Chapter 16: Clear The Block

The gates were opened, and the four teams silently moved out into the city, doing their best not to attract the attention of anything before they were ready to fight.

A feat that would prove impossible.

The sound of the earlier battle had drawn many other monsters to the area, and when they couldn’t see the fight because of the Academy walls, they had lingered. frёewebnoѵēl.com

"Warriors forward. Use your Shield Slam to stop the charge while we get set to shoot," Kalli heard one of the other soldiers shouting.

Sergeant Sanchez motioned for Reggie and Derek to move forward, attracting the attention of a massive creature that looked like a long-legged crocodile. It wasn’t the most horrifying thing that they had seen, but it was close. Plus, it was far larger than they were.

Sanchez and Yara both fired as the creature charged, their bullets hitting opposite eyes, and suddenly the creature was blind.

But it could still hear them.

"Dammit, why can’t we fight things that die when you shoot them in the head?" Reggie complained as he charged into the creature using [Shield Slam].

That brought the monster to a standstill, but it snapped at him, nearly grasping his shield in its jaws.

Derek waved his blade in an underhanded swing, sending a wave of energy up into the creature’s neck.

A deep cut poured deep red blood onto the ground, and the two warriors backed away, letting the creature flail in confusion. Then, it seemed to lock onto someone, and began to charge at Yara.

The healer rolled to the side as the warriors scrambled to stop the monster.

The charge sent the creature past Kalli, and she slammed her club down on top of its head with all her might. Not as much as a Warrior could do, but hard enough that the creature’s head was knocked away from Yara, and the two warriors managed to get solid attacks in on its sides, leaving it bleeding heavily as Sanchez put another bullet into its head.

The creature was getting sluggish as its claws raked at Derek’s shield. But even after another round of attacks, it was still fighting.

"Just die already." Sanchez complained as he leapt forward, driving the short sword he had borrowed from Kalli into the creature’s skull.

{Crocolisk Killed} Experience awarded

Their battle had attracted more of the rat demons, the impish little humanoid rat men. They didn’t hesitate to attack when they saw humans, and the group was immediately back in close combat.

Kalli moved to defend Yara, who had her hands full, casting barriers on the warriors.

Against the smaller demons, Kalli’s bat was more than effective enough. However, her stomach turned as the sound of shattering bone reminded her that it would be coming from her if not for the weapon drop.

Brutal swings of the bat sent rat demons flying, and the warriors moved to surround them.

Reggie and Derek had their swords out, while Sanchez and his special forces team were all using their rifles. Even though they weren’t considered heroes, with the bonus of the system, the other soldiers still killed with every shot, conserving ammunition as Sanchez had ordered.

They were still within sight of the Academy, not even a block away. But the demons were too small and too fast for the guards on the wall to risk shooting at them. The risk of hitting a student or comrade was too high.

A modern master planned urban design did not take a siege by monsters from another world into account when it designed the layout of buildings or streets.

The other teams hadn’t run into anything as bad as that Crocolisk yet, just more of the rat demons and one large demon hound. However, the Hard Mode quest cost Kalli ten times as much as an Easy quest, and she fully expected it to be ten times as challenging to complete. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Her bat connected with the skull of a rat demon, sending it rolling away, and Kalli’s sight flashed with a notification

{Loot Awarded}

She didn’t have time to see what it was, but she had definitely received something from killing that demon.

The pack was cleared, and Sanchez motioned for all of them to move into the shelter of the entryway of a ransacked shop.

"Catch your breath, hydrate, and we will move again in two minutes."

That gave Kalli a moment, and she quickly checked to see what she received. It was sitting in her [Storage Realm], a pair of tattered leather pants.

[Demon Leather Pants] formerly property of a rat demon. Common Grade armour.

Well, it was better than nothing, but she wouldn’t try to put those on until they were at least washed. Just the thought of putting on a rat demon’s pants was enough to make her shudder in revulsion.

She pulled a bottle of water from her backpack and sipped at it before putting it away. Too much water probably wasn’t a good idea either.

The team moved again right on the two-minute mark, and moved to the back of the building, where something could be heard moving.

The sound was more of those giant boars, three in total.

"This isn’t going to be an easy fight. We don’t have enough warriors to hold them all off as we fight. We should go to the roof and shoot at them. Take at least one out before they get close," Sanchez instructed.

The buildings had fire escape ladders that led to the roof, but they were all on the back of the building, closest to the boars. Kalli wasn’t sure that they could even make it to them without attracting the boars.

Cinder block commercial buildings would not hold up to attacks from a boar monster the size of a bull.

Sure enough, the moment that the first ladder creaked as a soldier touched it, the boars’ attention was grabbed.

"Warriors, full assault. Deal as much damage as you can. Aim for the head and neck."

The centre boar took a flurry of attacks from Reggie and Derek, and then its head reared back in pain, and a bullet from Sanchez went through its eye and into the skull for an instant kill.

"One down, two to go. Focus fire left."

The team members fired tight bursts into the boar, and dozens of bullet holes riddled the front of its body, causing it to stumble, and then fall when the [Cleave] attacks from the warriors hit it.

That left just one, and that was manageable.

However, that was not how things were going for everyone. Buoyed by the confidence of an early first fight, they had advanced too far, and now they were surrounded by boars and rat demons, fighting for their lives in a moving retreat toward the Academy walls.

If they could make it that far, they would have support.
