Chapter 169: Chapter 164: He Knew You Came Back, and Specially Rushed Over?
Georgia Thorne had no intention of going inside, so she turned and left.
The next morning, while Georgia was still asleep, her phone rang.
"What’s up?"
"Georgia, I didn’t say anything weird last night, did I?" Selena Sheridan asked carefully from the other end of the call.
"No. Did something happen?"
"Good, that’s a relief. Go back to sleep, I won’t bother you anymore!"
Selena Sheridan let out a couple of nervous laughs, then hung up.
Georgia glanced at the time. It was only five in the morning.
Ever since the two of them made up, they’d been just like they used to be, with a lot more to talk about.
But Georgia was incredibly busy with work. On top of that, with graduation approaching, she had to submit her thesis and design drafts for school. She barely had any free time.
Selena had gone abroad to travel and clear her head, so the two of them hadn’t been talking as much.
That afternoon, Georgia had just gotten back from finishing an assignment when Nicole Kane informed her they had to entertain clients that evening.
Georgia took a breath and agreed.
She’d been feeling drained lately, so she touched up her makeup before heading out.
The client they were meeting had a powerful background. Nicole Kane brought three people with her: Georgia and two male colleagues.
The client’s company was the Irving Group, one of the biggest firms in Portmire.
The man in charge on their end was Erin Irving, who was said to be the company’s young master.
"Hello, Manager Irving. I’m Nicole Kane, the one in charge of this project."
"Hello, Miss Kane."
Erin Irving let out a wicked smile as he sized up Nicole Kane. "Such a beautiful woman, Miss Kane. It’s a real shame."
His tone was flippant, and anyone could tell his words carried a hidden, and unpleasant, meaning.
Nicole Kane remained composed. With a light, lukewarm laugh, she retorted, "You’re joking, Manager Irving. You’re the real shame here."
Georgia had done some cramming on the client file before they came, so she knew a bit about this Erin Irving.
She’d heard he was a profligate son in his youth who got into trouble and was sent abroad.
He’d only returned six months ago and was just playing at being a manager in his family’s company.
He was the Irving Family’s only son. Who else would inherit the family fortune if not him?
He was destined for a life less ordinary. Even in a seemingly mundane position, plenty of people were there to kiss up to him.
"You’re an interesting one, Miss Kane."
"The feeling’s mutual," Nicole Kane replied, her smile not reaching her eyes.
"Entertaining clients," as it was called, was really just an excuse to drink.
Georgia could usually hold her liquor, but her stomach had been giving her trouble for the past six months, so she’d been drinking very little.
Coupled with Erin Irving deliberately making things difficult, it wasn’t long before Georgia started to feel a wave of nausea.
She couldn’t take it anymore, so she excused herself and went to the restroom.
She felt much better after throwing up and quickly cleaned herself up.
As she turned to leave, she saw Erin Irving on the phone.
"Whichever hand touched my things, chop it off. It’ll be an appetizer for Napoleon. As for the other one, just throw him in the river and feed him to the fish. His flesh isn’t even worthy of Napoleon."
Erin Irving stood by the door, discussing something bloody and horrific as if he were commenting on the weather, a casual smile on his face.
Georgia’s first reaction was, ’Whose hand? Chopped off and fed to Napoleon? What’s a Napoleon?’
’Everyone says Erin Irving is bad news... but he wouldn’t actually chop off someone’s hand, would he?!’
’Whatever it is, it’s best not to get involved.’
Georgia decided to pretend she hadn’t heard anything. She would just slip back quietly, as if she was never there and never overheard that conversation.
However, just as she hunched over to sneak away, a pair of shiny leather shoes appeared in her path.
Her gaze traveled up from the shoes to find Erin Irving’s handsome face looking down at her.
Aside from his impressive family background, Erin Irving was also blessed with exceptionally good looks.
He narrowed his eyes, his smile disarmingly charming. "Does Miss Thorne enjoy playing the cat burglar? Eavesdropping on other people’s calls?"
Georgia shook her head frantically. "I didn’t hear a thing!"
"Oh, really? And you think I’d believe you?"
Erin Irving’s smile grew even gentler, but to Georgia, it was a cold expression, utterly devoid of warmth and brimming with murderous intent.
She flinched, shaking her head. ’If she were in his shoes, she wouldn’t believe it either.’
"So, Miss Thorne, tell me... what should I do about this?" Erin Irving found Georgia’s fear rather amusing, and a spark of interest ignited within him.
He crossed his arms, watching her. "You know, no one has ever eavesdropped on my calls before."
Panic seized Georgia as her mind flashed back to the stories of his troubled youth.
’Rich wastrels like him never played by the rules.’
"Uh, Mr. Irving, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop," Georgia said, looking up at him with wide, innocent eyes, trying to make him believe her. "I was just coming out of the restroom. I didn’t realize you were on the phone out here. I’m really sorry."
’He isn’t going to chop off the ear that heard him and feed it to that... that Napoleon, is he?!’
"Georgia Thorne! What are you doing over there? Get over here, now!"
Just as Georgia was trying to figure out how to escape the situation, a voice came to her rescue.
She looked toward the source of the voice and saw a man with a dark expression standing at the other end of the corridor.
He was striding toward them. Georgia blinked, staring at the man she hadn’t seen in so long.
’How frustrating. Ever since coming back, she’d run into everyone she was trying to avoid.’
Erin Irving grinned at the newcomer. "President Lennox. Fancy meeting you here. What a coincidence!"
Zane Lennox’s expression was grim as he pulled Georgia behind him. "I’m sorry. If my friend has offended you in any way, I apologize on her behalf."
Zane Lennox grabbed Georgia’s wrist, his grip tight as a silent warning for her to stay quiet.
"Apologize? President Lennox, what are you talking about? Miss Thorne and I are friends, you know!" Erin Irving said with a smile. His eyes flickered over Zane Lennox before landing back on Georgia’s face. "Miss Thorne, weren’t we just in the middle of discussing Napoleon?"
