Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Perverted Research

Listening to her, Jiang Li’s gaze fell on the kitten in her arms. Where the kitten’s tail should have been, there was a long, black rat’s tail!

The sight immediately reminded Jiang Li of the pig’s body with a human head from her dream. ’Could it be that it wasn’t a nightmare at all? Could it be real?’

At the thought, Jiang Li’s heart began to pound.

Wu Ming glanced at Jiang Li, then back at the cat in her hands. A closer look revealed that it wasn’t just a rat’s tail; there was also a grafted patch of rat skin.

If she hadn’t been mentally tough since she was a child, Wu Ming would have thrown the cat down right then and there.

Jiang Li took out her phone, about to call Ji Qinghe, when she suddenly remembered she wasn’t in C City anymore.

So, Jiang Li had to call the local police station instead.

Seeing this, Wu Ming quickly contacted her client.

Soon, the police arrived.

The officer in the lead frowned at the grotesque cat in their hands. "It’s just a cat, isn’t it?"

Jiang Li sensed his impatience and decided to stay quiet.

"What do you mean, ’just a cat’? A cat is a living creature! And what does this mean? It means there’s a psycho in your jurisdiction!

Today it’s a cat, but what if next time it’s a person!"

Wu Ming angrily confronted the officer. Just then, her client, Xia Zhiqi, hurried over. The moment she saw the kitten in Wu Ming’s arms, tears streamed down her face.

"SOB... My sweet baby!"

Xia Zhiqi looked at the kitten and sobbed uncontrollably. She had rescued this stray, and it was so sweet. She’d worked so hard to nurse it back to health, and now this had happened.

"Officer, you have to help us find out who did this! Who could be so cruel? I’m begging you!"

Xia Zhiqi gazed at the kitten in her arms. It let out two faint mews, then struggled to lift its head and look at her one last time before it died.

Xia Zhiqi’s sobs grew louder.

"Alright, Little Qi, I know you’re heartbroken, but what’s done is done. Let’s try not to dwell on it, okay? It was in so much pain while it was alive.

Let’s let it rest in peace."

Xia Zhiqi’s friend stepped forward to comfort her.

"An’an!" Xia Zhiqi threw herself into Luo Anan’s arms, wailing.

Luo Anan glanced at the dead kitten in her friend’s arms and quickly averted her eyes, unable to look.

"What’s going on here?"

"Captain Huo, it’s just a cat that was part of a prank. Nothing serious."

Huo Qing’s expression was grim. A scar ran from the corner of his eye across his rugged face.

Hearing that, Huo Qing stepped forward for a look. His expression immediately turned grave. ’A rat’s tail and skin grafted onto a cat, and it somehow survived for days.’

’If this were done to a person...’

"Nothing serious? You call this nothing serious? Ma Kun, I don’t care how you got on the force, but on my watch, pulling strings won’t get you anywhere!"

Intimidated by Huo Qing’s intensity, Ma Kun flinched. ’But it really is just a cat,’ he thought.

Xia Zhiqi looked at him as if he were her last hope, rushing forward to grab his arm. "Officer Huo, you have to catch this monster!"

"Don’t worry. But could you leave the cat’s body with us for an examination?"

Xia Zhiqi hesitated for a moment before nodding quickly. "Yes, of course. Thank you for your hard work."

Huo Qing called over colleagues from the relevant department to take the cat for forensic analysis.

Jiang Li watched the entire exchange quietly from the sidelines.

Just as Huo Qing was about to give instructions to his subordinates, he spotted Jiang Li in the corner.

Huo Qing stopped in his tracks and stared at her. Zhou Tiancheng had called, asking him to look after a woman and telling him some very strange things.

She looked just like the photo Zhou Tiancheng had sent.

"Are you Jiang Li?" Huo Qing asked her directly.

Snapped out of her thoughts, Jiang Li looked at him. "Yes, I’m Jiang Li."

Huo Qing nodded and stepped forward. "Hello. I’m Huo Qing, a friend of Zhou Tiancheng’s. He told me a bit about your situation today."

"Oh, hello!" Jiang Li’s mouth fell open in surprise. ’I can’t believe Officer Zhou is so thoughtful.’

Huo Qing looked at her dazed expression, completely different from how Zhou Tiancheng had described her.

Wu Ming also thought Jiang Li seemed a bit out of it, always spacing out when she wasn’t talking.

After leaving the police station, Jiang Li looked around and pulled out her phone to find a nearby hotel. She hadn’t brought her keys when she left.

Wu Ming came out and kept her eyes on Jiang Li, then walked up to her. "Hi, I’m Wu Ming. Thanks for your help today."

Jiang Li turned to the girl beside her. Up close, she could see the girl had a cute, slightly chubby face.

"It was nothing. I’m Jiang Li."

Seeing that she wasn’t much of a conversationalist, Wu Ming was suddenly at a loss for words.

"Well, um, I should get going. Maybe I’ll see you around."

"Okay." Jiang Li forced a smile and nodded.

Wu Ming left with a sigh.

Jiang Li watched her go, puzzled. ’Why does she look so disappointed?’

Jiang Li found a nearby hotel and checked in. After quickly washing up, she got into bed.

The moment she fell asleep, the dream returned. Before she even opened her eyes, she could hear a pig grunting.

She rubbed her eyes to get a better look, and any trace of sleepiness was instantly shocked out of her.

Below the pig’s head was a human body. The pig’s snout huffed, and it grunted as it tried to drag itself along.

Jiang Li stared in horror. Her vision shifted in the next instant, showing her rats and snakes, cat-dogs, dog-people...

The vast laboratory was filled with animals, none of them whole.

Jiang Li saw a pair of pale, slender hands reach into a case and pull out a small white mouse.

"Do you think a mouse’s heart could beat inside a cat? If this experiment is a success, won’t that make me a genius!

Then I can try putting a pig’s heart, a cow’s heart, any compatible heart, into a human.

BWAHAHAHA! When that happens, the Nobel Prize will be mine, won’t it?"

Hearing this, Jiang Li’s stomach churned.

Then she watched her own hands perform the surgery, removing a tiny heart and placing it inside the cat’s body.

As long as the monitor registered a beat, her experiment would be a success.

"Why isn’t it working! Damn it, beat! Why won’t you beat!"

She grabbed a scalpel from the table and hacked the test subject to pieces.

"It must have failed because the subject was too weak. It seems I’ll have to find a person instead, hehehe!"

The deranged, vicious laughter echoed in her ears. Jiang Li jolted awake and frantically rubbed her own cheeks, forcing down the smile that had formed on her lips.
