Chapter 128: Chapter 128: The Second Potion
The cafeteria. At first, Faye Yardley had thought she’d entered another school. It was only after she fought her way through it that she realized she was in a large factory.
The zombie virus had broken out during work hours. Looking at the dense horde of zombies, she couldn’t help but wonder. ’How could a single factory have employed so many people?!’
Without a second thought, Faye Yardley tossed a bomb straight into the densest part of the horde.
BOOM—
BOOM! BOOM!
Explosions rang out one after another, accompanied by the furious roars of the zombies. Faye felt like her eardrums were about to burst.
She couldn’t afford to stand still, either. A living person was extremely conspicuous in the middle of a zombie horde. The target of every zombie nearby instantly locked onto her.
Zombies had a herd mentality, so more and more of them started rushing toward her.
They charged with such ferocious speed that Faye didn’t even have a chance to use a gun. She just raised her blade to block and slash.
’Kill, kill, kill!’
The zombies weren’t the only ones in a frenzy. Faye’s eyes were bloodshot as she charged headfirst into the undead tide, unleashing a storm of slaughter that blotted out the sun and moon.
She had to admit, after her Constitution broke the 20-point mark, her combat endurance had significantly increased.
Faye felt that in the heat of battle, she was truly experiencing the zombies’ kind of joy—the joy of knowing only combat, not fatigue.
She watched as the zombies before her fell one by one, only to be replaced by new waves pouncing forward.
As time wore on, Faye fought with growing fervor, becoming almost like a zombie herself—unthinking, unfeeling, driven by nothing but the instinct to kill.
Even in the midst of combat, her body’s breathing rhythm slowly adjusted to the pattern of the Health Care Scripture. It seemed her energy regeneration was outpacing her consumption.
This gave her the stamina for sustained slaughter.
She fought from morning until night, killing every last zombie in sight.
Once she was the only one left standing, her tension finally broke, and a profound exhaustion washed over her.
Faye shook her head and glanced up. A grappling hook and a coil of rope appeared in her hand.
With a powerful swing, the hook caught firmly on a second-floor windowsill. After a firm tug, Faye climbed the rope up to the second floor. She followed the hallway to its end, where she found a small office. Pushing the door open, she was surprised to find it immaculately clean and tidy.
The sight made Faye, who had been exhausted and looking for a place to rest, instantly go on high alert. She immediately downed an Energy Potion and a Physical Potion, restoring herself to peak condition in an instant.
The moment she stepped into the office, the door shut automatically behind her.
CLAP. CLAP. CLAP.
The sound of applause echoed from out of nowhere.
"Hello there, my friend."
Faye couldn’t see a soul, yet the voice was crystal clear, as if its owner was standing just a short distance in front of her.
Her nerves, which had just relaxed, instantly grew even tauter than before.
"Who are you?"
"Don’t be nervous. Relax. I’m not actually in this office. If you don’t believe me, turn on the computer’s projector. You’ll see that I’m telling the truth."
Faye was reluctant to comply, but she knew that to achieve a perfect clear of the Dungeon, she had to eliminate all the zombies.
After confirming she didn’t sense any immediate danger, Faye cautiously moved to the computer and pressed a button. A moment later, behind the desk just in front of her, a projection of a middle-aged man appeared. He had an air of seasoned maturity, wore a white lab coat, and had on a pair of rimless glasses. He looked completely out of place in a factory.
"No need to be nervous, young friend. I can’t cause you any physical harm. Oh, right, let me introduce myself. I am Yvonne’s uncle, Bowen Lynch. You can call me Mr. Lynch."
"Mr. Lynch?"
"Yes. I have a test-phase potion I stored here a long time ago. Since we can no longer return, I can give it to you to take with you."
’A potion?’
Faye was suddenly reminded of the virus vaccine sample she had acquired earlier. ’Could they be related?’
Since he didn’t seem to bear her any ill will, Faye asked directly, "What is this potion for? And the virus vaccine sample—does it prevent infection from the zombie virus?"
"It seems you’ve made some other discoveries. Have you been to my brother’s laboratory?"
"Yes."
"Open the safe behind me. The password is..."
Faye did as he instructed and found cold air misting out of the safe. Inside, a light-green serum rested quietly in a glass box.
The color alone was different from the one she’d found before.
"Very good. That’s a potion that can grant a person a superpower. What kind of superpower you get depends on the individual. Of course, if you have... greater ambitions, I wouldn’t recommend you use it."
Bowen Lynch paused for a moment before continuing. "As for the sample you obtained from my brother’s lab, I haven’t seen it, but it’s most likely a vaccine that grants immunity to zombification."
"Thank you."
Bowen Lynch smiled. "As for the rest... you’re on your own. Good luck. This factory holds more than just workers. Well then, goodbye."
With that, the projection flickered twice and vanished without a sound.
Faye stood frozen for a long moment before approaching the spot where Bowen Lynch had been. She reached out her hand and felt nothing but empty air.
’He’s really gone?’
’Did he show up just to give me something?’
’Or was there some mechanism at play that I missed?’
Looking at the glass box in her hand, Faye figured that since he’d been so generous, there was no need for her to be modest. She put it directly into her pack.
She walked over, turned off the computer, and sank into the chair. The moment her Spirit relaxed, even though her energy stat was full, she felt an overwhelming weariness.
Before long, she was slumped over the desk, fast asleep.
After she fell asleep, the office lights flickered a few times and then went out completely. The last rays of the setting sun vanished, plunging the entire factory into darkness.
Huge, dark figures began to crawl up from the factory’s lower levels. Seeing the ground littered with zombie corpses, they pounced as if they’d found a delectable feast.
The sounds of crunching and chewing soon filled the air. free𝑤ebnovel.com
When a smaller figure climbed up and appeared, all the chewing sounds stopped. The noise only resumed after it gave a nod.
It raised its head, scanning its surroundings and sniffing the air. It then suspiciously circled the open courtyard in the center of the factory building twice.
It abruptly lifted its head toward the southeast corner and sniffed intently. Then, with a couple of light leaps, it jumped directly onto a windowsill with shattered glass.
It landed gracefully on the second-floor walkway and finally stopped in front of one of the office doors. It paced back and forth, seeming to want to break the door down several times. But each time, it appeared to recall some warning. It whimpered twice at the door before finally choosing to lie down quietly, waiting patiently.
Inside the room, Faye was sleeping so soundly that even her own warnings not to let her guard down were useless.
The more exhilarating the slaughter had been, the deeper her exhaustion was now.
CRUNCH CRUNCH...
SLURP SLURP...
Faye knew she was asleep, but it was a fitful, exhausting rest. She couldn’t wake up, and the sounds of biting, chewing, and swallowing were drowning her...
