didn’t she come here with Qiao Siyuan?’
"Actually, I do need help. I..."
Jiang Li glanced at Huo Qing, who was standing nearby.
"It’s fine, just say it. Brother Huo will be very cooperative, right, Brother Huo?" Lu Xingye said, nudging Huo Qing.
Huo Qing sat down to the side, speechless. ’Young people these days are so reckless.’
Jiang Li looked at Lu Xingye, her body relaxing noticeably. "I dreamed about a laboratory filled with animals. I was dismembering them and transplanting their limbs onto other animals.
There was a snake’s body with a rat’s head, a snake with four limbs transplanted onto it, and... a human head on a pig’s body, a pig’s head on a human’s body.
The crucial thing is, they were all still alive."
As Huo Qing listened to Jiang Li, his brow furrowed deeper and deeper. In all his years on the force, he had encountered many deviants, but he had never even dreamed of the things she was describing.
"I suspect the perpetrator is a woman, not very old, probably in the field of medical research.
I tried to transplant a rat’s heart into a cat, but it failed. I was furious. Maybe it was because their hearts are too small and can’t take the stress.
So, I decided to start using humans instead. After all, human hearts are much stronger than animal hearts, and they’re easier to operate on."
Huo Qing shot to his feet, his gaze sharp and cold as he stared at her.
He could sense the deranged mentality of a criminal coming from her.
"Brother Huo, calm down, calm down. You’ll get used to it after a few times," Lu Xingye said, trying to placate Huo Qing.
Huo Qing frowned at him. "You really believe this? Does Zhou Tiancheng believe it too?"
’This is too ridiculous,’ he thought. ’Dreaming of a crime scene? If that were possible, there wouldn’t be cold cases that have been unsolved for years.’
Jiang Li pressed her lips together. ’I knew it.’
"Brother Huo, you’d be right to believe her. The serial killer case, the crime syndicate bust, the wife-dismemberment murder, and the homicidal maniac we just caught two days ago—that was all thanks to Jiang Li.
If you don’t believe me, I’ll call Brother Zhou right now." As he spoke, Lu Xingye pulled out his phone. ’A ready-made contribution to a case is sitting right in front of him. If he doesn’t want the credit, we’ll take it!’
A flicker of delight showed in Jiang Li’s eyes. ’Perfect!’
Huo Qing looked at the beaming expressions on the two young people’s faces and raised a hand to stop Lu Xingye.
He looked at Jiang Li seriously. "Are there any other clues?"
’If what she’s saying is true,’ he thought, ’then the suspect’s next step is to abduct someone.’
"Not yet. Maybe next time I fall asleep."
Jiang Li looked at Huo Qing. He was completely different from Zhou Tiancheng. Huo Qing had a natural, deadly aura about him.
Huo Qing was at a loss for words. In the end, he simply turned around to delegate the investigation to his subordinates.
"Jiang Li, your ex-boyfriend... he didn’t do anything to you, did he?" Lu Xingye asked, looking at Jiang Li nervously.
"It’s fine. Things are great," Jiang Li said with a smile.
Lu Xingye didn’t believe her, but if she didn’t want to talk about it, he couldn’t exactly force her.
"Jiang Li! Jiang Li! Thank you so much for yesterday! Thanks to you, I’ve gone viral!"
Wu Ming sidled up to her with a grin, holding out her phone for her to see. "Overnight, I gained ten thousand followers! And I’ve got several new clients in my DMs asking me to help find their lost pets."
Lu Xingye eyed the charlatan in front of him. ’He’d only been away from Jiang Li for a day; how did she pick up another person?’
"Are you a fortune-teller?" Jiang Li asked her curiously.
"I know a little bit of this and that, but I’m not an expert in anything."
Wu Ming gave an embarrassed laugh. The truth was, she was just a dabbler. In all the time since she’d left her mountain home, this was the only time she’d ever gotten a prediction right.
"Can I see your client list?"
Jiang Li looked at her, thinking about the bizarre animals in the laboratory. ’There were tags in the trash can... They must have been pets.’
"Sure!" Wu Ming pulled up her DMs.
[Master Wu, my darling snake that I’ve had for five years is missing. Can you help me find him? Money is no object.]
[Master Wu, Master Wu, this is my precious kitty, please help!]
Jiang Li scrolled through the list and, based on the animals from her dream, picked out five owners.
"These five. Are they okay?"
Jiang Li asked, turning back to look at Wu Ming.
Wu Ming bit her lip, looked at her with pleading eyes, and pressed her hands together. "Can you come with me, then? Please, please, pretty please!"
She felt like Jiang Li was her lucky star!
"If you don’t think it’ll be a hassle, then sure."
"Hello, officer, I’m here to file a report. My girlfriend..."
Qiao Siyuan was halfway through his sentence when he suddenly saw Jiang Li, and the words caught in his throat.
’Why is Jiang Li at the police station again?’
’What is she planning?’
